Chapter 3

The hospital smelled like bleach and fear. I stood in the hallway outside the emergency room, under fluorescent lights that made everyone look half-dead, and waited for my husband to finish lying to me.

Cassian was inside with her. Through the small window in the door, I could see him leaning over the bed, his hand on Dulce's shoulder. She was wearing a hospital gown, her dark hair spread across the pillow like she'd arranged it that way. She looked small and scared and exactly like someone who needed saving.

I turned away from the window.

A nurse walked past me carrying a clipboard. She didn't look at me. Nobody looked at me. I was just another woman standing in a hallway, waiting for news that would change her life. The hospital was full of us.

Two years ago, I stood in a hallway exactly like this one. Same lights. Same smell. Same feeling of the floor tilting under my feet. The doctor had come out and said words I couldn't hear over the ringing in my ears. Cassian had been beside me then, his hand on my back, but I don't remember him saying anything. I don't remember him holding me. I just remember the fluorescent lights and the way my legs wouldn't hold me up anymore.

The door opened. Cassian stepped out, closing it carefully behind him. His face was pale, his tie loosened. He looked like a man who'd been running.

"She's stable," he said. "The baby's okay. They're keeping her overnight for observation."

I nodded. I didn't trust my voice yet.

He moved closer, lowering his voice like we were in a boardroom and he was about to deliver difficult numbers. "Annabelle. We need to talk about this. About—about our situation."

"Your situation," I said quietly.

He blinked. "What?"

"You said 'our situation.' But it's yours. You made it. I'm just standing in it."

His jaw tightened. He glanced back at the door, then at me. "I didn't plan this. You have to believe that. I never wanted—"

"Is the baby yours?"

The question hung between us like smoke. He didn't answer right away. His hand went to his cufflink, turning it once, twice. Finally, he nodded.

"Yes."

One word. That's all it took.

I felt something inside me go very still and very cold. Not breaking. Clarifying. "How long?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

He exhaled through his nose, that boardroom patience slipping back into place. "Eight months. Maybe nine. I don't—it wasn't supposed to be like this. It just happened."

"Things don't just happen, Cassian. People make choices. You made a choice every single day for nine months."

"I know." His voice cracked, just slightly. "I know. And I'm sorry. But she's pregnant now, and I have to—I have responsibilities."

Responsibilities. The word tasted like metal in my mouth.

"What about your responsibilities to me?"

He looked at me then, really looked at me, and I saw something in his face I'd never seen before. Not guilt. Not shame. Just exhaustion. Like I was a problem he'd been trying to solve for a long time and had finally given up on.

"I tried, Annabelle. After—after you lost the baby, I tried. But you were so far away. You wouldn't talk about it. You just kept posting and smiling and pretending everything was fine."

"So you found someone who wasn't grieving."

He flinched. "That's not fair."

"None of this is fair."

A doctor walked past us, her shoes squeaking on the linoleum. Cassian waited until she was gone before he spoke again.

"I need to know what you're going to do."

"About what?"

"About us. About—" He gestured vaguely toward the door. "About all of this."

I looked at him standing there in his expensive suit, his hair perfectly combed, his cufflinks catching the fluorescent light. He looked like a man who had everything under control. He looked like a stranger.

"I'm going home," I said.

He nodded, relieved. "Okay. Good. We can talk tomorrow. Figure out next steps."

"No. I'm going home. You can stay here with your responsibilities."

I turned and walked down the hallway. He didn't follow me. I heard him say my name once, but I didn't stop. I kept walking until I reached the elevator, until the doors closed, until I was alone in the small metal box dropping toward the ground floor.

I didn't cry.

The brownstone was dark when I got home. I didn't turn on the lights. I walked upstairs to the guest room—my room now—and opened the wardrobe. At the back, behind the winter coats I hadn't worn in years, was the cedar-lined box.

I pulled it out and sat on the floor with it in my lap.

Inside was the baby blanket. Pale yellow, soft as a whisper. I'd knitted it during those four months when I thought I was going to be a mother. I'd worked on it every night, counting stitches, imagining tiny fingers wrapped in the yarn. After the accident, after the hospital, I'd folded it carefully and put it in this box and pushed it to the back of the wardrobe where I wouldn't have to see it.

I held it now. The yarn was still soft. The stitches were still even. It looked exactly like it had two years ago, like no time had passed at all.

I sat there for a long time, holding the blanket, feeling the weight of everything I'd lost and everything I'd tried to pretend I hadn't.

Then I folded it back up. I placed it in the box. I closed the lid and pushed the box back into the wardrobe, behind the coats, where it belonged.

I stood up. My legs were steady. My hands were steady.

I picked up my phone and opened a new browser tab.
