Chapter 2

Alaska didn’t care about my broken heart. The cold just wanted to freeze my bones.

So I let it. I poured all my anger and grief into the soil.

For three years, I lived in work boots and thermal jackets. I worked fourteen hours a day on the eco-resort. The land was brutal, so I designed buildings that bent with the wind instead of fighting it. I angled the glass walls south by twelve degrees, catching every scrap of sun during the dark arctic winters.

Last month, the International Architecture Foundation awarded me their Gold Medal.

The design magazines put my face on their covers. They called my work *resilience made tangible*. I was thirty-two now. I had made a name for myself across the world, and I had done it without a single cent of Gray money.

Then came the email from corporate.

Our parent firm had a new Executive Director. Asher Cruz. He was the heir to one of the biggest family empires in New York. Rumor said he was ruthless, quiet, and took zero nonsense. Today was his first site inspection.

I was in the site trailer checking load calculations when Mia, my lead engineer, kicked the door open. Frost puffed in with her.

"Delaney, the new boss's chopper just touched down," she said, pulling off her thick gloves. "And you won't believe the drama down in town."

I didn't look up from my blueprint. "What drama?"

"Some rich guy from New York flew into Anchorage yesterday and drove out here," Mia said, pouring herself black coffee. "He checked into the valley lodge. An hour ago, someone quietly sliced all four tires on his rental SUV. Left him stranded in the middle of a blizzard."

My pencil paused. "Did they catch who did it?"

"Nope. Clean cuts. Professional." Mia grinned. "Site security thinks Mr. Cruz's team ordered it before boarding the chopper. The guy who got stranded? His name is Titus Gray."

The pencil snapped in my fingers.

The name hit my chest like ice water. Titus. Here? In Alaska?

My thumb reflexively moved to the edge of my collarbone, tracing the bone beneath my sweater. He hadn't reached out in three years. I had blocked him everywhere. Why would he come now?

And why would Asher Cruz order his tires slashed?

"Delaney?" Mia looked at me. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," I said. My voice was completely steady. "Let's go meet Mr. Cruz."

Outside, the helicopter blades were slowing down. The freezing wind whipped snow across the clearing.

A tall man stepped off the landing pad.

He wore a dark wool coat and heavy leather boots. He didn't rush. He walked with a calm, heavy presence that made the snowy mountains feel small. He had sharp cheekbones, dark eyes, and broad shoulders.

Asher Cruz.

He stopped right in front of me. The cold air turned his breath to white mist.

"Delaney Larson," he said. His voice was deep, quiet, and smooth.

"Mr. Cruz," I replied, extending my gloved hand. "Welcome to the site."

He took my hand. His grip was warm and firm through the leather. He didn't pull away too fast, but he didn't squeeze. His eyes scanned my face, careful and steady. It felt like he was checking on an old friend, not meeting an employee.

"Call me Asher," he said. "Show me what you built."

We walked into the main lodge. The smell of fresh cedar and cut stone filled the air. Light poured through the curved floor-to-ceiling glass.

I expected standard executive talk. Most suits from Manhattan just wanted to know about budgets and deadlines.

Asher didn't ask about money.

He stopped near the central beam. He ran his bare hand over the rough timber. "Local black spruce. You treated it with pine tar instead of synthetic sealant."

I blinked. "Yes. It breathes better in sub-zero temps."

"And the roof truss," he said, looking up. "You used a king-post variation with steel tension rods. Just like the sketch you drew for the Columbia student pavilion ten years ago."

I froze beside him. My breath caught in my throat.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

He turned his head to look at me. His dark eyes were calm. There was no arrogance in them. Only a quiet, focused heat.

"You always hated boxed ceilings," Asher said softly. "You said buildings should breathe like lungs."

"That was a college concept," I said, my guard flying up. "It was never published in the project brief."

"I know," he replied.

He took one slow step closer. He didn't crowd my space. He just stood there, letting the silence settle between us like fresh snow.

"I don't need a briefing to know your work, Delaney," he said. His voice dropped to a low, steady murmur. "I've been watching you build for a very long time."

A shiver ran down my spine. It had nothing to do with the Alaskan cold.
