After My Fiancé Cheated, I Married a Stranger Chapter 1

The rooftop bar in Midtown was packed. Karson had told me it was a "guys' night." I had stopped by to drop off his favorite cigars as a sweet surprise.

I saw him before he saw me.

He sat in a corner booth, hidden beneath the warm glow of heat lamps. His hand rested high on Leilany’s bare thigh. Her head leaned against his shoulder. My fiancé of three years and my best friend since college. The girl whose tuition, rent, and designer clothes I had paid for out of my own pocket.

My heart didn't pound. It went dead cold.

I walked toward their table. Neither looked up until my hand gripped the neck of the bottle chilling in their silver ice bucket. It was three-hundred-dollar vintage champagne—charged directly to the credit card I gave Karson last month.

I popped the cork with a clean snap.

Karson blinked, his eyes widening. "Blaire?"

I tipped the bottle upside down right over his head.

Pale, icy foam drenched his styled hair, his cashmere sweater, and his lap. He gasped, choking on the fizz, stumbling backward against the leather cushions.

Leilany shrieked, scrambling to her feet. "Blaire, wait! It's not what it looks like—"

I stepped in and slapped her across the cheek. Hard. The crack echoed over the patio. The background music suddenly seemed to stop.

I pulled the three-carat diamond ring off my finger. I held it over her glass of Pinot Noir and let go. It plunged into the dark red liquid with a dull clink.

"Every single dollar you borrowed from me," I said. My voice was low, clear, and steady. "Every cent. You have thirty days to wire it back, Leilany."

I turned on my heel and walked out into the cool night air. I didn't look back once.

The next morning, my phone rang at eight sharp.

It was Helen, Karson's mother.

"Blaire, darling," her voice was coated in thick, manipulative guilt. "Boys make mistakes. You two are meant for each other. Think about both families. Think about the humiliation."

"Goodbye, Helen," I said, and cut the line.

Ten minutes later, Karson called. His voice was raw with irritation, completely devoid of guilt.

"You humiliated me last night," he snapped. "Leilany just understands me better than you do, Blaire. You’re always so cold and rigid. Come over right now so we can fix this."

I ended the call without answering. Then I dialed my father.

Richard Lawrence was a retired corporate attorney. He didn't waste time asking emotional questions. He simply listened to the facts.

"Understood," my father said.

Within the hour, my father’s attorney delivered a formal legal notice straight to the Bishop estate. The engagement was terminated. Every joint investment, business referral, and financial agreement between our families was severed instantly.

Karson had spent his entire life getting away with bad behavior. That ended today.

That evening, I sat alone in a dim East Village speakeasy. The bar counter was worn wood. The air smelled of rye and clove smoke. I nursed an amber whiskey, methodically keeping my tears locked away. I refused to look like a victim.

A long shadow fell over my glass.

"Mind if I sit?"

I looked up. Ezekiel Webb.

He was my mother’s former star student from Columbia Law. We had only crossed paths three or four times at quiet faculty dinners. He wore a simple dark sweater and a tailored jacket, looking like a low-key entrepreneur running an ordinary startup from coffee shops.

"Ezekiel," I said, slightly taken aback. "Have a seat."

He ordered a bourbon. He didn't ask why I looked exhausted. He didn't ask about Karson. Instead, his conversation was effortless, sharp, and laced with dry humor. He noticed little things—like the way I unconsciously stirred my drink counterclockwise. When his eyes locked onto mine, his focus was deep and unwavering. Karson had never looked at me with that kind of attention.

One drink led to four. The heavy knot in my chest loosened, replaced by a sudden, electric heat.

We left together into the crisp city fog. We ended up at a downtown boutique hotel, our clothes scattered, tumbling onto cool linen sheets. For the first time in years, my mind went entirely quiet.

The next morning, Ezekiel insisted on walking me back to my SoHo loft.

As we stepped off the elevator, loud pounding shook my door.

Karson was there. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie crooked.

"Blaire! Open this door! You need to come to your senses right now—"

The door swung open.

Ezekiel had stepped inside a moment earlier to drop my bag. Now, he stood in the frame, completely shirtless, wearing nothing but a dark gray towel around his waist. He was broad-shouldered, lean, and utterly relaxed.

Karson froze. His mouth fell open. "Who the hell are you?"

Ezekiel didn't offer an explanation. He slid his phone from his pocket and calmly dialed three digits.

"NYPD," Ezekiel spoke into the speaker, his voice level. "I have an aggressive trespasser harassing a resident outside apartment 4B. Please send two officers."

"You bastard!" Karson lunged, but Ezekiel shut the heavy oak door right in his face.

Ten minutes later, muffled shouting echoed down the hall as the police escorted Karson away.

Inside the quiet apartment, Ezekiel turned to face me.

"Marry me," he said.

I stared at him, stunned. "What?"

"He won't stop," Ezekiel said, his gaze steady and intense. "He thinks you belong to him. Give him a legal wall he can never break through. A clean, binding marriage. No drama."

My heart hammered against my ribs. It was absurd. It was completely reckless.

"Okay," I heard myself say.

Three days later, we walked into the Manhattan City Clerk’s office.

The room was quiet, lit by pale fluorescent lights. A stranger waiting for paperwork served as our witness.

I took the black pen and pressed it to the paper.

*Blaire Lawrence Webb.*

The ink was sharp, dark, and irreversible.

Ezekiel signed beside me, his long fingers steady. As our hands brushed, a sudden, thrilling chill ran down my spine.

I had no idea if this was the smartest decision of my life, or the most catastrophic.
