Chapter 1

Three days before our wedding, the phone rang.

It was eight in the evening. Titus Gray was sitting across from me at our dining table, checking the guest list for the Plaza ballroom.

He answered on the second ring. I didn't need to guess who it was. The high, breathless crying came right through the speaker.

"Titus... he left me," Goldie sobbed. "I’m all alone in Chicago. Please... I can't breathe."

Titus stood up instantly. The paper in his hand fluttered to the rug.

"Goldie? Don't move," he said. His voice was thick with panic. "Stay in your hotel room. I'm coming right now."

He hung up and went straight to the bedroom closet for his coat.

"Titus," I said. My voice was completely flat. "The rehearsal is tomorrow. The caterers are locked in. Three hundred guests are flying in."

He didn't stop packing his overnight bag. "Goldie is having a breakdown, Delaney. Have a heart."

"This is the ninety-ninth time," I said.

I had counted. Every birthday, every holiday, every single milestone over the last ten years, Goldie had an emergency. And every single time, Titus dropped everything and ran.

Titus zipped his bag with a sharp jerk. He turned to face me. His handsome face was cold and smooth.

"Call the wedding planner," he instructed. "Tell everyone you got cold feet. Say you need more time."

"I won't lie for you," I said.

He stepped closer. He didn't raise his voice. He never had to.

"You will, Delaney. Because if you make me or Goldie look bad, my accountant stops wiring funds to Seattle on Friday. Your mother’s facility isn't cheap. Do you want her thrown out on the street?"

The air left my lungs. The room went dead silent.

He patted my cheek once, hard and brief. "Be a good girl. I’ll be back Sunday."

The front door clicked shut.

I didn't cry. My eyes stayed completely dry. Something inside my chest—a tiny flame I had protected for a decade—simply went out.

I sat down on the sofa and opened my laptop.

I pulled up the wedding folders. One by one, I clicked delete.

The floral arrangements. The seating charts. The vendor contracts. The honeymoon flights to Italy. Ten years of waiting, erased in three seconds.

Then I opened a blank document. I wrote five short sentences. It was a formal notice dissolving our engagement. No tears. No accusations. Just clean, sharp lines. I printed it, slipped it into an envelope, and set it dead center on the kitchen island.

After that, I logged into my company’s portal.

Our architecture firm had an open posting for a lead designer on a sustainable housing project in rural Alaska. Nobody wanted it. The winters were dark, and the conditions were brutal.

I clicked *Submit Transfer Request*.

The next evening was the firm’s annual holiday gala in Manhattan.

I had to attend. My director was finalizing transfer approvals, and I needed to sign the paperwork in person.

I wore a simple black silk slip dress. Titus had flown back from Chicago that afternoon. Goldie was right beside him, draped over his arm in a glittering pink gown. She didn't look like a woman with a broken heart. She looked like a cat that had eaten the canary.

I stood by the catering table, waiting for my boss. Goldie drifted over with a glass in her hand.

"You look tired, Delaney," she whispered. Her lips curled into a tiny, mocking smile.

Before I could reply, Goldie dropped her glass. It shattered against the marble floor.

She grabbed her throat, wheezing loudly. "Peanuts... I can't breathe! She gave it to me! Delaney knew I was allergic!"

The jazz quartet stopped playing. Three hundred colleagues and senior partners turned around.

Titus crossed the floor in three strides. He didn't check her pulse. He didn't look at the food. He just glared at me with pure disgust.

"What is wrong with you?" he roared.

He shoved me.

His palms slammed into my shoulders with all his weight. I stumbled backward. Right behind me stood the towering, six-foot champagne pyramid.

The crash was deafening.

Glass exploded in every direction. Cold, sticky alcohol drenched my hair, my dress, and my skin. Crystal stems snapped against my arms, opening sharp stinging lines on my wrists. I hit the wet floor hard among hundreds of jagged shards.

The ballroom fell into a stunned, terrifying silence.

Titus knelt by Goldie, wrapping his suit jacket around her shoulders. He never once looked in my direction.

I didn't scream. I didn't ask for help.

Slowly, carefully, I pushed myself up from the glass. The wet silk clung heavy and cold to my legs.

I looked down at the three-carat diamond on my left ring finger. Titus had put it there five years ago. It had felt like a promise back then. Now, it was just a receipt for a decade of humiliation.

I slid the ring off my wet finger.

I placed it gently on the nearest cocktail table, right beside an empty napkin.

Then I turned.

My spine was straight. My chin was lifted. With steady hands and quiet steps, I walked through the parted crowd, leaving a trail of champagne across the white carpet.

At dawn, I was sitting at Gate 22 at JFK.

I carried one small suitcase of winter clothes. Tucked under my arm was my worn leather sketchbook from my sophomore year at Columbia.

Inside the back cover was a thick manila envelope.

It held dozens of letters, all typed on heavy cream paper and signed only with the letter *Y*.

The anonymous scholarship checks that paid my tuition when my mother had her accident. The quiet notes that praised my blueprints.

*Your lines have soul, Delaney. Don't ever stop.*

I had never found out who sent them. But during the darkest nights with Titus, those few words were the only thing that kept me from breaking.

The gate agent picked up the microphone. "Flight 412 to Anchorage, now boarding."

I stood up, picked up my bag, and walked down the jet bridge.

I never looked back.
