Chapter 2

The video disappeared from the front page after three days. But the comments stayed. They followed me to the bodega where I bought groceries. To the laundromat. To the subway platform.

A woman in line at the checkout counter saw me reaching for milk and pulled her cart back like I might contaminate it. She didn't say anything. She didn't have to. The look said everything.

I paid for my groceries and left.

Athena's face was everywhere that week. Magazine covers at the newsstand. A charity gala on Page Six. She wore white to everything — a different dress each time, but always white. In one photo, Keith's hand rested on the small of her back. In another, she was laughing at something he'd said, her head tipped toward his shoulder.

The captions called it a fairy tale.

My phone buzzed one afternoon while I was folding laundry. A text from an unknown number. I opened it.

A photograph. Keith kissing Athena's cheek at some benefit. Her eyes were closed. She looked radiant. The caption underneath was just a smiley face.

I stared at it for a long time. Then I deleted it. Put the phone face-down on the counter. Went back to folding towels.

Later, I sat on the kitchen floor. I pressed my palms together in my lap the way I always did when my hands started shaking. I counted my breaths. In for four. Out for six. I stayed there until the shaking stopped.

I didn't cry. I was past that now.

Keith came to the apartment three weeks after the nightclub. It was late. Almost midnight. I heard his key in the lock and sat up in bed, pulling the blanket around my shoulders.

He stood in the bedroom doorway. He looked tired. His tie was loose. His shirt wrinkled.

"I'm sorry," he said.

I didn't answer.

He crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. His hand found mine in the dark. "I know it's been hard. I know I haven't been here. But it's almost over, Elisa. Just a little longer."

His thumb traced circles on my wrist. The gesture was so familiar it hurt.

"I miss you," he said quietly.

Something in my chest cracked open. I'd been so cold for so long. And here he was. Warm. Real. The boy from the foster home. The man I'd married.

He kissed me. Gentle at first. Then deeper.

I let him. I wanted to believe this was real. That the warmth meant something. That the weeks of silence had just been strategy, not indifference.

He pulled me closer. His hands moved over me with a kind of urgency I didn't understand. I tried to slow him down. To ask what was happening. But he wasn't listening.

"Keith—"

"It's okay," he whispered against my neck. "I've got you."

But it wasn't okay. His grip was too tight. His weight was too heavy. I pushed at his chest and he caught my wrists, pinned them gently but firmly above my head.

"Stop fighting me," he said. Not angry. Almost tender. Like he was soothing a child.

I went still. Not because I wanted to. Because some part of me understood that fighting would make it worse.

Afterward, he lay beside me in the dark, one arm thrown across my waist. His breathing slowed. Deepened.

I stared at the ceiling. Counted the cracks. Tried to make sense of what had just happened.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand. Once. Twice. He stirred, reached for it, then got up and walked into the living room. I heard the door close softly behind him.

The walls in this apartment were thin. I'd always known that. I could hear the neighbor's television through the bedroom wall. Could hear footsteps in the hall.

I could hear Keith's voice now. Low. Controlled.

"...it's handled," he was saying. "If she's pregnant, she won't go anywhere. It's a contingency."

I stopped breathing.

"I know the timeline's tight," Keith continued. "But this buys us insurance. She's not going to leave if there's a child involved."

A pause. Then: "Yes, sir. I understand."

I lay perfectly still. My hands were folded on my stomach. I could feel my pulse in my throat.

Keith came back into the bedroom a few minutes later. He slid under the covers, pulled me against his chest, kissed the top of my head.

"Go to sleep," he murmured.

I closed my eyes. I didn't sleep.

I lay there in the dark, listening to Keith's breathing even out beside me, and understood with perfect clarity what had just happened.

He hadn't come here because he missed me. He'd come here because Hezekiah had told him to. Because a pregnancy was a useful tool. Because my body was a problem that needed solving.

I thought about the boy who'd shared a blanket with me when we had nothing. Who'd fought other kids who tried to hurt me. Who'd held my hand in the dark and promised we'd always have each other.

That boy was gone. Maybe he'd been gone for years. Maybe I'd just been too loyal to notice.

I didn't cry. I didn't move. I lay there with Keith's arm around me and felt the last thread of my love pull tight, then snap.

It didn't make a sound.
