Chapter 3

The first message came at 6:47 a.m.

I was reviewing pre-op labs at the nurses' station when my phone buzzed. A text from a number I didn't recognize. I deleted it without reading and went back to the chart in front of me.

Three more came in the next minute.

I turned the phone face-down.

Claire appeared at my elbow. She didn't say anything. Just slid her tablet across the counter and walked away.

The screen showed TMZ's homepage.

The headline hit first: OBSESSED EX-GIRLFRIEND STALKS DAMIAN REYNOLDS AT HOSPITAL.

Below it, a photograph. Me and Damian in the parking garage. The angle made it look like I'd cornered him. Like I was leaning in. Aggressive. Intimate.

I hadn't been. I'd been walking past.

But the camera didn't care about truth.

I scrolled. More photos. Me standing too close during Lilith's intake. Me watching him in the waiting area. Every image carefully cropped, carefully angled, carefully captioned.

Below the photos, screenshots of text messages.

*I saw you last night. We need to talk.*

*You can't ignore me forever.*

*She doesn't know you like I do.*

My number. My name. Messages I'd never sent.

I set the tablet down. Face-down. Beside my phone.

My hands didn't shake.

I picked up the next chart and continued my rounds.

---

By noon, the hospital forums were on fire.

I didn't look. But I heard about it. Residents whispering in the break room. Nurses checking their phones and glancing at me. The particular quality of silence that follows when you enter a room.

Kensley found me outside the cardiac ICU. Her face was pale.

"Dr. Burke," she said quietly. "Have you seen—"

"Yes."

She hesitated. "It's not true. Anyone who knows you would know it's not—"

"Go check on the post-op in Bay 3," I said. "His vitals were borderline this morning."

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Nodded and left.

I stood in the hallway and breathed.

My thumb found the scar on my right hand. Traced the ridge slowly.

Eight years. I'd built everything from nothing. Became someone who mattered. Someone whose hands saved lives.

And a few photographs and fake text messages were all it took to make me a headline.

I dropped my hand. Went back to work.

---

The cyberbullying started that afternoon.

I didn't see it directly. I'd deleted my social media accounts years ago. But the hospital's public pages weren't private.

Claire showed me once. Just once. Her tablet screen filled with comments.

*Revoke her license.*

*Psycho ex-girlfriend playing doctor.*

*She probably killed patients just to get his attention.*

Thousands of them. A coordinated swarm. Lilith's fanbase, mobilized and vicious.

The hospital's phone lines were jammed. Patients calling to cancel appointments with me. Reporters trying to get statements. Angry voices demanding I be fired.

I finished my shift. Scrubbed out of a bypass surgery that went perfectly. Wrote my post-op notes with the same precision I always used.

At 6 p.m., Victor Hale's assistant found me in the surgical wing.

"Dr. Burke," she said. "Dr. Hale needs to see you. Now."

I followed her to his office.

---

Victor sat behind his desk. He didn't meet my eyes immediately.

Bad sign.

"Dr. Burke," he said. "Please sit."

I sat.

He folded his hands on the desk. The gesture of a man about to deliver news he didn't want to deliver.

"The board has received multiple complaints," he said carefully. "Anonymous submissions alleging that you improperly accessed a patient's confidential medical records. Specifically, Lilith Vasquez's records."

I said nothing.

"Combined with the... media attention," he continued, "the board feels it's necessary to conduct a full internal ethics review."

I waited.

"Until that review is complete," Victor said, "you're suspended. Your OR privileges are revoked. Your active caseload will be reassigned. You'll remain available for questioning, but you're to stay off the surgical floor."

The words landed like blows. Each one precise. Each one designed to dismantle everything I'd built.

I sat perfectly still.

"Do you understand?" Victor asked.

"Yes," I said.

My voice came out steady. Clinical. Perfect.

"I'm sorry, Elowyn," he said quietly. "But the hospital's reputation—"

"I understand," I repeated.

I stood. Walked to the door.

"Dr. Burke," Victor said behind me.

I stopped. Didn't turn.

"For what it's worth," he said, "I don't believe the allegations."

I opened the door and left.

---

I walked through the hospital on autopilot. Past the nurses' station where Claire watched me with worried eyes. Past the residents' lounge where conversations stopped when I appeared. Past the surgical wing where I'd spent the last eight years proving I belonged.

I found myself at the chapel doors.

I pushed them open and went inside.

The space was empty. Quiet. A few rows of chairs facing a simple altar. Soft lighting that didn't quite reach the corners.

I sat in the back row.

Stared at the floor.

I didn't pray. I'd never been good at prayer. But I came here after every patient I lost. Ten minutes. Just ten minutes to acknowledge the weight before I picked it back up.

This felt like a loss.

My career. My reputation. The only thing I'd ever trusted not to betray me.

Gone.

Not because I'd failed. Not because I'd made a mistake.

Because a jealous woman with a fanbase had decided I was a threat.

I sat in the silence. My left thumb traced the scar on my right hand. Over and over. A rhythm I couldn't break.

Somewhere in the city, Lilith Vasquez was probably celebrating. Damian was probably drowning in guilt he'd earned too late to matter.

And I was sitting alone in a hospital chapel, watching everything I'd built crumble into headlines and hashtags.

I stayed for exactly ten minutes.

Then I stood. Walked out. Went home.

Because there was nothing else to do.
