Chapter 3

The gala was at the Metropolitan Museum. Egyptian wing. Someone had hung a thousand tiny lights from the vaulted ceiling so the whole room looked like it was underwater.

I wore midnight blue. Finley met me at the hotel in a tuxedo that fit him the way good things fit good men—like it knew exactly what it was doing there. He offered his arm at the entrance. I took it. His sleeve was warm under my palm.

"You look terrified," he said quietly.

"I'm not."

"Liar."

I smiled despite myself. "Fine. A little."

"He's just a man, Hope." Finley's voice was low and steady. "A man who made bad choices. That's all he is."

I wanted to believe that. I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Finley's hand covered mine briefly. Then we walked in.

The room was full of people I used to know. Hamilton Capital executives. Board members. Donors with old money and new teeth. I saw heads turn. Saw the whispers start like ripples.

Collin was near the bar. Navy tuxedo. Champagne in hand. Berkley beside him in something pale pink and backless, her hand resting on his forearm like she owned it.

He saw me. I watched his whole body go still.

Then his eyes moved to Finley. To my hand on Finley's arm. To the way Finley leaned down to hear something I said and smiled.

Something crossed Collin's face. Something I didn't have a name for. It looked almost like pain.

Berkley saw it too. I watched her follow his gaze. Watched her face stay perfectly composed while her fingers tightened on his sleeve.

"Shall we?" Finley said.

We moved through the room. I made polite conversation with the Goldman partner. Laughed at something the CFO's wife said about the sculpture exhibit. Finley stayed close but not possessive. He had a way of being present without crowding. I loved that about him. I loved a lot of things about him.

I didn't look at Collin. But I felt it. The weight of his attention like heat on my back.

Dinner was at eight. They seated us at different tables. Finley was beside me. Collin was three tables over with Berkley pressed close to his side, whispering things that made him nod without smiling.

The speeches started during dessert. Someone from the museum. Someone from Hamilton Capital. I stopped listening. Finley's hand found mine under the table. I laced our fingers together and held on.

"You're doing beautifully," he said against my ear.

I turned my head. His face was very close. "I want to leave."

"Then we'll leave."

"After the auction."

"After the auction," he agreed.

The lights dimmed for the charity portion. A spotlight hit the stage. I glanced up at the rigging—all those lights hanging from the vaulted ceiling on metal bars and cables.

I didn't see it start to fall.

I heard it. A groan of metal. A snap like a gunshot.

Then the world came down.

I threw my arms over my head. Something heavy slammed into my shoulder and drove me sideways out of my chair. Pain exploded white behind my eyes. I hit the floor hard. My head cracked against the leg of the table. Something warm ran down my temple.

I couldn't breathe. There was weight on top of me. Metal. I tried to push it off and my shoulder screamed.

I heard shouting. Screaming. Someone yelling to call 911.

I turned my head. Through the forest of chair legs and broken rigging, I saw Collin.

He was running. Not toward me.

Toward Berkley.

She was standing near the edge of the collapse zone, one hand pressed to her mouth, her eyes wide and perfect. Collin reached her in four strides. He pulled her against his chest. Lifted her. Carried her away from the debris like she was the only person in the room who mattered.

I watched him go. I watched his back disappear into the crowd. I watched him not look back.

Something in my chest cracked. Not my ribs. Something deeper.

"Hope." Finley's voice. Close. Steady. "I've got you. Don't move."

His hands were on the metal bar pinning my shoulder. He lifted it like it weighed nothing. Then his jacket was pressed against my temple and his arm was around my back and he was lifting me up, so careful, so gentle.

"Ambulance is coming," he said. "You're all right. I have you."

I looked at his face. He wasn't panicking. He wasn't performing. He was just there. Completely there.

Across the room, through the chaos, I saw Collin standing with Berkley still pressed against him. He was looking at me now. Finally looking.

Our eyes met.

I watched him see it. See Finley holding me. See the blood on my face. See what he had chosen.

I watched something break behind his eyes.

Then Finley turned me away, and I let him. I pressed my face against his shoulder and closed my eyes and let him carry me out into the night where the ambulance lights were turning everything red and blue.

Behind us, the gala continued. Someone was making an announcement about remaining calm. The orchestra started playing again.

I didn't hear any of it. I only heard Finley's voice, low and steady against my hair.

"I've got you. You're safe. I've got you."

And for the first time in five years, I believed it.
