After My Groom Kissed His Mistress on Vacation

8 / 10.0
The chemical scent of fresh paint and new furniture fills my empty Manhattan apartment. Standing alone by the custom marble countertop I meticulously chose, I realize this perfect kitchen—built for a shared life of cooking and hosting—now feels completely hollow. When my phone suddenly buzzes, the silence of my ruined future is broken, forcing me to confront the painful reality of a dream home meant for two that I must now inhabit entirely alone.

After My Groom Kissed His Mistress on Vacation Chapter 1

The smell of fresh paint had become a constant companion. For three days, I'd been breathing it in, along with the chemical undertone of new furniture and the faint sweetness of wood stain. My head throbbed with a low, persistent ache that I'd grown accustomed to as I moved through our—no, my—newly renovated Manhattan apartment.

I ran my hand along the smooth edge of the custom marble countertop I'd selected, remembering the hours I'd spent sourcing the perfect slab. The kitchen was my favorite space in the entire apartment. Clean lines, natural light, every detail carefully considered. It was a kitchen designed for someone who loved to cook, who loved to host, who loved to build a life.

"It's perfect," I whispered to myself, though the silence of the empty space made the words feel hollow.

My phone buzzed on the counter. I glanced at it, expecting another message from the cleaning service about the final touches. Instead, it was Weston.

"Few more days," his text read. "Work emergency. Don't want to rush back with a headache. You understand."

I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the keyboard. No "I miss you." No "Can't wait to see you." Just a vague excuse and a dismissal of my understanding—as if my patience was something he could take for granted.

"When are you landing?" I typed back. "I've been airing out the apartment for days. The fumes are giving me headaches."

Three dots appeared, then disappeared. Then nothing.

I set the phone down and continued adjusting the living room curtains. The fabric was a soft linen I'd selected months ago, the color perfectly complementing the hardwood floors. I'd imagined us hosting dinner parties here, laughing with friends, building the life we'd talked about.

My phone buzzed again.

An unknown number. A video.

I tapped the screen, expecting a wrong number or a spam message. Instead, a woman's face filled the frame—Briana Dunn. Weston's colleague. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes bright with mischief and something darker.

"Hey, Siena," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I thought you should see what your man's been up to."

The camera panned, and there was Weston. My Weston. On a ski lift, his arm wrapped around Briana's waist, pulling her close. The snow sparkled behind them, the mountain air flushed their cheeks, and then—

He kissed her. Not a peck. Not a mistake. A deep, passionate kiss, his hands tangled in her hair, her body pressed against his.

The caption flashed across the screen: "Don't worry, babe. I'm just giving your man some mouth-to-mouth. He needed it more than you know 😘."

I watched it again. And again. My hands didn't shake. My eyes didn't water. Something inside me didn't break—it crystallized.

Without thinking, I forwarded the video. To the Hayes family group chat. To my own family chat. To the company-wide Slack channel.

"Since Weston's been so busy on vacation," I wrote, "I thought everyone should see how he spends his time. Enjoy."

I set my phone face-down on the counter and waited. For what, I wasn't sure. Tears? Rage? The collapse of everything I'd built?

Instead, I felt a strange calm. The apartment suddenly looked different—not like a home, but like a stage set. Every piece of furniture, every carefully selected detail, every moment of love and hope I'd poured into this space—it was all for a lie.

My phone began to vibrate incessantly. Weston's mother's name flashed on the screen, then his father's. Colleagues. Friends. The notifications piled up, each one a nail in the coffin of the life I'd thought I was building.

I didn't answer. Didn't read the messages. Didn't cry.

I packed. One suitcase—my leather sketchbook, my laptop, my original design files on an encrypted hard drive. Everything else stayed behind. The furniture I'd selected. The curtains I'd hung. The life I'd designed for a man who'd never deserved it.

That night, I checked into a boutique hotel in SoHo. The room was small, but it was mine. No paint fumes. No memories. No lies.

I sat on the bed in the silence and opened my laptop. Weston's calls lit up my screen, one after another, but I didn't answer. Instead, I opened my portfolio—the real one, with my name on every design, every concept, every piece of work he'd ever claimed as his own.

For the first time in years, I saw my own talent clearly. And I knew exactly what to do next.
