He found me before I reached the transport office.

'Alena.'

I stopped. Not because the word had any power left. Because I wanted to see his face one more time in the light of what I now knew.

He looked the same. That was the thing that would stay with me later, in the hospital, staring at the ceiling. He looked exactly the same.

'You filed paperwork.' His voice was low and controlled. The voice he used for subordinates who had disappointed him. 'You filed paperwork without talking to me first.'

'There was nothing left to talk about.'

'You embarrassed me.' He stepped closer. 'The colonel's office. The review board still active. You chose right now to pull this stunt.'

I pressed my fingertips together inside my coat pocket. Checked for feeling. Found it.

'I'm leaving, Remington.'

'Your position in this unit,' he said, 'exists because I approved it. You understand that? Your roster slot. Your performance schedule. All of it.' He let that sit for a moment. 'Don't make me remind you how this works.'

I looked at him for a long time. Five years I had looked at this face and seen home. Now I saw the architecture beneath it — the beams and load-bearing walls of a man who had always expected me to hold his weight.

'Then remind me,' I said quietly. 'I'll wait.'

He didn't finish the sentence. I walked away.

Three days later, the transport vehicle hit me at the east crossing.

I don't remember the impact. I remember the sky — flat white, the color of every Alaskan winter I had ever endured — and then nothing. I woke up to fluorescent light and a sound like my own breathing coming from somewhere outside my body. The fixators on my legs were the first thing I saw clearly. Steel rods. My legs suspended at angles that didn't belong to me.

A nurse said something. I didn't hear the words.

I lay there and did the math. The crossing I used every morning. The investigation assigned to Sergeant Delray's unit, Remington's most loyal subordinate. The case closed within forty-eight hours — I heard that from the woman in the next bed, who had heard it in the corridor.

Not an accident.

I pressed my fingertips together against the mattress. The frostbite tingling was still there, dull and faithful. I focused on it. Breathed through it. A dancer learns to locate the one thing that is still working and build from there.

My hands still worked.

He came on the fourth day.

No flowers. No hesitation at the door. He walked in the way he walked everywhere — like the room had been waiting for him — and pulled the chair to my bedside with one hand. He was in uniform. His eagles were back on his collar. Someone had reinstated him quickly. I filed that detail away.

He set an envelope on the blanket near my hand.

'Recommendation letter,' he said. 'For Winona. Lead performer, effective your medical leave.'

I looked at the envelope. Then at him.

'You can't perform,' he said. 'That's just the reality. The unit needs continuity. This is the responsible thing.' He paused. 'I brought a pen.'

He had. He held it out.

I studied his face the way I had studied it a thousand times — looking for the man who had lifted my chin and said 'we.' He wasn't there. He had not been there for a while. I had just kept looking.

My legs throbbed inside their scaffolding. Every breath was a negotiation with the pain. And still he sat there, pen extended, waiting for me to make things easier for him.

I took the pen.

I opened the envelope. I read every line — slowly, while he watched. Then I signed my name at the bottom. The same signature I had written on the voiding papers three days ago. Clean. Without a tremor.

I set the pen on the blanket between us.

'Alena—'

'We're done,' I said. 'You can go.'

He stood. He took the letter. He left without looking back, because men like him never look back — looking back requires believing there was something worth seeing.

I waited until his boots faded down the corridor.

Then I reached for the phone on the bedside table. My hands were slow. They always were, in the cold. But they worked.

Atticus answered on the first ring.

'Alena.' Just my name. The way he always said it — like it was the only word in the sentence that mattered.

'I need you to send someone,' I said. 'A surgeon. The best one you can find.'

A pause. Then, quietly: 'Already done.'

I closed my eyes. Outside the window, the Alaskan sky was the same flat white it had always been. But somewhere south of here, a plane was already in the air.
