Chapter 3

The training jacket went first.

I left it draped over the back of the bench in the sparring yard on Tuesday morning, right where Elle cut through on her way to the stables. I did not fold it. I did not tuck it out of sight. I let the collar fall open so the Luna-scent worked into the lining would ride the wind straight to her.

It was gone before lunch.

The wool coat — the dove-grey one with the velvet trim she had always coveted — I left hanging in the mudroom that afternoon. By the next morning, the peg was empty and Elle was wearing her hair up, which she only did when she wanted a collar to show.

Two garments in twenty-four hours. She could not help herself. She never could.

I took the third piece — a soft charcoal coat, freshly scent-marked — and I sat at my desk with a fountain pen and wrote a single line on a folded slip of paper.

*Northwest accounts — verify before quarter close.*

I sealed the slip inside the inner breast pocket with a stitch so light a curious hand would tear it open in one pull. Then I hung the coat on the hook outside my study, at exactly the height Elle passed each morning on her way to Maxine's sitting room.

It was gone by dusk.

I stood in the empty hall and pressed my fingertips to the cold mark on my neck.

*Write it down, Elle,* I thought. *Write it all down.*

---

Maxine sent for me the next morning.

Her sitting room smelled of bergamot tea and old paper. She did not rise when I entered. She gestured to the chair opposite her desk the way one gestures to a chair for a subordinate, and slid a document across the wood toward me.

"Now that Easton is home," she said, not looking up, "we can resume the standard operational transfers. Nothing you haven't seen before. Pack maintenance, healer stipends, warrior provisions. He'd like continuity while he settles back in."

I let my eyes go wide. I let my hand hover a half-second too long over the page, the way a woman does when she wants to be seen agreeing.

"Of course," I whispered. "Whatever helps him."

Maxine's mouth twitched — not quite a smile. More the small, satisfied movement of a woman confirming a piece of infrastructure was still load-bearing.

I read the document. I did not read it the way she thought I was reading it.

The routing number was new. A variation on the old one — the same prefix, a shifted middle string, a different terminal cluster. The kind of change a woman who did not know what she was looking at would never notice. The kind of change a woman who had spent forty-eight hours cross-indexing five years of ledgers noticed instantly.

I signed.

My hand did not shake. My smile stayed small and grateful.

"Thank you, Maxine," I said. "For trusting me with this while he finds his feet."

"You've been very steady, Juliette," she said, and the condescension in it was almost tender. "Easton is lucky."

"I'm the lucky one," I said.

I walked out with my hands folded in front of me and my eyes lowered. I made it back to my rooms. I locked the door. I photographed the document three times. I noted the new routing number in my ledger in a hand so steady it looked printed.

The hollow behind my sternum gave one low, satisfied growl.

"I know," I murmured. "I know."

---

Elle slept heavily. She always had.

I slipped into her rooms at half past two in the morning, moved on the balls of my feet across the rug I had chosen for her three years ago because I had known even then that it deadened sound. The charcoal coat was folded across her vanity chair. Her handwriting on cream paper was folded into the inner pocket exactly where I had left the trap, only thicker now, weighted with new ink.

I slid it free. I did not read it there.

Back in my study, I unfolded it under the lamp.

Easton's current account identifiers — the same new routing number Maxine had given me that morning. A line item labeled *H.H. — quarterly resumption.* A note in Elle's curling script: *Tell Haley the arrangement is back on. She was getting anxious.*

Haley's arrangement.

I folded the letter carefully. I placed it in the strongbox next to the first one. I turned the key twice and I sat for a long moment with my palm flat on the lid.

*Anxious,* I thought. *Was she.*

---

He was pleased with the venison at dinner.

I had asked the kitchens to prepare it the way he used to like — rare, with the redcurrant sauce, the plate arranged the way his mother's cook had always arranged it. He cut into it with the small, contented sound of a man being reminded that his world had reorganized itself around him.

I waited until he had eaten half of it. Then I set my wine down and folded my hands on the table.

"I've been thinking," I said softly.

He looked up. Indulgent. Already smiling.

"The allied packs are unsettled," I said. "Blackpine, Ironroot — they were at the checkpoint. Word is traveling. If we don't give them something to see, something formal, the whispers will start to shape themselves the wrong way."

His fork paused.

"A Pack Banquet," I said. "For your return. Something proper. Every allied Alpha, every elder, every witness we can gather in one hall. Let them see you home. Let them see us together."

He set the fork down.

I watched the calculation move behind his eyes — legitimacy, consolidation, the public reassertion of an Alpha claim he had abandoned and needed the world to reaccept without questions.

"That's — yes," he said. "Yes, sweetheart, that's exactly right."

"I'll organize every detail," I said. "You don't have to think about a single thing. Let me do this for you."

He reached across the table and covered my hand with his.

"What did I do to deserve you," he said.

I turned my palm up beneath his and laced our fingers together.

"You came home," I said.

And deep in the hollow behind my sternum, my wolf laughed.
