Chapter 2

I woke up in the SoHo hotel room with sunlight cutting through the gauze curtains. No paint fumes. No chemical headache. Just clean air and silence.

My phone sat on the nightstand, dark and quiet. I'd turned off notifications sometime after midnight, after the hundredth call from Weston went unanswered. The screen showed forty-three missed calls, sixty-two text messages, and a voicemail inbox that had stopped accepting new messages.

I didn't check any of them.

Instead, I opened my laptop and pulled up an email I'd drafted six months ago and never sent. The subject line read: "Portfolio Review — Siena Clark." The recipient was Mr. Palmer, a senior figure in New York's design world who'd approached me at an industry event last spring. He'd looked at the work displayed under the firm's banner and said something that had stuck with me: "There's a very specific intelligence in some of these projects. Not all of them. Just some."

Weston had laughed it off later. "He's just being polite. That's what these guys do at events."

I stared at the draft email. My finger hovered over the delete button, then moved to send.

The response came forty-seven minutes later.

"Siena — I've been hoping you'd reach out. Let's talk. Are you free tomorrow evening? — Palmer."

I read it twice. Then I typed back: "Yes."

That night, I met him at a quiet Tribeca restaurant with exposed brick and soft lighting. The kind of place where conversations mattered more than being seen. Mr. Palmer was already seated when I arrived, a glass of red wine in front of him and a leather portfolio case beside his chair.

He stood when he saw me. "Siena. Thank you for coming."

I shook his hand. His grip was firm, brief. "Thank you for responding so quickly."

"I've been watching the discrepancy in your firm's portfolio for over a year," he said as we sat. "Some of the work credited to Weston Hayes doesn't match his earlier output. Not in material sensitivity. Not in spatial logic. Certainly not in emotional resonance."

I felt something loosen in my chest. "You noticed."

"I notice when someone's fingerprints are all over work that isn't credited to them." He slid the portfolio case toward me. "I had my team pull together a consulting contract. Standard terms. You'd work on a project basis initially, with the option to transition to a senior design role if it's a good fit. Your name on everything. Full creative control. No exceptions."

I opened the case. The contract was clean, straightforward. The compensation was more than I'd been making at the firm — more than Weston had ever made, even with my stolen work inflating his value.

"I'll need to review this with a lawyer," I said.

"Of course. Take your time." He paused. "Though I should mention — I'm hosting a small dinner tomorrow night. A few designers, a curator I work with frequently. I'd like you to meet them. No pressure. Just good conversation."

I looked up. "I'll be there."

The next evening, I returned to the same restaurant. The private dining room upstairs was warm and intimate, with a long table set for eight. Mr. Palmer introduced me to the other guests — two designers whose work I'd admired for years, a journalist from Architectural Digest, and a man standing near the window with a glass of wine in his hand.

"Siena, this is Emiliano Brooks," Mr. Palmer said. "He's a curator. Just back from London."

Emiliano turned, and I registered the details in quick succession: dark hair, warm eyes, a posture that suggested he was comfortable in his own skin without needing to prove it.

He smiled. "Siena Clark. I know your work."

I blinked. "You do?"

"The Gramercy residential project from two years ago." He set his wine down and gestured as he spoke, his hands tracing shapes in the air. "The way you calibrated the light — not just the fixtures, but the material layering, the reflective surfaces. The space didn't just look different. It breathed differently. I bookmarked it."

I felt my pulse quicken. That project had been credited to Weston. I'd designed every inch of it — the custom millwork, the stone selection, the precise angle of the skylights. Weston had submitted it under his name and accepted an industry award for it six months later.

"Thank you," I said quietly. "That means a lot."

Emiliano tilted his head slightly, as if he'd heard something beneath my words. "It stood out because it didn't match the rest of the portfolio. The other projects were competent, but that one had a completely different sensibility. More intuitive. More alive."

I looked at him for a long moment. He wasn't performing. He wasn't flattering. He was simply describing what he'd seen — and he'd seen me, even when my name wasn't on the work.

"I'm glad it resonated," I said, and changed the subject before the heat behind my eyes could become something visible.

But all through dinner, I felt it. That small, unfamiliar stirring behind my ribs. Something I couldn't name yet. Something I wasn't ready to trust.

I filed it away and focused on the conversation. On the future I was building. On the contract I'd sign tomorrow morning, the one that would finally, definitively, carry my name.
