Chapter 3

The lighter looked small in Camden's hand. Silver. Ordinary. The kind of thing you'd use to light birthday candles.

He held it up so the cameras could see it clearly. The ballroom went quiet in that particular way that means everyone knows something terrible is about to happen and nobody's going to stop it.

I stood at the back of the room. Security hadn't seen me slip in. I'd worn a baseball cap pulled low, kept my head down. I told myself I just needed to see the manuscripts one more time. To know they were real. That they still existed somewhere in the world besides my memory.

Camden flicked the lighter open.

The flame caught the corner of the top page. My father's handwriting — that careful block print he'd used for every route notation for twenty years — curled and blackened. The paper turned brown, then black, then white ash that floated up toward the ceiling like it weighed nothing at all.

I couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't look away.

He burned them one page at a time. Slowly. Like he wanted to make sure every camera got the shot. The Nevada routes where my father had written *Elina age 9 says this turn feels angry* in the margin. The Colorado passes where he'd drawn tiny doodles of mountains to make me laugh during long preparation nights. The annotations about tire behavior in rain, about gravel that shifted under braking, about the way certain corners lied to you if you didn't know how to listen.

Twenty years of his life. The only thing I had left that his hands had actually touched.

Gone.

The flames reflected in the lenses of a dozen cameras. Oakley stood beside Camden with her hand over her mouth like she was witnessing something tragic instead of orchestrating it. A few reporters shifted uncomfortably. Most just kept filming.

Camden let the last page burn down to his fingertips before dropping it onto the pile of ash on the podium. He brushed his hands together. Clean. Done.

"I hope this makes it clear," he said into the microphone, "that I won't be manipulated anymore."

Applause. Not from everyone. But enough.

I turned and walked out. My legs moved on their own. Through the lobby. Through the glass doors. Into the Seattle rain that had started again without me noticing.

I didn't cry. There wasn't anything left inside me that knew how.

I drove back to my apartment and sat at the kitchen table until the sky went dark. Then I sat there longer. My phone buzzed every few minutes. Text messages. Voicemails. I didn't look at any of them.

I traced a corner diagram on the tabletop with my index finger. Left-hander, tightens at the apex, camber falls away on exit. My father used to do this when he was thinking. I'd watched him do it a thousand times growing up. Now I couldn't stop.

I drew the same corner over and over until my fingertip went numb.

The next morning I didn't get out of bed. The light came through the window and moved across the wall and I watched it and didn't move. My phone kept buzzing. I turned it off.

The day after that I made it to the kitchen. I opened the fridge. Stared at the contents. Closed it again. I wasn't hungry. I couldn't remember the last time I'd been hungry.

I sat at the table and traced more corners. Right-hander into a chicane. Flat-out crest with compression at the bottom. Hairpin that opened up if you trusted it.

I could see every route my father had ever taught me. I could hear his voice in my head, patient and warm, explaining why a certain turn demanded respect. Why you had to read the road and not just the notes. Why panic killed faster than the crash.

But his handwriting was gone. Burned. Turned to ash on a hotel podium while cameras rolled and people applauded.

I put my head down on the table and closed my eyes.

The smear campaign didn't stop. I knew because my laptop was still open on the counter, the screen dark but not off. When I finally looked, the hashtags had multiplied. #ClingerElina. #FraudCoPilot. #SabotageAttempt.

People I'd never met were writing essays about me. About how I'd manipulated Camden. How I'd tried to destroy his career out of jealousy. How my silence proved my guilt.

I didn't respond. What was there to say? The truth didn't matter anymore. The narrative had already been written. Oakley had made sure of that.

I closed the laptop.

I went back to the table and traced another corner. Then another. My father's routes lived in my head now. That was all I had left. Memory. Muscle memory. The shape of a turn I could draw with my eyes closed.

The apartment got darker. I didn't turn on the lights. I sat in the gray New York evening and drew invisible routes on a tabletop that would never hold a pace note again, and I thought about how quiet the world gets when everyone decides you don't exist.

My phone stayed off. The messages piled up unread. The internet said terrible things about me and I didn't see any of them because I couldn't make myself look.

I just sat there in the dark and traced the same corners over and over, the way my father used to, the way I'd learned from watching him, and I waited for something inside me to feel like it could move again.

It didn't.
