Chapter 3

I came home at four in the afternoon.

The penthouse was quiet. The kind of quiet that feels deliberate. I set my bag on the entry table and walked toward the bedroom to change before my six o'clock call, and that's when I saw the closet door standing open.

I always closed it.

I stood in the doorway for a moment. Then I walked in.

The garment bag was unzipped. Split down the middle, the plastic peeled back like something skinned. Inside — or what had been inside — was gone.

I turned around.

She had arranged the pieces on the bed.

Not thrown. Arranged. Every scrap of ivory silk laid out with a kind of patience that was worse than rage. The bodice in the center. The sleeves pulled away at the seams. The skirt in strips, the lace overlay cut into sections no larger than my palm. The buttons — hand-sewn, original, irreplaceable — scattered like punctuation across the white duvet.

My grandmother had worn that dress to my grandfather's firm's first gala. 1962. She was twenty-four. She had kept it wrapped in tissue paper in a cedar chest for forty years, and when she died she left it to me with a note that said: for when you need to remember what you come from.

I stood at the foot of the bed and looked at what was left of it.

I touched my bracelet.

The room had a sound to it. A high, thin frequency, like something about to break.

I picked up one strip of the lace. It was cut cleanly. Scissors, not fingers. She had taken her time.

I set it back down.

I went to the bathroom. I ran cold water over my wrists. I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time.

Then I called Hanna.

'Where is she right now?'

Hanna didn't ask why. She was already typing. 'The Whitmore. Morrison fundraiser for the children's hospital. She arrived forty minutes ago.'

'Thank you.'

I changed my clothes. I called a car.

The Whitmore was all marble and candlelight. A benefit crowd — two hundred people in black tie, champagne flutes, the particular hum of money performing generosity.

I saw her from across the room.

Emely was in pale green silk, laughing at something a board member's husband had said. Her hair was up. The dress had a draped back, complicated seaming, the kind of construction that took a craftsman a week. She wore it like armor.

I crossed the room.

I didn't run. I didn't raise my voice. I walked to her through the crowd, and when people stepped aside I let them, and when I reached her I took the back seam of her gown in both hands and I pulled.

The silk gave at the zipper first. Then the side seam split from hem to hip. I kept going. She screamed — a real sound, not the practiced kind — and grabbed at my hands, and I stepped back and let the torn panel fall, and the room went absolutely still.

Emely stood there with her hands pressed to her chest, half the dress hanging from her in ruins, her face stripped of everything she usually kept on it.

I looked at her.

'Now we're even,' I said.

Everest came through the crowd fast. He had a glass in his hand and the expression he wore when he needed to perform control.

'What the hell is wrong with you.' Not a question. He stepped between us, positioning himself in front of Emely, his back to me. He touched her face, checking for damage that wasn't there. 'Are you all right? Did she hurt you?'

She made a small broken sound. She pressed her forehead to his shoulder.

He turned around.

I had never seen him look at me the way he looked at me then. Like I was something that had tracked mud across a clean floor.

'I've been patient,' he said. His voice was low, carrying just far enough for the nearest twenty people to hear. 'I've been more than patient. But if you can't behave like a grown woman — like someone worth the name you're currently using —' He stopped. He straightened his cuffs. 'This marriage is over. Not on your schedule. Mine. And you should be grateful I haven't had your things put in the lobby already.'

Around us, two hundred people found somewhere else to look.

I waited for him to finish.

Then I looked at him. Really looked at him — the set of his jaw, the hand still resting on Emely's back, the absolute certainty in his face that this was already settled, that I was already beaten, that he had already won.

I thought about the logistics subsidiary in New Jersey. The Boston credit line. Twenty-one more to go.

'You don't know what over looks like yet,' I said.

My voice was very quiet. Very even.

I turned and walked out through the marble lobby into the cold Manhattan night, and I didn't look back once.
