Chapter 3

The reception hall glittered with champagne flutes and forced laughter. I stood near the bar, nursing a glass of sparkling water, watching Ethan work the room. He was good at this part—the charming, attentive groom. His hand would rest lightly on shoulders, his smile never wavering. No one would guess he was dying inside, mortified by what had just happened with Brinley and the wax figure. But I could see it in the way he kept touching his tie, straightening it when it was already perfect.

I was admiring the ice sculpture when his shadow fell across my glass.

"Iris." His voice was strained, barely above a whisper. "That was a lot. Did you really have to humiliate her like that?"

I turned slowly, meeting his eyes. They were the same eyes I'd fallen in love with four years ago in Seattle, but now they looked like a stranger's. I studied his face—the tight jaw, the furrow between his brows, the way he couldn't quite hold my gaze.

"She wore white to our wedding, Ethan," I said. My voice came out steady, almost calm. "White, Ethan. Not blush. Not cream. White."

He opened his mouth, closed it. His hand went to his hair—that nervous tell I'd memorized. Then he reached for his champagne and drained it in one swallow.

"You're right," he said finally, but the words were hollow, rehearsed. "It's just... she's been through a lot. And she's family."

I didn't respond. I didn't need to. We both knew what family meant in the Bryant vocabulary.

The night wore on. I danced with Ethan's father, with his cousin James, with the best man who kept apologizing for something I couldn't quite catch. But mostly, I sat at our sweetheart table, watching the door, waiting for my husband to return from whatever crisis Brinley was manufacturing now.

At 11:47 PM, my phone buzzed. Ethan's text glowed up at me: "Making sure Brinley gets home safely. She's really shaken up. Be back soon. Love you."

I set the phone face-down and continued waiting.

One hour passed. Then two. The band packed up their instruments. The photographer gave me a sympathetic smile as she gathered her equipment. The catering staff began stacking chairs, their movements efficient and discreet.

At 2:17 AM, I was still sitting there, my wedding dress pooled around me like spilled milk, when my phone buzzed again. "So sorry. Brinley had a panic attack. At the hospital now. Will explain everything tomorrow. Don't wait up."

I didn't respond. I simply stood, gathered my things, and walked out into the night.

What I didn't know then—what I wouldn't discover until Marcus Reid's surveillance footage landed in my inbox three weeks later—was that at 12:43 AM, Ethan and Brinley had walked into the lobby of the Meridian Hotel on East 57th Street. She was still wearing the white gown, though she'd removed the veil. He had his arm around her waist, guiding her through the marble foyer like she was made of glass.

The elevator doors closed on their faces, and the timestamp read 12:45 AM.

But that night, alone at our reception, I only knew that my husband had chosen her. Again.

I touched my wedding ring—the Tiffany band I'd picked out myself, the one that was supposed to mean something. It felt heavy, foreign, like it belonged to someone else's finger.

In the weeks that followed, Brinley inserted herself into our apartment renovation with the enthusiasm of a woman who'd won something. She arrived unannounced, her designer heels clicking against the hardwood floors I'd selected, her eyes sweeping over my work with theatrical disappointment.

"Oh, Iris," she said one Tuesday afternoon, running her fingers along the custom cabinetry I'd spent weeks designing. "This is so... dated. Don't you think?"

I looked up from my sketches. "Dated?"

"Mm." She nodded, her lips pursed in concentration. "It's very... 2019. And this accent wall—" she gestured to the soft sage green I'd chosen for the dining room. "It's just so... expected. We should take it down. Maybe do something bolder. Hot pink, perhaps? It would really make a statement."

She delivered every critique with the same saccharine concern, as if she were saving me from my own terrible taste. As if she were doing me a favor.

"I think the kitchen island should go too," she continued, pacing the space like a general surveying a battlefield. "It's so... functional. Where's the artistry? We could rip it out, start fresh. Maybe something more industrial? Exposed pipes, perhaps?"

Ethan, who had been quietly measuring the living room windows, looked up. "Iris, maybe you should consider her suggestions. She has a good eye."

I set down my pencil and stared at him. Consider her suggestions. As if this were a collaboration. As if this were her home.

But it wasn't, was it? Not yet.
