Chapter 2

The rogue I used was a scrawny half-blood who ran messages for coin and didn't ask questions. I paid him in silver and told him exactly what to say and when to say it. He nodded like it was any other Tuesday.

The message went out that night.

*Ironveil scouts running the northwest corridor. Miller's Crossing is quiet after dawn. Take that route if you want to move safe.*

I knew Easton. I knew the arrogance that would read that message and hear only convenience. He would not question why a rogue happened to know his private routes. He would only think: *of course, someone finally figured out how to be useful to me.*

I dressed for the checkpoint at four in the morning.

I chose the grey wool coat — the one Elle had returned to my closet without a word. I chose the boots that made no sound on gravel. I braided my hair the way I used to braid it when Easton was still alive to me, loose at the temples the way he had liked. Small details. Details a grieving woman would put back on out of habit, without noticing.

Details a dozen warriors would notice.

---

The Blackpine and Ironroot patrols were already at the checkpoint when I arrived. I greeted their captains softly, apologized for the early hour, and said I liked to walk the border on the anniversary week. They nodded with the particular gentleness reserved for widows.

I stood by the checkpoint post with my hands in my pockets and my breath making small ghosts in the cold, and I waited.

He came at 6:14.

I heard his boots before I saw him. My body knew the rhythm of his walking before my eyes confirmed it, and something in me — not my wolf, she was still silent, but something older, something married — recoiled and steadied at the same time.

He rounded the trees.

He saw me.

His face went through four expressions in half a second — confusion, recognition, a flash of raw animal panic, and then, forced into place like a mask sliding down over wet stone, tenderness.

"Juliette," he said.

I let the sob out.

I had been rehearsing it in front of the mirror for two days, but in the moment my body did the work for me — five years of grief I had never been allowed to spend, all of it channeled up through my throat in one clean shattering breath. My knees went. My hands flew to my mouth. I took two staggering steps toward him and I collapsed into his chest before he could think fast enough to keep me off it.

"Easton — Easton, oh Goddess, *Easton* —"

His arms came around me because there were twelve witnesses and there was no other choice.

I felt his heart pounding against my cheek. Not from love. From the sound of a trap closing.

I pressed my face into his shirt and I wept the way a widow weeps when she is handed back her dead. Full-throated. Broken. Real enough that every warrior at the checkpoint took a step back to give us the moment. One of the Blackpine captains turned his face away, embarrassed to be watching.

"Where were you," I whispered into his collar, so quiet only he could hear it. "Where *were* you, love."

His jaw tightened. His eyes flicked once — toward the tree line, toward the road, toward the exit that no longer existed.

"Rogues," he said. His voice was rough. He was pulling the story together on his feet. "Held me — I got out three weeks ago, I've been trying to make it home —"

"Shh," I said. "Shh, you're home, you're home."

I let him hold me. I let the witnesses see him hold me. I let the mark on my neck warm against his shoulder in a way that any watching wolf would read as a bond reasserting itself.

And deep in the hollow behind my sternum, in the room with no floor, something rolled over in the dark and made a sound like a growl.

Just for me.

*Welcome back, love,* I thought.

---

He stood in front of the whole pack that evening.

The great hall was full. Two hundred wolves, elders in the front row, warriors along the walls. Easton wore a clean shirt someone had found for him and the practiced smile of a man who had never in his life doubted his own charm.

I stood beside him in a pale dress, my hand on his forearm, my eyes lowered.

"Rogues from the eastern reaches," he told the pack. "They kept me for years. I got free. I made it home to my mate and my people."

Murmurs. A few gasps. An elder in the front row wiped her eyes.

I pressed my forehead against his shoulder on cue. The hall softened around us — the sound of two hundred wolves collectively choosing to believe a beautiful story.

Behind my closed eyes I catalogued the room.

Elder Marta — mine. I sat with her three winters when her son was dying.

Captain Voss — mine. I was the one who signed his mate's healer stipend when Maxine refused.

The eastern sentries — mine. Every rotation. Every man.

The wolf in my chest growled again, longer this time, and I felt the vibration of it in my ribs like a struck bell.

Easton squeezed my shoulder and I made myself smile up at him.

---

He was in my office by the next morning.

He leaned over my desk in his old easy way, one hand braced on the wood, and pulled up my defense rotations on the tablet like he'd never been gone.

"This northwest sweep is overbuilt," he said. "Cut it to two men. And these captains — Voss and Renner — I want them rotated to the southern line. Fresh eyes."

Voss and Renner. My two most loyal captains. He was moving them where they couldn't watch him.

I clasped my hands in my lap. I let my voice go small.

"Of course," I said. "You know the pack. I've just been — holding things together as best I could."

He smiled at me. Warm. Condescending. Home.

"You did wonderfully, sweetheart," he said. "I'll take it from here."

"Thank you," I whispered.

I walked out of the office. I closed the door behind me. I walked down the hall to my rooms, locked the door, opened the strongbox, and added three lines in my own handwriting to the ledger.

*Override 1 — Northwest defense sweep. Override 2 — Captain Voss reassigned. Override 3 — Captain Renner reassigned.*

My wolf growled a third time, low and steady, and it did not stop for a long while.

I pressed my fingers to the cold mark on my neck.

"Soon," I told her.

She growled once more, and settled.
