Chapter 2

I stopped calling him first. That was the only change I made, and it was enough. Phoenix didn't notice for three days. On the fourth, he showed up at my door with takeout from the place on Atlantic Avenue that I liked.

"You've been quiet," he said, setting the bags on my counter.

I was folding laundry. Biscuit was on the couch, watching Phoenix the way he watched traffic through the window — alert, wary, ready to move. "I've been here," I said.

Phoenix came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. His chin rested on my shoulder. "I miss you," he said into my neck.

I folded another shirt. "You saw me two days ago."

"You know what I mean."

I didn't. I set the shirt down and turned in his arms and kissed him because it was easier than talking. He stayed for dinner. We ate on the couch. He told me about a meeting with his uncle, about some property deal in Connecticut, about Emerald's father's firm and how complicated the merger was turning out to be. I listened. I asked no questions. When he left, he kissed my forehead and said he'd call me tomorrow.

He didn't. I didn't call him either.

I started cooking for one. Small portions. No leftovers. Biscuit got used to it being just us again. He stopped waiting by the door in the evenings. When Phoenix's key turned in the lock one night without warning, Biscuit didn't come to greet him. He stayed in the bedroom. I heard his nails on the floor, retreating.

Phoenix noticed. "What's wrong with the dog?"

"Nothing," I said. I was washing dishes. "He's tired."

Phoenix leaned against the counter and watched me. "You're different."

I rinsed a plate. "How?"

"I don't know. Quiet."

"I'm always quiet."

"Not like this." He reached for my hand. I let him take it, but I didn't stop washing. "Oakley. Talk to me."

I looked at him. His face was open, concerned, the same face that had looked up at me from a parking garage with blood on his mouth and said *thank you* like he meant it. "I'm fine," I said. "Just tired."

He stayed that night. In the morning, I made coffee and he was gone before I finished the first cup. A text came through an hour later. *Breakfast meeting. I'll make it up to you.*

I deleted it. I didn't block him. I just stopped expecting anything.

Two weeks later, I was picking up dry cleaning near Phoenix's building. I wasn't planning to go up. I had no reason to. But I was walking past the lobby when I saw him through the glass — Phoenix and Emerald, standing by the elevator. Her hand was on his arm. He was laughing. She said something and he leaned down and kissed her cheek, easy and public, like it was something he did all the time.

I kept walking. I didn't stop. I didn't slow down. I made it three blocks before I realized I was still holding the dry cleaning bag so tight the hanger was cutting into my palm.

I went home. I hung up the clothes. I sat on the floor with Biscuit and he licked my face and I didn't cry. I didn't feel anything. That was worse.

The next day, Phoenix called. "Come to dinner tonight," he said. "My place. I want to see you."

I almost said no. I should have. "Okay," I said instead.

I took Biscuit with me. Phoenix had said once that he liked having him around, that the apartment felt less empty. I believed him then. I didn't believe much anymore, but I brought the dog anyway.

Emerald was in the lobby when we walked in. She was on her phone, leaning against the wall in a cream coat that probably cost more than my rent. She looked up when the door opened. Her eyes went to Biscuit first, then to me.

"Oakley," she said. Her voice was smooth, practiced. "I didn't know you were coming by."

"Phoenix invited me," I said.

She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "Of course."

Biscuit growled. Low, from his chest. I'd never heard him make that sound before. I tightened my grip on his leash. "Biscuit, no."

Emerald took a step forward. She wasn't looking at me anymore. She was looking at the dog, her head tilted like she was assessing something. "Is he always this aggressive?"

"He's not aggressive," I said. "He's protective."

"Interesting." She moved closer. Biscuit lunged. I yanked the leash back, but not before his teeth caught the hem of her coat. She jerked away with a sharp intake of breath. "He bit me!"

"He didn't bite you," I said. My voice was steady. "He nipped your coat."

She pulled up her pant leg. There was a red mark on her ankle, barely visible. "That's a bite."

I stared at it. It wasn't. It was a scratch, maybe from her own heel. But she was already on her phone, already taking a photo. "I'm calling my lawyer," she said.

Phoenix appeared in the lobby then, coming from the elevator. He saw Emerald first. "What happened?"

"Her dog attacked me," Emerald said. Her voice was calm, controlled, the voice of someone who had already won.

Phoenix looked at me. Then at Biscuit. Then back at Emerald. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she said. "But that animal is dangerous. I want him reported."

I waited for Phoenix to say something. To tell her it was nothing. To tell her Biscuit had never hurt anyone. To tell her to put the phone away. He didn't.

"Oakley," he said quietly. "Take him upstairs."

I didn't move. "He didn't do anything."

"He lunged at her."

"Because she got too close."

Phoenix's jaw tightened. "Upstairs. Now."

I took Biscuit to the elevator. My hands were shaking. Phoenix followed. Emerald stayed in the lobby, still on her phone. The elevator doors closed. Phoenix didn't look at me.

"She's going to file a report," he said.

"For what? A scratch?"

"For a dangerous animal." His voice was flat. "They'll take him, Oakley. They'll put him down."

The elevator stopped. The doors opened. I stepped out. Phoenix caught my arm. "You need to apologize."

I turned. "For what?"

"For the dog. For what happened."

"He didn't do anything," I said again.

Phoenix's grip tightened. "You're not hearing me. If you don't apologize, she'll file the report. If she files the report, they'll take him. Do you understand?"

I understood. I looked at his hand on my arm. He let go.

"Apologize to her," he said. His voice dropped. "On your knees. Make it count. Or I'll file the report myself."

I stared at him. The man in the parking garage was gone. The man on my rooftop was gone. This was someone else. Someone I didn't know.

"Okay," I said.

He blinked. "Okay?"

I walked past him into the apartment. Biscuit followed. I closed the door and locked it. Phoenix knocked once. Then twice. Then his footsteps faded down the hall.

I sat on the floor. Biscuit put his head in my lap. I held him and didn't cry and started counting the days until I could leave.
