Chapter 2

I didn't post for four days.

No café shots. No book recommendations. No soft-lit captions about peace and chaos. My followers noticed the silence before they noticed anything else, because silence was the one thing I never gave them. For seven years, I had shown up every day, rain or heartbreak, with something curated and warm. Now there was nothing. And nothing, it turned out, said more than anything I could have written.

By the second day, the theories multiplied. By the third, someone found her name.

Dulce Moreno.

A screenshot of her LinkedIn. A screenshot of her Instagram, set to private too late — someone had already saved every photo. Side-by-side comparisons of her face and mine, captioned in ways that made my stomach turn even though they were supposed to be on my side. The hashtag climbed. It stopped being about me and Cassian and started being about all of us — a story the internet could hold in its hands and turn over like a stone, looking for the ugliest angle.

I didn't read all of it. I read enough.

I was folding laundry — his laundry, still, because some habits don't die the moment a marriage does — when my phone buzzed with a text from a woman I barely knew, an old sorority sister of a friend of a friend. *Girl. His firm's name is literally trending with yours. Are you okay??*

I wasn't okay. But I didn't say that.

Cassian came home late that night, later than usual, and he didn't smell like the office. He smelled like nothing — like a man who'd been standing very still in a room for a long time. He set his keys down too carefully, like the counter might break.

"Long day?" I asked. I was sitting at the island, the same one, always the same one.

"Marcus wanted to talk." He said it like it was nothing. His thumb found his cufflink and turned it, once, twice.

"About?"

"Optics." He almost laughed, but it came out wrong, thin. "He's worried about the firm's name. Says it's 'appearing in contexts that aren't ideal.'" He did air quotes with two fingers, and for a second I saw the boy underneath the executive — a boy who had never once in his life been told no by anyone who mattered.

"Are you going to lose your job?"

"No." Too fast. "No. It's fine. It'll blow over."

I didn't argue. I had learned, in four days, that I didn't need to argue anymore. The internet was doing the arguing for me, and it was thorough, and it was patient, and it did not care about optics.

He left the kitchen without eating. I heard him on the phone in the study, low and urgent, the kind of voice men use when they're trying to sound like they're not panicking. I didn't try to listen. I already knew enough.

Two days after that, my phone rang at 11:40 at night.

"Annabelle." His voice cracked in the middle of my name, which he never let happen. "Dulce's having cramps. Bad ones. She thinks — she's scared she's losing the baby."

I stood very still in the guest room, the room that used to be for guests and was now just mine. "And you're telling me this because?"

"I need you to meet me at the hospital." A breath, shaky. "We need to talk. About — about our future. About what happens next. I can't do this without you knowing everything."

There it was. Not an apology. Not even really a confession. A summons.

"Which hospital."

He told me. I wrote it on the back of my hand in pen because my phone was already buried somewhere in my bag and I didn't want to look for it. Some part of me — the part that used to film videos about trust and communication for strangers who believed every word — wanted to scream at him through the phone. *You're asking me to come hold your hand while another woman might be carrying your child.*

But I didn't scream. I said, "Give me twenty minutes," and hung up.

I sat on the edge of the bed for exactly one of those minutes before I moved. Not because I was afraid. Because I understood, with a clarity that felt almost peaceful, that I was not going to that hospital for him. I was going because I wanted to see his face when the truth he'd been protecting finally cracked open in front of him — whatever shape that truth turned out to be.

I had spent seven years letting him tell me what our story was.

Tonight, I was just going to watch it end.
