Chapter 2

The morning light filtered through the sheer curtains of my bridal suite, casting a soft glow across the antique vanity where I sat. My phone buzzed against the polished wood, the screen illuminating with a message from Novalee. I picked it up, my fingers steady despite the weight of the moment.

'She's here. White gown. Full length. Just walked in.'

I read the words twice, then set the phone face-down and uncapped my lipstick. The shade was called 'Eternal Promise' – a cruel irony that would have made me laugh if I'd been in a different mood. I applied it with precision, a perfect line of crimson against my pale skin.

Three weeks ago, I'd started preparing for this exact moment. The first time Brinley had mentioned wanting to wear white to a bridal shower, I'd made a note. The second time she'd 'joked' about how she'd always imagined being the one in white at Ethan's wedding, I'd called Novalee. We'd planned for every contingency, but this – this was the one I'd been counting on.

I stood, smoothing the silk of my own gown. The dress I'd chosen was a masterpiece of restraint – elegant, understated, designed to make a statement without screaming it. Everything Brinley's would be, except honest.

'You ready?' My stylist appeared in the doorway, her expression concerned.

'Never more,' I said.

The ballroom of the Manhattan venue was a vision of understated luxury – crystal chandeliers, white roses cascading from every surface, sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. It should have been perfect.

Then I saw her.

Brinley swept through the gathering crowd like a storm front, her white gown trailing behind her in a dramatic sweep. The fabric was obscenely bridal – lace bodice, sweetheart neckline, a cathedral train that seemed designed to trip every woman who crossed her path. She dabbed at her eyes with a tissue, her voice carrying in theatrical sobs.

'I just couldn't bear to wear anything else,' she was saying to a cluster of Diana's friends. 'Ethan would understand. He knows how I feel about him.'

The room rippled with discomfort. Guests exchanged glances, some pulling out phones, others whispering behind their hands. At the altar, Ethan stood frozen, his face cycling through confusion, embarrassment, and something that might have been panic.

Diana Bryant sat in the front row, her spine rigid, her smile so tight it looked painted on. She said nothing. Did nothing. Her silence was a weapon she'd perfected over decades.

I watched it all unfold like a choreographed dance, every reaction exactly as I'd anticipated. Then I checked my watch and excused myself.

Four minutes. That's all I needed.

In the service corridor, I found the security team I'd hired three weeks ago. Two former military men in impeccable suits, both paid handsomely for their discretion and their ability to follow instructions without questions.

'Ms. Elliott,' the taller one said. 'We're ready.'

I nodded. 'And the other matter?'

'Confirmed. The figure is in position, and Ms. Clarke is set up.'

I pulled out my phone and sent a single text to Savannah Clarke, the social media influencer I'd invited as our 'wedding content creator.' Her response came immediately – a thumbs-up emoji and a promise to start rolling in sixty seconds.

When I returned to the ballroom, I was smiling.

I crossed directly to Brinley, taking her hands in mine. Her eyes widened slightly – she'd expected tears, anger, a scene. Instead, she got warmth.

'Brinley,' I said, my voice carrying just enough to draw attention. 'You look absolutely stunning. I have a surprise for you.'

Confusion flickered across her face. 'Iris, I—'

'Security,' I called, and the two men materialized beside us. 'Would you please escort Brinley to her special moment?'

They flanked her gently but firmly, guiding her toward a curtained alcove I'd had prepared. She went willingly at first, curiosity overcoming suspicion, then hesitated as the curtain parted.

Behind it stood a museum-quality wax figure of Ethan, dressed in an identical tuxedo, positioned behind a miniature altar. The craftsmanship was flawless – his eyes even seemed to follow you as you moved.

'What is this?' Brinley's voice cracked.

I took the microphone from Savannah, who was already livestreaming, her camera capturing every perfect angle.

'Ladies and gentlemen,' I announced, my voice clear and steady. 'Brinley has always dreamed of this moment, and I believe every dream deserves to come true.'

The crowd gasped. Phones raised higher. Diana's face went white.

'Brinley,' I continued, 'you've told me so many times how you imagined standing beside Ethan in white. How you couldn't bear the thought of anyone else taking that place. Well, here he is. Your Ethan, waiting just for you.'

Security gently positioned her beside the wax figure. She was trembling now, her theatrical tears replaced by something real and panicked.

'But I—I didn't mean—'

'Of course you did,' I said warmly. 'And now you can have exactly what you've always wanted. A ceremony just for you.'

Savannah zoomed in on Brinley's face as I gestured to the officiant I'd also pre-hired. He stepped forward with a script I'd written myself.

'Friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Brinley and... Ethan.'

The livestream counter ticked upward. Hundreds, then thousands watching.

By nightfall, Brinley would trend nationally as 'The Woman Who Married a Wax Figure.' But that was a problem for tomorrow.

Today, I had a real wedding to attend.
