Chapter 2

The whispers started on day two.

I heard them in the break room. In the hallway outside the surgical wing. At the nurses' station when people thought I wasn't listening.

"Did you see his face when he saw her?"

"I heard they were together years ago."

"She must have—"

I walked past. Poured coffee. Reviewed charts. Didn't engage.

Claire caught my eye once across the nurses' station. Her expression said everything her mouth didn't. I gave her a small nod. She went back to work.

The hospital was good at gossip. It was better at moving on when you didn't feed it.

I kept my head down. Did my rounds. Scrubbed in for a valve replacement that took six hours. The OR was the only place where none of it mattered. Where the only thing anyone cared about was whether my hands were steady.

They were.

They always were.

But on the third evening, as I pushed through the staff entrance into the parking garage, a figure straightened from where he'd been leaning against the concrete pillar.

Damian.

I stopped. My keys were already in my hand.

He looked like he hadn't slept. His jacket was expensive but rumpled. Hair uncombed. He'd been waiting.

"Elowyn," he said.

My name in his voice. I hadn't heard it in eight years. It landed wrong. Like a word in a language I used to speak.

I turned to face him fully. Didn't move closer. Didn't move back.

"Don't," I said quietly.

His mouth opened. Closed. He took a breath like he was preparing for something difficult.

"I just—I needed to—"

"Whatever you came to say," I interrupted, "I'm eight years past needing to hear it."

His face did something complicated. Pain, maybe. Relief. Shame.

I didn't wait to identify it.

I walked past him toward my car. My footsteps echoed in the concrete space. He didn't follow.

I got in. Started the engine. Pulled out of the garage into the cold November night.

In my rearview mirror, he was still standing there. A man-shaped shadow under the fluorescent lights.

I didn't look back again.

---

The next morning, Victor Hale called me into his office.

"Dr. Burke," he said, gesturing to the chair across from his desk. "I wanted to discuss your new mentorship assignment."

I sat. Waited.

"Kensley Robinson," he continued. "First-year intern. She's been... struggling. Dr. Patterson and Dr. Okoye both felt she wasn't a good fit for their services."

I'd heard. Patterson had called her "a liability with a scalpel." Okoye had been kinder but equally firm.

"She's eager," Victor said carefully. "But clumsy. I thought perhaps your... precision might be instructive."

Translation: no one else wanted her, and I had a reputation for taking on difficult cases.

"Send her to me," I said. "Tomorrow morning. Five a.m."

Victor looked relieved. "Thank you, Dr. Burke."

I stood. Left his office. Went back to work.

---

Kensley Robinson showed up at 4:55 a.m. the next day.

She was young. Mid-twenties. Dark circles under her eyes and coffee in a travel mug that said "Trust me, I'm almost a doctor." She looked terrified and determined in equal measure.

"Dr. Burke," she said. "I'm ready."

I handed her a surgical tray. "Set this up. Standard cardiac procedure. You have three minutes."

She blinked. Set down her coffee. Started arranging instruments.

She fumbled the first clamp. Placed the scalpel on the wrong side. Hesitated over the suture kit.

I watched without comment.

She finished. Looked up. Waited.

"Again," I said.

She didn't argue. Didn't make excuses. Just cleared the tray and started over.

This time she got the clamp right. Still hesitated on the scalpel placement.

"Again."

She did it four more times. By the sixth attempt, her hands moved with something approaching confidence. Not perfect. But better.

I nodded once. "You'll shadow me today. Don't speak unless I ask a direct question. Don't touch anything unless I tell you to. Understood?"

"Yes, Dr. Burke."

She followed me through morning rounds. Stood beside me during a consult. Watched me review a patient's EKG without fidgeting.

At noon, I sent her to lunch. She came back in twenty minutes.

Something in her reminded me of someone I used to know. Someone who believed that wanting something badly enough and working hard enough would be sufficient.

Someone who learned otherwise.

I didn't know yet if Kensley would make it. But I'd give her the chance to find out.

---

That night, across the city in a Tribeca penthouse, Lilith Vasquez sat on her white leather sofa and scrolled through photos on her assistant's phone.

She stopped on one image.

Damian. Hospital corridor. The moment he'd seen Elowyn Burke.

Lilith studied his face. The guilt. The weight. The look of a man staring at something he couldn't undo.

She'd seen that look before. In smaller doses. In moments he thought she wasn't watching.

She set the phone down. Picked up her own. Scrolled through her contacts and found the number she needed.

The call connected on the second ring.

"This is Lilith Vasquez," she said. "I need a meeting. Tomorrow. Private."

The voice on the other end confirmed.

Lilith ended the call. Looked at the photo one more time.

Then she deleted it.

Some problems required a delicate touch. Some required a sledgehammer.

Elowyn Burke, Lilith decided, required both.
