Chapter 4

I arrived at the apartment at 8:47 AM with a rented sledgehammer and a smile that could cut glass.

Brinley was already there, perched on the windowsill with her latte, scrolling through her phone. She looked up when I walked in, her eyes widening at the tool in my hands.

"Iris? What's that for?"

"You were absolutely right," I said, crossing to the kitchen. The sledgehammer was heavier than I'd expected, solid and purposeful in my grip. "About all of it. The cabinets are dated. The island is too functional. This accent wall—" I gestured at the sage green I'd spent three evenings perfecting. "It's expected. We need to start fresh."

She blinked. Set down her latte. "I... what?"

"You have such a good eye, Brinley." I lifted the sledgehammer, testing its weight. "Ethan was right about that too. So let's do this properly."

I swung.

The first impact sent a spiderweb of cracks through the drywall. Dust exploded into the air, fine and white, coating my hair and shoulders. I swung again. The sledgehammer punched through, leaving a gaping hole where the accent wall had been.

Brinley stood frozen, her mouth slightly open.

"See?" I said brightly, pulling the sledgehammer free. "Already better. What's next? The cabinets?"

"Iris, wait—"

But I was already moving to the kitchen, positioning myself in front of the custom cabinetry I'd designed with an architect in Brooklyn. The wood was white oak, hand-finished, with brass hardware I'd sourced from a vintage dealer in SoHo. It had taken six weeks to install.

I swung the sledgehammer into the lower cabinet. The door splintered, hanging crooked on its hinges. Another swing and it clattered to the floor.

"Stop!" Brinley's voice cracked. "You're destroying everything!"

"I'm following your vision," I said, turning to smile at her. Sweat was beginning to bead at my temples. My arms ached. I'd never felt more alive. "This is what you wanted, isn't it? Something bolder? More artistic?"

I turned to the island—the centerpiece I'd sketched a hundred times, the marble I'd selected from a quarry upstate—and brought the sledgehammer down on its edge. The stone cracked with a sound like thunder.

Brinley was backing toward the door now, her face pale. "You've lost your mind."

"Have I?" I set the sledgehammer down carefully, brushing dust from my jeans. My hands were steady. My voice was steady. Everything inside me was perfectly, terrifyingly calm. "I thought I was finally listening."

I reached into my bag—the canvas tote I'd carried in with the sledgehammer—and pulled out a manila folder. The paper inside was crisp, official, stamped with the seal of the New York County Clerk's Office.

I held it out to her.

"What is that?" Her voice was barely a whisper.

"The property deed," I said. "For this apartment."

She didn't move. Didn't reach for it.

I opened the folder myself, turning it so she could see the name printed in black ink: *Brinley Gonzalez*.

"Ethan bought this place six months before our wedding," I continued. My voice was light, conversational, like I was discussing the weather. "A friendship gift, I assume. Though he never mentioned it to me. I only found out when I was reviewing our joint financial statements last week. Funny how these things come to light."

The color drained from her face. She looked at the shattered cabinets, the cracked marble, the gaping hole in the wall. Her wall. Her cabinets. Her apartment.

"You just destroyed your own property, Brinley," I said softly. "With your own suggestions."

She made a sound—something between a gasp and a sob—and grabbed for the doorframe. Her knees buckled. She slid down the wall, her designer dress pooling around her, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts.

"I can't—I can't breathe—"

I called 911 with the same calm I'd used to swing the sledgehammer. I gave them the address—her address—and waited with her until the paramedics arrived. I even rode with her in the ambulance, holding her hand while she hyperventilated into an oxygen mask.

I didn't say another word.

That evening, Ethan came home at 9:15 PM. I was in the kitchen of our real apartment—the one we actually lived in, three blocks away—making tea. Chamomile. The water was just starting to boil.

He slammed the door so hard the walls shook.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" His voice was raw, furious. "Do you have any idea what you've done? She's in the hospital, Iris. The *hospital*."

I turned off the burner. Poured the water slowly, watching the tea bag bloom in the heat.

"I followed her design advice," I said.

He crossed the room in three strides, his face inches from mine. "You went too far. You *know* you went too far. This isn't—this isn't you."

I set down the kettle. Looked up at him. His eyes were wild, desperate, searching mine for something he wouldn't find.

"When were you going to tell me you bought your best friend an apartment, Ethan?"

The silence that followed was long and complete.

His mouth opened. Closed. His hand went to his hair—that nervous, helpless gesture I knew so well.

He had no answer.

He never did.

I picked up my tea and walked past him to the bedroom. I didn't bring it up again.
