Chapter 3

He walked in like he owned the room. He did own the room. He owned most of the rooms I'd ever stood in.

Cullen set his phone face-down on the table across from me. He didn't sit. He just stood there with his jacket open and his jaw tight and fourteen thousand people watching the screen between us.

'Lorelei.' The way he said my name — quiet, final, like a door closing. 'What are you doing.'

Not what happened. Not are you okay. What are you doing.

I kept my hands flat on the table. 'I'm doing what she asked me to do.'

'You're making this worse.'

'I'm sitting in a coffee shop, Cullen.'

His eyes moved to the camera, then back to me. Something shifted in his face — not softening, not quite. More like a man running a calculation. He pulled out the chair across from mine and sat down slowly, and the room got very quiet.

'I want to resolve this,' he said. 'Civilly. I think that's what everyone watching wants too.' He glanced at the screen again. Comments were scrolling. I didn't look at them. 'I think a gesture of good faith is in order.'

I waited.

He took out his phone. Made a call. Forty seconds, no preamble. When he hung up, he folded his hands on the table and looked at me with that expression — the one that means the negotiation is already over, he's just being patient while you catch up.

'I ordered food,' he said. 'For you. A gesture of normalcy. Of peace.'

Something cold moved through me. 'What food.'

'Hot pot. The spicy broth — you used to like it.' A pause. 'I thought it would show people you're willing to move past this without drama.'

He knew. He has always known. Ten years of watching me excuse myself from certain restaurant tables, ten years of me quietly checking menus, ten years of him telling waitstaff without being asked — no chili oil, she has a condition. He knew.

The pot arrived in twelve minutes. A delivery bag, a portable burner, a broth so red it looked like a wound. The delivery man set it up without making eye contact. The camera was still running. Nadia was somewhere behind a screen, watching. I could feel it.

Cullen looked at me across the table. 'If you want to settle this peacefully,' he said, 'eat.'

Fourteen thousand people were watching.

I picked up the chopsticks.

I want to say I had a plan. I want to say I was calculating, that I knew exactly what I was doing and why. But the truth is simpler and worse: I was tired. I was so tired of fighting in rooms where all the exits had been locked before I arrived, tired of being the only person in every scene without a script, tired of watching him look at me like I was the problem he needed to solve.

So I ate.

The broth hit my stomach like a lit match to dry paper. I kept my face still. I kept my hands steady. I took three bites, then four, and the comments were scrolling and Cullen was watching me with something I couldn't name — not guilt, not quite, but something adjacent to it that he was working very hard not to look at directly.

By the fifth bite, I could feel the hemorrhage beginning. I know what it feels like. I've known since I was twenty-two. A deep, specific wrongness, low and spreading, the kind of pain that doesn't announce itself loudly at first. It just opens.

I set the chopsticks down.

I stood up.

I heard Cullen say my name — sharp, sudden, the control finally cracking — and then the floor came up to meet me and the camera was still running and the last thing I saw before the grey took over was the broth, still bubbling on the portable burner, and the comments still scrolling, and Nadia's name in the thread over and over, people tagging her, people saying she'd been right all along.

---

I woke up to a ceiling I didn't recognize for the second time in two days.

Hospital this time. The smell tells you before anything else does.

IV in my left arm. A monitor beeping at a pace that meant stable, not emergency. Curtain drawn around the bed. No one on the other side of it.

I lay there and I looked at the ceiling and I waited for something — grief, rage, the particular despair of a woman who has just been publicly destroyed by the person who was supposed to love her. But what came instead was very quiet. Very clear.

No family to call. No one waiting in the hall.

Just me, and the monitor, and the decision that had been forming for days, maybe longer, maybe since the moment I'd stood in the lobby of Medina Corp and watched him look away first.

I was going to resign. I was going to leave. Not in anger — anger was too much energy, and I was running low. I was going to leave the way you leave a burning building: without looking back, without explaining yourself, without giving the fire the satisfaction of watching you run.

I closed my eyes.

I started making a list.
