Chapter 4

The news broke on a Tuesday.

I was sitting in Sasha's Paris apartment, halfway through my second coffee, when my phone started buzzing with screenshots. Cassian's firm had issued a statement. *Voluntary leave of absence.* *Personal matters requiring his full attention.* The corporate language was careful, bloodless. The internet's translation was not.

By noon, his LinkedIn had been updated. By evening, someone had leaked an internal memo suggesting the leave wasn't quite as voluntary as the press release claimed. Marcus Webb's name appeared in the comments—*managing partner personally requested his departure.* I didn't feel satisfied. I felt nothing.

"Good," Sasha said, reading over my shoulder. "Let him sit with it."

I set my phone down and stared out the window at the narrow Parisian street below. The world looked smaller from here. Quieter.

Then the photos started.

Dulce at the Brooklyn café where I used to film. Dulce at the Italian restaurant Cassian and I went to for anniversaries. Dulce wearing a camel coat that looked exactly like one I'd posted about last fall. She wasn't hiding. She was replacing me, piece by piece, in all the places my followers knew by heart.

The comments under each sighting were vicious. My followers—*our* followers now—tracked her movements like a hunt. Someone created a map. Someone else made a countdown clock to her due date. I should have felt vindicated. Instead I felt tired.

"She's performing," Sasha said, scrolling through the latest post. "She wants you to see this."

"I know."

"So ignore it."

But I couldn't. Because three days later, Dulce sent me a message.

*Annabelle, I know this is complicated. But I think we should talk. Just the two of us. No lawyers, no audience. I want to understand each other. There's a café on Lexington—neutral ground. Please.*

I read it twice. Sasha read it over my shoulder and said a word I won't repeat.

"Don't go."

"I have to."

"Why?"

I looked at her. "Because I need to see her face. I need to understand exactly what I'm dealing with."

Sasha's jaw tightened. Then she handed me my phone back. "Record everything. From the second you walk in. I mean it, Bella. Everything."

I flew back to New York the next morning.

The café was small, bright, aggressively neutral. Exposed brick. Potted plants. The kind of place that appeared in lifestyle blogs with captions about self-care. I arrived ten minutes early and sat facing the door. I opened my phone's voice memo app and hit record. Then I set it on the table, screen down, like I'd just put it aside.

Dulce arrived exactly on time.

She looked smaller in person than she did in the elevator lobby. Softer. She wore a loose sweater that draped over her belly, minimal makeup, her hair pulled into a low ponytail. She looked like someone who was trying very hard to appear harmless.

"Thank you for coming," she said, sliding into the chair across from me. Her voice was quiet, careful. "I know this can't be easy."

I didn't say anything.

She folded her hands on the table. "I want you to know I never intended for any of this to happen. It just—it got complicated. And I think we both deserve to move forward without all this noise."

"Noise," I repeated.

"The internet. The comments. People who don't know us making judgments." She looked down at her hands. "I just want peace. For everyone."

I watched her. She was good. Every word, every gesture, every pause—it was all rehearsed. She'd practiced this in a mirror.

"What do you want from me, Dulce?"

She looked up, her eyes wide and sincere. "I want us to be civil. For the baby's sake. Cassian's going to be part of both our lives now, and I think—"

"He's not part of my life anymore."

Something flickered across her face. Not surprise. Calculation. She reached into her bag slowly, deliberately, and pulled something out.

The baby blanket.

Pale yellow. Soft as a whisper. The one I'd knitted two years ago and locked away in a cedar box at the back of my wardrobe.

She laid it on the table between us.

My chest went very cold.

"I found this," she said gently. "Cassian had it. I think—I think maybe you'd want it back. But—" She lifted it carefully, cradling it over her belly, smoothing the yarn with her fingers. "I hope you don't mind if I keep it. I think my baby will be warm in this."

She smiled. Small. Composed.

I couldn't breathe.

She stood, still holding the blanket. "I'm glad we talked, Annabelle. I really am."

She turned and walked toward the café entrance. There was a short staircase—four steps, maybe five—leading down to the door.

She reached the top step.

Then she threw herself down.

It wasn't a fall. It was a performance. She twisted as she went, clutching the blanket, her scream sharp and sudden and perfectly timed. She landed at the bottom in a heap, the yellow yarn tangled around her hands.

"She pushed me!" Her voice cracked, raw and desperate. "Oh my God, she pushed me! The baby—"

People moved. Chairs scraped. Someone shouted for an ambulance.

I sat very still at my table, my phone still recording, and watched her cry into my blanket.

I didn't move.

I didn't speak.

I just watched.
