Chapter 3

I looked at Phoenix for a long time. He was standing in the doorway of his apartment, waiting for me to kneel. The hallway was quiet. Somewhere below us, the elevator chimed. Biscuit pressed against my leg.

I didn't kneel.

I took Biscuit's leash and walked to the elevator. Phoenix said my name once. I didn't turn around. The doors closed on his face and I watched the numbers descend and felt nothing but the weight of the leash in my hand.

I didn't answer his calls for three days. He left voicemails. Texts. Long paragraphs about stress and family pressure and how he'd handled it wrong. On the fourth day, he showed up at my door with flowers I hadn't asked for and an apology that sounded like a negotiation.

"I shouldn't have said that," he said. "About the report. I was trying to protect you."

I stood in the doorway. Biscuit was behind me, low growl in his throat. "Protect me from what?"

"From her lawyers. From what they could do." He held out the flowers. "Let me in. Please."

I should have closed the door. I hated that I didn't. I hated that I stepped aside and let him in and took the flowers because it was easier than fighting. The pattern was older than Phoenix. Older than Brooklyn. Older than anything I knew how to name.

He stayed for dinner. He was careful with me, gentle, like I was something breakable he'd almost dropped. He didn't mention Emerald. He didn't mention the dog. When he left, he kissed my forehead and said he loved me.

I locked the door behind him and threw the flowers away.

The invitations stopped coming after that. Not all at once. Just slowly, like air leaking from a tire. A gallery opening I'd been copied on — my name disappeared from the thread. A dinner Phoenix mentioned in passing — when I asked about it, he said it had been canceled. It hadn't. I saw the photos later. Him and Emerald and a table full of people I'd met once, twice, enough times to recognize their faces.

The doorman at Phoenix's building started asking for ID. I'd been going up for months without it. Now he needed to see identification, needed to call up first, needed to check a list I wasn't on. Phoenix said it was new building policy. I didn't argue. I stopped going.

When Phoenix came to my place, Biscuit stopped greeting him. He stayed in the bedroom, nails clicking on the floor as he retreated. Phoenix noticed but didn't ask. I didn't explain.

The Crawford family brunch was on a Sunday in November. Phoenix had mentioned it three times, casual, like he wanted me to ask if I was invited. I didn't ask. On Saturday night, he called.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Eleven. My uncle's place. You're coming, right?"

"Am I invited?"

"I'm inviting you."

I should have said no. I went anyway.

The house was in Brooklyn Heights, the kind of brownstone that had been in the family since brownstones meant something. I arrived at eleven-fifteen. The door was open. Voices carried from the back — laughter, the clink of glasses, someone talking about the market.

I walked through the foyer. No one greeted me. The hallway opened into a dining room with too much light and too many people. Phoenix was by the window, talking to his uncle. He saw me and smiled, but he didn't come over.

Emerald was near the bar. She saw me at the same time I saw her. She was wearing cream again, something soft and expensive that made her look like she'd been born in this room. She set down her glass and walked toward me. Not fast. She didn't need to hurry.

She stopped three feet away and smiled.

It wasn't a cruel smile. It wasn't angry. It was the smile of a woman who had already won and was simply waiting for the other person to understand it. Her eyes moved over me — my coat, my shoes, the bag I was still holding because no one had offered to take it.

"Oakley," she said. Her voice was warm, public. "I didn't know you were coming."

"Phoenix invited me," I said.

She tilted her head. "Of course he did."

Someone called her name from across the room. She touched my arm as she passed, light, brief, the kind of touch that looked friendly from a distance. "Enjoy the brunch," she said.

I stood there. Phoenix was still by the window. His uncle said something and Phoenix laughed. He didn't look at me.

I stayed for twenty minutes. No one spoke to me. No one asked my name. When I left, I walked out the front door and no one noticed I was gone.

Phoenix called that night. "Why did you leave?"

"I wasn't wanted there," I said.

"That's not true."

I looked at Biscuit. He was on the couch, watching me. "Okay," I said.

"Oakley—"

I hung up. I didn't block him. I just stopped answering.
