Chapter 2

Everest didn't ask why my clothes were gone from the closet.

He noticed. I know he did. He walked past the open door of the guest suite the next morning and paused for half a breath. I saw the shadow of his shoes from where I was sitting at the desk. Then he kept walking.

By the time I came out, he was at the kitchen island eating egg whites and reading something on his phone. He looked up like nothing had happened.

'You're being dramatic,' he said. He didn't smile, but it was close. 'When you're ready to talk like an adult, you know where to find me.'

I poured my coffee.

'I have a meeting,' he added. 'Don't wait up.'

I didn't answer. I carried my cup to the window and stood there until I heard the front door close.

Manhattan was waking up. Gray light on the river. A garbage truck three blocks down. I touched the bracelet at my wrist and watched the street.

Then I went to work.

The penthouse has a study he never uses. Too small, he said once. No view. I had picked it for exactly those reasons.

I opened the laptop. Two screens. A burner phone. A list, handwritten, that I had been keeping for longer than I wanted to admit.

Brooks Enterprises had twenty-three financial lifelines I had quietly threaded through Clarion shell companies over the years. Bridge loans dressed up as private investors. Vendor contracts subsidized at a loss. A credit facility routed through a Cayman entity that nobody at Brooks had ever asked questions about, because the money showed up on time and Everest liked to believe he had earned it.

I started with the smallest one. A line of credit to a logistics subsidiary in New Jersey. Forty million. The kind of number that wouldn't make the news but would make a CFO sweat.

I sent two emails. I made one call.

'Pull it,' I said. 'Today. Cite portfolio rebalancing.'

The voice on the other end didn't ask why. That was the thing about Clarion. Nobody ever asked why.

I hung up and stood at the window with my coffee. The cup had gone cold. I drank it anyway.

One down. Twenty-two to go.

The luncheon was at the Carlyle.

It was Davidson's wife who was hosting — Davidson being one of Everest's oldest partners, a man who would have crossed the street to avoid me a year ago and now kissed both my cheeks like we were sisters. The dining room was all cream silk and orchids. Eighteen women at one long table. Crab salad. Sancerre I didn't touch.

Emely was seated two chairs down from Everest's empty seat. He wasn't supposed to be there. Husbands weren't invited.

He walked in twenty minutes late. White shirt. No tie yet — he carried it folded over his hand like a prop. He apologized to the hostess. He kissed her on the cheek. He passed behind my chair without touching it.

He stopped at Emely's.

'Help me with this,' he said, holding out the tie. 'You know I'm hopeless.'

The room shifted. Eighteen women pretending not to look.

Emely stood. She was wearing pale pink, a color she had chosen to look like a girl. She lifted the tie from his hand and slid it under his collar with the practiced ease of someone who had done it a hundred times in private.

She took her time with the knot. She smoothed his collar. She rose on her toes and whispered something against his ear.

He laughed. Soft. Intimate. The kind of laugh a man saves for one person.

I lifted my water glass. I took a small sip. I set it back down on the exact ring of condensation it had left on the linen.

Davidson's wife was watching me from across the table. Her smile had thinned to a wire.

I smiled back. Warm. Easy.

'The crab is wonderful,' I told her. 'You have to give me the caterer.'

She blinked, then recovered. 'Of course. I'll have my assistant send it over.'

Emely sat back down. Everest took the empty seat beside her and didn't look at me once for the next hour and fifteen minutes.

I ate my crab. I asked Mrs. Hollis about her daughter's wedding plans. I laughed at something someone said about the Hamptons traffic. I touched my bracelet under the edge of the table, just once, and then I let my hands rest in my lap.

When the dessert plates came out, I excused myself and went home.

That night, I didn't wait for him to come back.

I sat at the small desk in the study he never used. I opened the file labeled BROOKS / SUBSIDIARY / NORTHEAST and I read it through one more time, even though I already knew every number on every page.

Then I picked up the burner phone.

'The Boston subsidiary,' I said. 'The credit line through Meridian. Close it tonight. Effective at market open.'

A pause. 'That's three hundred million in working capital.'

'I know what it is.'

'Reason on file?'

'Market fluctuations.'

I hung up.

I sat in the dark for a long time after that. The city blinked outside the window. Somewhere across town, Everest was probably pouring himself a Scotch in a hotel suite that smelled like gardenia and amber, telling Emely that I was being dramatic, that I would come around, that I had nowhere else to go.

I touched the bracelet.

In the morning, his CFO would call him in a panic. He would blame the market. He would straighten his cufflinks while he said it.

He would not, yet, suspect me.

That was the part I needed.

I closed the laptop and went to bed.
