Chapter 4

Liam Cross came to my study at nine in the morning with the sentry rotations already printed and folded under his arm.

He had been my Gamma for four years. I had trained him myself in the second winter after Easton's funeral, when the eastern border was bleeding warriors and no one else would take the work. He stood in my doorway now with the same square shoulders and the same patient face and waited for me to invite him in.

"Sit," I said. "Please."

He sat. He spread the schedule across my desk in the careful, tidy way he did everything.

"Two rings of coverage on the main hall," he said. "Four sentries on each of the visiting Alphas' delegations. Rotating pairs on the perimeter every twenty minutes. Kitchens covered from six through midnight. Northwest service entrance — Renner's team, full coverage."

I leaned over the page and let my fingertip trail along his neat columns.

"Liam," I said softly. "This is beautiful work."

He ducked his head. He never took praise easily.

"Only one thing," I said. "The ceremonial procession — the visiting Alphas enter through the main doors at eight, but the elders from the western circle come in through the northwest passage. It's the old protocol. Maxine insisted."

"I remember," Liam said.

"If Renner's team is stationed there in full formation, the elders will feel received like a threat rather than honored guests. Old wolves. They notice." I traced my finger along the northwest column. "Pull the team back into the interior corridor for the twelve minutes of the elder procession. Let them walk in without warriors standing over them. Then Renner resumes his post the moment the last elder crosses the threshold."

Liam studied the schedule.

"Twelve minutes," he said.

"Twelve minutes," I said. "Ceremonial flow. It's a small thing. But the elders will remember it, and the visiting Alphas will notice we know how to receive them properly."

He nodded once. He was already reaching for his pen.

"I'll brief Renner this afternoon," he said.

"Thank you, Liam."

He folded the schedule back under his arm and rose. At the door he paused.

"Luna," he said. "It's good to have him home. For your sake."

I kept my face very still.

"Thank you," I said. "That means a great deal."

He closed the door behind him with the same quiet care he closed every door.

I sat for a long moment with my hands folded on the desk. The window in the northwest service entrance was open now. Twelve minutes, unwatched, at exactly the hour a small woman and a small child could slip through unseen.

I pressed my fingers to the cold mark on my neck.

*I'm sorry, Liam,* I thought. *I'll make it right when this is done.*

---

The rogue courier met me at the border stone at dusk.

I handed him the folded slip and the silver. He did not read it. He did not ask.

"To the woman at the cottage north of the pines," I said. "Slide it under the door. Do not knock."

He nodded and vanished into the tree line.

The note was three lines.

*The funds have resumed. Easton is being publicly celebrated in three nights. If you want the pup's future secured before his new allies formalize his position, bring the boy to see his father while witnesses can validate his claim. Northwest service door. Eight o'clock. It will be unwatched for twelve minutes.*

No signature. No return path. Just enough fear and just enough hope, pitched at exactly the register a woman like Haley would answer.

I walked back through the dark with my hands in my coat pockets and my breath making small ghosts in the cold. Somewhere in the hollow behind my sternum, my wolf paced.

*Soon,* I told her.

*Soon,* she answered.

---

He came to my chamber the night before the banquet.

I knew his knock. I had known it for six years. I set down my hairbrush and I let him in.

He was in a soft shirt, sleeves rolled, his hair damp from a bath. He looked at me the way a man looks at a possession he has decided to remember he owns.

"Juliette," he said, low.

He crossed the room and cupped my face in both hands. His thumbs moved along my cheekbones the way they used to. My skin remembered him before my mind did, and something in me — some small, stupid, married thing — flinched toward the touch before I could stop it.

My wolf slammed against my ribs.

The force of it took the breath out of me. My knees nearly went. I converted the shudder into a trembling exhale and let my eyes fill.

"Easton —"

"Shh." He tilted my face up to his. "You held them all together. Do you know that? Five years. My mother told me. Every alliance, every border, every winter. You did that."

"I did it for you," I whispered.

"I know you did." His voice went softer. "I'm proud of you, sweetheart. I'm so proud of you."

A tear slipped down my cheek. He caught it with his thumb.

In the hollow behind my sternum, my wolf was snarling — a low, continuous, warning sound that vibrated through my whole chest. I leaned my forehead against his palm and let him feel me shake.

"I missed you," I breathed.

"I'm here." He pressed a kiss to my forehead. "I'm here now."

He held me for a long moment. He did not push for more. He had never needed to push; he had always trusted the bond to do the work for him. When he stepped back his eyes were warm and satisfied, the eyes of a man who had confirmed that the ground beneath him was still solid.

"Sleep," he said. "Tomorrow is a long day."

"Tomorrow," I echoed.

He closed the door behind him.

I stood in the middle of the room with both hands pressed flat to my ribs until my wolf's snarling subsided into a slow, heavy pant. Then I walked to the basin and washed my face until my skin burned.

I unlocked the strongbox. I opened the ledger. I added one line in my own steady hand.

*Night before banquet — visited. Satisfied.*

I closed the book. I turned the key twice.

One more night.
