Chapter 3

It was nearly dark when I stepped out of the headquarters. The wind blew hard across the ridge, cold and sharp against my face.

Titus was standing near the front steps.

His four flat tires had kept him trapped in the valley for hours. His expensive city shoes were soaked through with slush, and his designer coat didn't do much against the Alaskan chill. He was shivering so hard his teeth clicked.

When he saw me, his eyes widened. He scrambled forward, his boots slipping on the ice.

"Delaney," he gasped.

Before I could take another step, he fell hard onto his knees in the snow.

I stopped. My hands stayed inside my pockets.

"Please," he said, looking up at me. His handsome face was red from the freezing wind. "I know I hurt you. I know the gala was a mess. But I haven't slept right in three years. I came all the way out here to fix this. To bring you home."

I looked down at him. My chest felt nothing. No anger. No pain. Just empty space.

"Get up, Titus," I said. "You're blocking the path."

"I'm not leaving without you," he said. His voice turned desperate, but then his old, smooth tone crept back in. The tone of a man who thought money solved everything. "Listen to me, Laney. My mother is arranging an alliance with the Vance family. It's strictly business. I have to marry their daughter for the firm's standing. But it won't mean anything."

I tilted my head. "An alliance."

"Yes," he said, nodding quickly. He actually smiled, thinking he had found the answer. "I'll buy you a penthouse in Manhattan. Anything you want. You'll be my private arrangement. No public drama, no pressure. You'll have my heart, Delaney. I'm doing this because you're too special to lose. Don't you see? I'm putting you first."

He really believed it. He thought offering to keep me as a dirty secret was an honor.

I pulled my tablet from my coat. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell.

With two taps, I connected the device to the smart-glass wall of the headquarters behind me.

The three-story glass facade lit up bright against the dark snow.

First came the cover of *Architectural Review*, with my face under the headline: *Architect of the Year*.

Then came the International Architecture Foundation's Gold Medal certificate.

Then slide after slide of my finished projects across Europe and North America. Multi-million dollar contracts, all signed in my name alone.

Titus stared at the glowing glass. His mouth opened, but nothing came out.

"I don't need your penthouse, Titus," I said quietly. "I build towers you couldn't afford to walk into."

Then I swiped the screen one more time.

The smart-glass shifted to a black-and-white surveillance feed. It was high-definition footage from a hotel corridor during the Gray family's annual retreat last month. The time stamp in the corner read: *02:14 AM*.

On the screen, Titus crept down the hallway in his socks. He didn't knock. He typed the keycode and slipped directly into Goldie's suite. The door shut behind him. He didn't come out until sunrise.

The color completely drained from Titus's face. He froze on his knees.

"Where... where did you get that?" he stammered.

"Your mother tried to book my resort for her charity summit last winter," I said, putting the tablet back in my pocket. "Our security team runs deep background checks on every private client. You're predictable, Titus. You always have been."

He reached for the hem of my coat, but I stepped back. His bare fingers caught only cold air.

"Laney, wait—"

"You're not worth the snow melting under your knees," I said.

I turned around and walked toward the glass entrance. The heavy automatic doors slid open, let me in, and closed behind me with a clean, mechanical hiss.

Over the next three days, Titus disappeared from the valley.

I didn't have to ask what happened. Mia told me over morning coffee. A formal legal injunction had been served to Titus at the town lodge. He was permanently banned from all Cruz Group properties and job sites, backed by a private security detail that escorted him straight to the Anchorage airport.

At the same time, corporate approved an immediate twenty-million-dollar expansion for Phase Two of our eco-resort. No reviews. No committee delays. Just an instant wire transfer.

There was only one person who could do both of those things.

That afternoon, I found Asher Cruz in the central lodge. He was standing by the drafting table, looking over the blueprints for the guest cabins. He wore a simple charcoal sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms.

"You banned him," I said, walking up to the table.

Asher looked up. His dark eyes were calm and steady. "I did."

"And the budget increase?"

"Your design earned it."

I leaned my hands on the edge of the timber table. "You're the Executive Director of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, Asher. You don't handle local site trespassers. Why are you doing this?"

The room was completely quiet except for the hum of the heating vents.

Asher didn't look away. He closed the binder in front of him. When he spoke, his voice was low, carrying a cold, quiet anger that wasn't directed at me.

"Because no one should have to fight the same war twice."

My breath caught.

The words hung between us in the warm air. He didn't say Titus's name. He didn't ask what happened in New York. But the certainty in his voice made my chest tighten.

I looked at his hands resting flat against the paper. For the first time, I noticed how steady they were. And for the first time, I realized Asher Cruz didn't just know my buildings.

He knew my scars.
