Chapter 1

The blue light of my laptop screen cast long shadows across my office at Columbia, the kind of light that makes everything look like evidence. It was nearly midnight on Tuesday, and the building had gone quiet hours ago. I'd been preparing my lecture notes on Virginia Woolf's 'A Room of One's Own' — the irony would strike me later — when I noticed a folder I didn't recognize in my cloud drive. Kieran and I shared accounts for convenience, for the life we were building together, and I thought nothing of clicking on it. The folder was named 'NYC Projects – Private.' Inside were hundreds of messages. And videos. My sister's face. My fiancé's voice. Timestamps that stretched back three years. Three years. The same month I'd driven Nola to her first apartment in New York, helped her unpack, introduced her to everyone who mattered in our world. I sat perfectly still, my hands hovering over the keyboard. The air in my office felt suddenly different, like the atmosphere had changed composition. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I simply watched, cataloging details with the same academic precision I brought to analyzing literature. The way Nola laughed at something Kieran said in one video. The casual intimacy of their messages. The endearments. The plans. My entire body felt like it was made of glass. I closed the laptop with a soft click that seemed to echo in the empty room. My gaze fell on the small potted white gardenia on my desk — Kieran had given it to me on our third anniversary. 'My pure white gardenia,' he'd called me then, kissing my temple. I picked it up, the ceramic pot cool against my palms, and walked out of my office, locking the door behind me. The campus was deserted at this hour. I carried the gardenia across the darkened quad, past the library, down the steps to Riverside Drive. The night air was sharp against my skin, but I barely noticed. I found a bench overlooking the Hudson River and set the gardenia down. It looked small and lost in the darkness. I stood there for a long moment, watching the water flow, black and endless. Then I took out my phone and called Hadley. 'It's Skylar,' I said when she answered, my voice steady. 'I need you.' The next morning, I returned to our Tribeca penthouse. The doorman nodded as I entered the lobby, unaware that I was walking into my own execution. I heard laughter before I even opened the door. Nola's voice, light and familiar. Kieran's deeper chuckle in response. I pushed the door open to find them in our kitchen — my kitchen. Nola was perched on a barstool at the island, wearing my silk robe, the one Kieran had bought me last Christmas. She was making coffee, her hair loose around her shoulders, her bare feet swinging. Kieran stood beside her, his hand resting casually on her lower back. The domesticity of it hit me like a physical blow. This wasn't a mistake or a moment of weakness. This was a life they'd built inside mine. I moved to the counter where a glass of milk sat — my usual breakfast. I picked it up, feeling its weight in my hand, and poured it slowly over Nola's head. The milk cascaded down her hair, her face, soaking the front of my robe. She gasped, coffee pot in hand, eyes wide with shock. Kieran turned toward me, his expression shifting from confusion to something like guilt. I didn't give him time to speak. I turned and slapped him hard across the face, the sound sharp and final in the sudden silence. My palm stung. His cheek reddened. And then I walked out, closing the door behind me with a quiet click. In the elevator, I finally felt something — my hands were shaking. But my face remained perfectly still, a mask of composure I'd perfected over years of academic presentations. I drove straight to Hadley's apartment on the Upper West Side, my mind already moving beyond the shock, beyond the pain. When she opened the door, I didn't waste time with pleasantries. I walked to her kitchen island and said, in the same measured tone I used to open a lecture, 'I need you to help me cancel a wedding, sever a family, and destroy a man — all within the bounds of the law.' Hadley didn't ask questions. She poured two glasses of wine, opened her laptop, and was already pulling up the Plaza's contract terms before I finished my second sentence.
