Chapter 2

I had three interviews in my first week. Three different firms. Three different versions of the same pitch: Here's who I am. Here's what I can do. Here's why you need me.

I wore the same navy suit to all of them. I carried the same leather portfolio. I answered questions about campaign strategy and client retention and market positioning with the kind of calm precision that made people lean forward in their chairs.

Nobody asked why I left New York. Nobody asked about the gap in my resume. I had prepared answers for both, but they never came up. Maybe I looked too put-together to be running from anything.

The truth was I couldn't afford to fall apart. Not yet. Not until I had something solid beneath my feet again.

The first firm was too corporate. The second was too small. The third was exactly right.

Roland Price, the senior partner, sat across from me with his arms crossed. He was sixty, gray-haired, and the kind of man who didn't waste time on politeness.

"Why should I hire you?" he asked.

I didn't blink. "Because I'm better than anyone else you're going to interview."

He smiled. Just barely. "Prove it."

I opened my portfolio. I walked him through three campaigns I'd led in New York. I showed him the metrics. The ROI. The client testimonials. I spoke for twelve minutes without hesitation.

When I finished, he nodded once. "When can you start?"

"Monday."

The offer letter came two days later. I read it three times. Then I printed it, signed it, and filed it in a folder labeled **New Life.**

I didn't tell Chandler about the job until that night at dinner. He looked up from his phone, surprised.

"That's amazing," he said. "I'm proud of you."

I smiled. "Thanks."

He went back to his phone. I watched him type. His thumbs moved fast. He was smiling at the screen.

I cut into my chicken. I chewed slowly. I said nothing.

---

The hair tie appeared on Tuesday morning.

I walked into the bathroom to brush my teeth and there it was. Pink elastic. Sitting on the counter next to the sink. My sink.

I stared at it. I knew it wasn't mine. I didn't own anything pink.

I picked it up. I held it between two fingers. I walked into the bedroom.

Chandler was still asleep. His phone was on the nightstand, screen down.

I set the hair tie on the dresser. I took a photo. I opened my Notes app and typed: **Entry 4 — Pink hair tie. Bathroom counter. Left side. Tuesday, 7:12 a.m.**

Then I put the hair tie back exactly where I found it.

On Wednesday, a lip balm appeared on my nightstand. Strawberry flavor. The cap was loose, like someone had used it recently.

I photographed it. I logged it. I replaced it.

On Thursday, a cardigan was draped over the back of the kitchen chair where I always sat. Gray. Soft. Expensive-looking.

I didn't touch it. I just took the picture.

Chandler came into the kitchen while I was making coffee. He saw the cardigan and frowned.

"Is that yours?" he asked.

"No," I said.

"Huh." He picked it up. "Maybe Novah left it. She was here yesterday."

"She was here?"

"Yeah. She dropped off some files."

I nodded. I poured my coffee. I didn't ask why she needed to come inside. I didn't ask why she was leaving her clothes.

I already knew.

---

I found the oat milk on Friday.

I was looking for the regular milk. I pushed aside a container of leftovers. And there it was. A carton of oat milk. Pushed to the back of the fridge.

I pulled it out. I turned it around.

There was a name written on it in black Sharpie.

**Novah.**

In Chandler's handwriting.

I stood there. The refrigerator door was still open. Cold air spilled out around me.

I thought about the five years. The late-night calls. The weekend flights. The time he forgot my birthday but remembered to send flowers the next day with a card that said *I'm the worst.*

I thought about how he used to make me tea when I was stressed. How he stopped doing that sometime in year four.

I thought about the fact that he had never once made me hot cocoa.

I closed the refrigerator. I set the carton on the counter. I took a photo.

Then I opened my Notes app.

**Entry 7 — Oat milk. Her name on it. His handwriting.**

I put the carton back in the fridge. I closed the door. I went to the bedroom and pulled out my laptop.

I opened a new document. I titled it: **Evidence.**

I started copying everything from my Notes app. The timestamps. The photos. The details.

I worked for two hours. I didn't stop. I didn't cry.

When I finished, I had eleven pages.

I saved the file. I backed it up to the cloud.

Then I closed the laptop. I lay down on the bed. I stared at the ceiling.

Chandler came home an hour later. He kissed my forehead.

"How was your day?" he asked.

"Good," I said. "Really good."

He smiled. He believed me.

I smiled back.

And I started planning.
