Chapter 2

The peonies arrived at ten-fifteen on a Tuesday. White ones. The expensive kind that came wrapped in that thick gray paper from the shop on Madison that only took orders if you had an account.

My assistant stood in the doorway holding them like a bomb.

"These just came for you," she said. "Should I—"

"Return them."

"I'm sorry?"

I didn't look up from my laptop. "Return them to sender. Unopened. Include a note citing firm policy on personal gifts between joint-venture parties."

She blinked. "There's a card."

"I don't need to see it."

She left. The door clicked shut. I kept typing. My hands were perfectly steady. That was the part I was proud of. Five years ago those flowers would have made me cry. Two years ago they would have made me angry. Today they were just expensive trash that needed disposal.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist. Once. Let it go.

Finley called at lunch. I ate a salad at my desk and put him on speaker while he told me about a case that was giving him trouble. Some art fraud thing with a forged provenance. He didn't ask about my morning. He never asked unless I wanted to tell him. I loved that about him. I loved a lot of things about him.

"I'm flying back Friday," he said. "I'll make dinner."

"You don't have to."

"I want to." A pause. "The kind with the mushrooms you pretend not to like but always finish."

I smiled at my computer screen. "I do like them."

"I know."

After we hung up, I sat there for a minute in the quiet. The office had good light. Floor-to-ceiling windows facing south. I could see the whole grid of midtown from here. Somewhere down there, Collin was staring at a bouquet of returned peonies and telling himself a story about what it meant.

I went back to work.

The email came Thursday afternoon. Subject line: Hamilton Capital Q3 Strategy Retreat.

I read it twice. A week-long executive session at the Hamilton estate in Connecticut. Key stakeholders from both firms. My attendance was listed as "expected."

I forwarded it to my deputy with a three-line briefing memo and a note that she would be representing our team. Then I drafted a polite written regret citing scheduling conflicts and sent it to Collin's EA. I did not copy him directly. That would have acknowledged that I knew what he was doing.

I closed my laptop at six and took a car to the hotel. I had a room at the Park Hyatt until I found an apartment. It was clean and anonymous and no one knew me there. I ordered room service and called Finley and fell asleep with my phone on the pillow, his voice still in my ear saying something about the rain in London.

***

The reception was Friday night. Hamilton Capital's Q3 internal celebration. Technically a professional event. Technically I could not reasonably decline without signaling something I did not want to signal.

I wore black. Simple sheath dress, no jewelry except small diamond studs. I did my hair in a low twist. I looked like every other senior executive in the room. That was the point.

Collin found me by the window.

Of course he did.

He had a glass of champagne in one hand. His suit was navy tonight. Tie bar I didn't recognize. He stopped just close enough that I could smell the cologne and not close enough that anyone watching would think twice.

"Hope."

"Mr. Hamilton."

His mouth did something that wasn't quite a smile. "We're at a party."

"A work event."

"You used to like these."

I looked at him. Really looked. The same face. The same sharp line of his jaw. The same eyes that used to make me forget how to say no.

"I used to like a lot of things," I said.

He took a sip of champagne. Buying time. I knew that move too.

"The man at the gala last month," he said. Casual. Like he was asking about the weather. "The one you came with."

There it was.

I set my glass down on the windowsill. I made sure my face was calm and empty and done.

"His name is Finley," I said. "He is very important to me."

Collin's hand tightened on his glass. I watched his knuckles go white.

"Is there anything else regarding the Q3 projections?" I asked.

I didn't wait for an answer. I turned and walked across the room to where the senior partner from Goldman was standing with two analysts. I smiled. I made small talk. I laughed at something someone said about the Fed.

I did not look back.

But I felt it. The weight of his eyes. The way he stood there by the window, frozen, his hand clenched so tight the cufflinks bit into his wrist.

I stayed another forty minutes. Professional. Appropriate. Then I collected my coat and left.

In the car, my phone buzzed. Finley.

*Landed. Home in twenty. Leave the door unlocked.*

I smiled at the screen. I typed back: *Already done.*

Manhattan slid past the window in streaks of gold and white. Somewhere behind me, Collin Hamilton was standing in a room full of people, holding a glass he wasn't drinking, trying to solve an equation that had no answer.

I leaned my head against the cool glass and closed my eyes.

I was so tired of being his unfinished business.
