Chapter 5

I didn't go to a hotel.

I went to the apartment on West 74th — the one with the cracked tile in the entryway and the window that sticks in winter. The lease was still in my name. I'd kept paying it from abroad because canceling it felt like admitting something I wasn't ready to admit.

I let myself in.

The rooms smelled like dust and old air. Nobody had been here in months. The furniture was exactly where I'd left it three years ago, which meant Cullen had never come. Or had come and not moved anything. I couldn't tell which was worse.

I set my portfolio case by the door. I went to the kitchen.

The box was on the shelf above the refrigerator, where I'd put it before I left. A shoebox. White. I'd told myself I'd deal with it when I got back.

I got back.

I lifted it down and set it on the counter and opened it without sitting down.

The strawberry mochi receipt was on top. Creased soft from years in my wallet, the ink half-faded, the date still legible: February, seven years ago. Two AM. He'd run twelve blocks in the rain because I was crying over my thesis and couldn't explain why, and he'd shown up soaking wet with a paper bag and said nothing, just sat down on the floor beside me and opened the box.

I held the receipt for a moment.

Then I turned on the burner and held the corner of the paper over the flame.

It caught fast. I set it in the sink and watched it go.

The prayer beads were next. Sandalwood, dark with handling, the knot at the end worn smooth. He'd carried them all summer, the summer my mother was in surgery for eleven hours and I sat in the hospital chapel because I didn't know where else to be. He'd knelt outside on the pavement in 104-degree heat for four hours. I'd found out afterward, from the hospital chaplain. Cullen had never told me.

I'd kept the beads because I thought they meant something about who he was.

They meant something about who he used to be. That wasn't the same thing.

I set them in the sink. They burned slower than the paper.

The photographs took the longest. There were eleven of them — physical prints, the kind you make when you want to believe something is permanent. I fed them in one at a time. His face, then mine, then both of ours, then the particular way he used to look at me before he learned to look through me instead.

The dried flower from the night he said he'd build an empire for her — for me — had gone brittle with age. It caught before I even got it close to the flame.

I stood at the sink until everything was ash.

I didn't cry. The grief had already happened. What I felt now was quieter than grief and more final — the specific stillness of a woman who has finished something.

I washed the ash down the drain.

I sat at the kitchen table and opened my laptop.

By four AM, it was done. Every platform blocked. The NDA signed and countersigned — a classified international firm, a project I'd been quietly recruited for six months ago and kept as a contingency I told myself I wouldn't need. One-way flight. Six hours from now.

I left the apartment key on the counter.

I took my portfolio case. Inside it, the original CloudVeil Valley drawings, blood-spotted at the corner where they'd been on the table in the boardroom. I wasn't leaving those.

I walked out without looking back.

---

Three weeks later, in New York, Nadia gave birth.

I know this the way I know most things that happened after I left — secondhand, eventually, when it no longer had the power to touch me. But I've reconstructed it clearly enough.

Cullen was there. He would have been. He'd been performing the role of expectant father for months, and Cullen Medina does not perform anything halfway.

The baby was healthy. He ordered a routine newborn screening — standard precaution, the kind of thing a careful man does. He wasn't suspicious. He was thorough. There's a difference, and it mattered, because it meant the result came back before he had any reason to brace for it.

Blood type incompatibility. His type and the child's type don't produce that result. Biologically impossible.

He ordered the DNA test in the hospital corridor, standing very still, the way he stands when he's already done the math and is waiting for the numbers to confirm what he already knows.

They confirmed it.

The biological father was Stone Bailey. A name I'd never heard. A gambling addict, a recreational drug user, a man who had been blackmailing Nadia for months — the load-bearing lie beneath every other lie, the thing she'd been protecting with everything she had, including me.

Cullen stood in that corridor holding the report.

And three years of architecture came down at once.

Every cruelty. Every verdict. Every moment he'd looked at me like I was the problem he needed to solve.

All of it built on this.

I was somewhere over the North Atlantic when it happened. I was asleep for the first time in days, my forehead against the cold window, my portfolio case in the overhead compartment above me.

I didn't know yet.

I didn't need to.
