Chapter 4

The phone rang at two in the morning.

I'd been awake anyway. I spent most nights awake now. Sleep required letting your guard down and I didn't know how to do that anymore.

I stared at the screen. Unknown number. New York area code. Probably another reporter. They'd been calling for weeks, asking for statements, for interviews, for my side of the story that nobody actually wanted to hear.

I let it ring.

It stopped. Started again ten seconds later. Same number.

I picked up but didn't say anything.

"Elina Lawson?" A man's voice. Quiet. Measured. Not a reporter's voice. "Do you have ten minutes?"

"Who is this?"

"Someone who needs a co-driver."

I almost hung up. Another crew looking for cheap labor now that my name was dirt. Another person who'd seen the scandal and figured I'd be desperate enough to take anything.

"I'm not interested," I said.

"I haven't made my offer yet."

"I don't care what it is."

"Ten minutes," he said again. "Tomorrow morning. I'll come to you."

"I'm not taking meetings."

"Nine a.m. I'll bring coffee."

He hung up before I could.

I sat there holding the phone, staring at the dark screen, and I felt something I hadn't felt in weeks. Not hope. Not even curiosity. Just the faint, distant sense that something had shifted in the air.

I didn't sleep that night either. I sat at the kitchen table and traced corners until the sky turned gray.

The knock came at nine exactly.

I looked through the peephole. A man stood in the hallway, tall, dark jacket, holding two paper coffee cups. He wasn't looking at his phone. Wasn't checking the time. Just standing there like he had all day.

I opened the door.

I recognized him immediately. Not from having met him. From footage. From championship reels I'd studied years ago when I was still learning the craft. From the kind of races people showed you when they wanted to explain what perfect looked like.

Dominic Bennett.

He'd disappeared five years ago. Retired at the peak of his career and nobody knew why. The motorsport world had spent years trying to lure him back. He'd ignored all of it.

And now he was standing in my hallway holding coffee.

"Elina," he said. Not a question.

I stepped back. Let him in. He walked past me into the kitchen and set both cups on the table. He didn't sit until I did.

He slid one cup toward me. "Sugar," he said. "I guessed."

I looked at the cup. I hadn't had sugar in my coffee in six years. Camden used to call it juvenile.

I picked it up. Took a sip. It tasted like something I'd forgotten I was allowed to want.

Dominic watched me for a moment, then spoke. "I've watched every rally you've ever called. You're the best in the world. I don't need anyone else."

I set the cup down. "You came out of retirement to tell me that?"

"I came out of retirement because of you."

"You don't know me."

"I know your work. That's what matters."

I laughed. It came out bitter. "You've seen the news. You know what people are saying."

"I don't care what people are saying."

"You should. Sponsors care. Teams care. The entire internet thinks I'm—"

"The internet is wrong." He said it like it was the simplest fact in the world. "I watched the footage from Seattle. The timeline doesn't work. You were outside the garage the whole time. Oakley staged the fall."

"Nobody else thinks so."

"Nobody else was paying attention." He leaned back in his chair. "I'm offering you the co-driver seat. Exclusive. Full partnership. I'm entering the World Rally Grand Prix circuit. We start training in two weeks."

I stared at him. "Why?"

"Because I need the best."

"Why did you retire?"

The question hung in the air. Dominic's expression didn't change but something behind his eyes went very still.

"My co-driver died," he said finally. "Marcus Feld. We grew up together. Drove together for ten years. We were running the final stage of a championship rally in the Alps. There was a corner—left-hander, adverse camber, ice on the inside line. Marcus called it cautious. I ignored him. I was chasing a personal best time. I thought I knew better."

He stopped. Looked at his coffee.

"The car went off the road. Marcus died on impact. I walked away with a broken collarbone."

"I'm sorry," I said.

"I'm telling you this because I want you to know what kind of man is asking for your trust." He met my eyes. "I killed my best friend because I was arrogant. Because I didn't listen. I won't make that mistake again."

I recognized the look on his face. I'd seen it in the mirror every day since my father died. Grief that doesn't fade. Guilt that doesn't let go.

"I'll listen to every word you say," Dominic continued. "I'll trust every call you make. And I'll make sure the world knows exactly who you are and what you're worth. That's the offer."

I traced a corner on the tabletop with my finger. Left-hander, tightens at the apex.

Dominic saw it. "Your father's habit," he said quietly.

I looked up. "How did you know?"

"I watched his races too. Before he died. He was one of the best."

Something in my chest cracked open. Not broken. Just opened.

"Okay," I said.

Dominic nodded once. "We start in two weeks. I'll send you the details."

He stood. Walked to the door. Stopped with his hand on the handle.

"For what it's worth," he said, "Camden Walker is about to learn what it costs to burn the only thing holding him up."

Then he left.

I sat at the table with my coffee going cold and my father's corners still traced on the wood, and for the first time in weeks, I felt like I could breathe.
