Chapter 2

The invitation came through Priya Mehta, a woman I'd done a studio critique with two years before grad school. We weren't close, but we were friendly enough that I didn't question it.

'Industry mixer at The Aldrich,' she texted. 'Good people. Come.'

I almost said no. I was still running the math on my situation — no building access, no income, a phone full of messages from colleagues who'd already chosen their side. Isolation felt safer. But isolation also felt like losing, and I wasn't ready to lose quietly. Public neutrality, I decided, was the smarter play. Show up. Shake hands. Let people see I was still standing.

I wore the grey blazer. I left the ring in my hotel room.

The Aldrich was on the 28th floor of a building on Park, all low lighting and catered wine and the particular hum of people performing confidence at each other. I recognized a few faces. Nobody avoided me, which I took as a good sign. I got a glass of something white and dry and worked the room the way Cullen taught me — slow circuits, genuine questions, let the other person talk.

I don't remember finishing the glass.

I remember reaching for a second drink from a passing tray. I remember a conversation about curtain wall systems with a structural engineer whose name I never caught. I remember the room tilting slightly, and thinking: I'm tired, that's all, three years of Nordic winters and a transatlantic flight and I'm just tired.

And then nothing.

---

I woke up on a leather sofa I didn't recognize.

The ceiling was unfamiliar. The light was wrong — early morning grey, coming through curtains I'd never seen. I sat up and my head rang like something had been struck inside it. My blazer was gone. My blouse was untucked, one button undone at the collar. A man's jacket — dark, expensive, not mine — was draped across my shoulders.

Lipstick smeared across my cheek. I could feel it before I found a mirror. Coral-pink. A shade I don't own.

I sat very still for a moment. I took inventory. I was in one piece. Nothing beyond the staging, I was almost certain — but the photos, when Nadia sent them forty minutes later, wouldn't show that. They'd show what she'd built: a woman in disarray in a stranger's apartment, makeup wrecked, another man's jacket, the particular visual grammar of a night that looked like exactly what it wasn't.

She called instead of texting.

'Good morning, Lorelei.' Her voice was warm. Unhurried. The voice she used at company events when she wanted to be remembered as gracious. 'I hope you're feeling more yourself.'

I didn't answer.

'I have fourteen photographs,' she said. 'I also have the guest list from last night, three witnesses who'll confirm you left with someone, and a very understanding journalist at Architectural Digest who owes me a favor.' A pause. 'You go live today. Two o'clock. You tell them you pursued Cullen knowing about the pregnancy. You tell them you're the one who caused the disruption. You keep it simple and you keep it short, and the photos stay private.'

'And if I don't.'

'Then every firm in New York sees them by four o'clock, and every one after that is a bonus.' Another pause. Softer. 'I'm giving you the chance to control the story, Lorelei. That's more than you gave me.'

I hung up. I sat on the unfamiliar sofa and I breathed.

Fighting doctored evidence against a visibly pregnant woman in the court of public opinion is a losing battle. I knew that before she finished speaking. The photos didn't need to be real. They needed to be plausible, and they were. I had no witnesses to the staging, no chain of custody, no way to prove the drink had been tampered with. What I had was my word against a woman who was carrying what the world believed was Cullen Medina's child.

I agreed. I planned to give them nothing they could use.

---

I went live at two from a coffee shop on 47th — neutral territory, public enough that nothing could happen to me, anonymous enough that the background told no story. I kept my hands flat on the table. I kept my voice level.

For twelve minutes I said almost nothing of substance. I acknowledged the situation. I said I was committed to handling things privately and professionally. I used words like 'complicated' and 'ongoing' and 'I understand why people have questions.' Legally ambiguous. Carefully empty.

Fourteen thousand people were watching when the door opened.

I knew it was him before I looked up. The room shifted the way rooms do when Cullen Medina walks into them — a slight, collective reorientation, like weather changing.

He'd been told I was harassing her. I could see it in his face. The controlled fury, the jaw set hard, the particular look he gets when he's already decided.

He looked at the camera. Then he looked at me.

'Lorelei.' His voice was very quiet. 'What are you doing.'

Not a question. A verdict.

And I understood then that Nadia hadn't just set the stage. She'd written his lines too, and handed him the script before he walked in, and all he'd had to do was believe her.

He always did.
