Chapter 4

The evening wind rattled the trailer windows. Mia handed me a steaming mug of black coffee.

"You're quiet today, Laney," Mia said, leaning back against the blueprint table.

"I'm reviewing the frost lines," I said, keeping my eyes glued to the drawings.

She gave me a dry look. "Right. The frost lines. Not the billionaire walking around the site like he owns the snow?"

"He practically does. His family funds the whole project."

"Come on." Mia crossed her arms. "What do you really think of Asher Cruz?"

I took a slow sip. The hot liquid burned my tongue, grounding me. "He's sharp. He understands load-bearing structures. He doesn't waste time on corporate fluff."

Mia laughed softly. "Delaney, you talk about men like they're concrete slabs."

"Concrete doesn't lie to you," I replied.

Mia's smile faded into something softer. She looked right at me, her gaze open and warm. "I watched him during the inspection yesterday. When he looked at your designs, Delaney... he doesn't look at you like an employee. He looks at your buildings the way people look at someone they love."

My hand stopped mid-air.

A chill ran down my spine. My thumb reflexively drifted to my collarbone, tracing the sharp bone under my wool sweater.

"He's an executive, Mia. Don't be dramatic."

"I'm an engineer," she said simply. "I deal in facts. Just watch him."

I told myself she was imagining things. People like Asher Cruz didn't love buildings, and they certainly didn't love designers they barely knew. But the observation lodged deep in my chest anyway, refusing to leave.

***

The next afternoon, the storm clouds gathered early.

I was alone in my office, marking redlines on a floor plan, when the heavy timber door slammed open.

It hit the wall with a loud, violent crack.

Patricia Gray stood in the doorway.

She wore a tailored camel coat with a thick mink collar. Her hair was perfectly sprayed, but her mouth was twisted into pure venom. She had flown straight from New York, and she carried the cold air in with her, smelling of expensive perfume and sharp fury.

"You ungrateful little tramp," she spat.

Before I could push my chair back, she crossed the floor in three sharp clicks of her designer boots.

Her hand shot out. Her manicured fingers clawed into the neck of my sweater, twisting the thick wool tight against my windpipe.

The fabric pulled hard. I didn't flinch. I kept my chin up and stared straight into her pale, hateful eyes.

"Titus crawled back to New York with his pride in pieces," Patricia hissed. Her spit landed on my cheek. "You humiliated my son. You broadcast his private life on a wall! You think because some second-rate magazine put your face on the cover, you're somebody?"

"Take your hands off me, Patricia," I said. My voice was low and steady.

Her grip only tightened. Her knuckles turned white.

"You forget who made you," she snarled. "You were a charity case when Titus took you in! Your paralyzed mother would be rotting in a state ward if my family hadn't paid her bills! You owe us everything. Your mother’s breath belongs to Gray money!"

The mention of my mother sent a white-hot flash of anger through my gut, but my face remained stone.

"You will fix this," Patricia demanded, shaking my collar. "You will draft a public statement tomorrow. You will claim that video was a misunderstanding, and you will fly to Manhattan to stand by Titus's side. If you don't, I will use every dime and every connection I have to wipe your name off every firm on this continent. I will ruin you."

"Touch her again, and you won't have a dime left to spend."

The voice came from the doorway.

It wasn't a shout. It didn't echo. But the sheer weight of it made the entire room turn dead silent.

Asher Cruz stood just inside the frame.

He wore an open black coat over a dark charcoal suit. Behind him stood two towering private security guards and Conrad Voss, the Cruz Group’s head corporate attorney, carrying a thick leather binder.

Patricia froze. Her fingers trembled against my sweater, but she sneered. "This is a private family matter, Mr. Cruz. Back off."

Asher stepped forward. His movements were slow, smooth, and terrifyingly calm. He didn't spare Patricia's face a single glance. His dark eyes were locked entirely on her hand clutching my throat.

"Conrad," Asher said.

Conrad Voss opened the binder and spoke in a clear, mechanical monotone. "The Gray family holds three major residential developments currently under construction in the Tri-State area. The Cruz Group owns sixty-two percent of your primary structural steel provider. We control seventy percent of your concrete distribution contracts. And as of eight o'clock this morning, we acquired the master promissory note on your family's primary commercial credit line."

Patricia's face drained of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Asher stopped two feet away. He towered over her, casting a long, dark shadow across my desk. His presence felt like iron.

"One phone call," Asher said softly. He didn't repeat himself. He didn't raise his voice. "Your supply chains freeze before five today. Your lenders call in fifty million in immediate defaults tomorrow morning. Your family empire will be bankrupt before your private jet touches down in New York."

He paused, letting the silence crush her.

"Release her."

Patricia let go of my collar as if the fabric were burning with open flame.

Her hands shook violently. She pulled her mink coat around herself, her breathing shallow and ragged. She looked at Asher, then at Conrad Voss, realizing in an instant that her entire life’s leverage had vanished in thin air.

Without another word, Patricia stumbled backward toward the door. She nearly tripped over the threshold, turning on her heel and practically running down the corridor.

Asher didn't watch her run.

He stepped closer to me. His hand rose—hesitating for half a second—before his bare fingers gently reached out and smoothed the twisted collar of my sweater back into place. His skin was warm.

"Did she hurt you?" he asked. His voice was completely different now—quiet, careful, and low.

My heart was beating hard against my ribs, but my hands stayed still. "No."

A tight muscle jumped along Asher’s sharp jawline.

"Good," he murmured. "Because I'm not done with them yet."
