Chapter 4

I submitted the resignation from my hospital bed on a Tuesday morning.

Formal letterhead. Professional language. I requested that my final day be handled with courtesy. I didn't ask for anything else. I didn't expect it.

They gave me Thursday.

I arrived at Medina Corp at nine sharp. Grey blazer again — the same one from The Aldrich, dry-cleaned, like nothing had happened. Portfolio case on my back. The original CloudVeil Valley files inside it: dated sketches, timestamped digital records, the complete design evolution in my own hand going back four years. Every margin note. Every revision. My parents' names written in pencil at the top of the first concept drawing because that's how I started it, alone in my apartment at 2 AM, three weeks after the accident.

I was there to collect my remaining files. That was all.

The lobby guard let me through without meeting my eyes. The elevator opened on thirty-one. I could hear it before the doors parted — the low murmur of a presentation in progress, the click of a slide advancing, a voice I recognized.

Nadia's voice.

I walked to the boardroom doors and looked through the glass panel.

The room was full. Shareholders, board members, three people I recognized from the architecture press. The main screen at the head of the table showed a rendering I knew better than my own reflection.

CloudVeil Valley. The memorial garden. The overlook. The cantilevered walkway I'd designed to follow the exact sight line from the spot where my parents' car had gone off the road, so that whoever stood there would see what they saw last — the valley, the light, the particular bend of the river.

Nadia Munoz stood at the podium with a clicker in her hand and my work on the screen behind her.

'—a deeply personal vision,' she was saying. 'Sustainable memorial architecture that honors grief without monumentalizing it. This project represents everything I believe design can be.'

I pushed open the door.

The room turned.

I walked to the center of it. I set my portfolio case on the nearest empty chair and I unzipped it and I took out the original drawings and I laid them on the boardroom table where everyone could see the dates, the handwriting, the four years of revision in my own pencil.

'My name is Lorelei Castro,' I said. My voice came out level. 'I designed this project. The original concept files are timestamped to November four years ago. The design notes are in my hand. The site survey data was collected by me, personally, at a location I chose because my parents died there.' I looked at the room. Not at Cullen. Not yet. 'I'm not here to cause a scene. I'm here because this is mine, and the record should reflect that.'

The room hesitated.

For one moment — maybe three seconds, maybe less — I watched the shareholders look between me and the screen and the drawings on the table, and I saw it: the flicker of uncertainty. The beginning of a question.

Then Nadia pressed a button on her clicker.

The CloudVeil Valley rendering disappeared.

Every screen in the boardroom filled with photographs from The Aldrich. Me on the leather sofa. Blazer gone. Coral lipstick smeared across my cheek. Another man's jacket. The visual grammar of a night that looked like exactly what it wasn't.

Gasps. A chair scraping back. Someone at the far end of the table said something low that I didn't catch.

I didn't look at the screens. I kept my eyes on the room.

At the head of the table, Cullen had gone rigid. His jaw was set. His hands were flat on the table surface. He was looking at me the way he'd looked at me in the coffee shop — not with guilt, not with grief, but with the cold fury of a man watching a problem he thought he'd contained come apart in front of his investors.

He didn't speak.

Nadia walked toward me.

She was wearing the ring — the massive diamond solitaire he'd given her, the one that caught the light from forty feet away through the atrium glass. She walked slowly. The room let her.

The first slap turned my head sideways.

The diamond caught my cheekbone on the second. I felt the cut open — sharp, immediate, a line of heat across my face. I didn't move. I didn't step back.

She hit me eight more times.

The boardroom was silent. Not the silence of people about to intervene. The silence of people who have decided not to.

Blood ran down my jaw. It dripped onto the original CloudVeil Valley sketches still spread across the table — onto the penciled site survey, onto the margin note in my own handwriting that said *sight line from the bend, where they would have seen it last.*

I picked up the drawings. I put them back in my portfolio case. I zipped it closed.

I walked out.

The marble floor of Medina Corp is pale grey. Almost white. I watched my own blood mark it as I crossed the lobby — small drops, evenly spaced, a trail from the elevator to the revolving door.

I pushed through it into the cold.

I didn't look back.
