Chapter 3

Jessie Carroll found me in the parking garage three days before the company dinner.

I was unlocking my car when I heard footsteps behind me. I turned. A woman in her mid-thirties stood there. Sharp blazer. Dark hair pulled back. No smile.

"Margo Warren?" she asked.

I nodded.

"I work with your boyfriend," she said. "I've watched what's happening. I have things you're going to want to see."

She handed me a business card. Jessie Carroll. Senior Analyst.

"Coffee tomorrow?" she asked.

"Yes," I said.

She walked away. No explanation. No small talk.

I liked her immediately.

---

We met at a café two blocks from my office. Jessie was already there when I arrived. She had a laptop open and a folder on the table.

She didn't waste time.

"Novah Cruz has a pattern," she said. "She targets men in relationships. She plays helpless. She gets them to do her work. And she destroys every woman who gets in her way."

I set my coffee down. "How long have you known?"

"Six months," Jessie said. "But I had no proof. And no one who would use it."

She opened the folder. Inside were printouts. Hotel booking confirmations. Expense reports. Email threads.

"Chandler booked a king suite in San Diego last month," she said. "He filed it as business travel. Novah attended the same conference. She wasn't on the official attendee list."

I looked at the receipts. My hands didn't shake.

"There's more," Jessie said. She pulled out another page. "He padded the expense claims. Added meal receipts that don't exist. Forty-seven dollars and fifty cents."

I stared at the number. Forty-seven fifty. He risked his career for forty-seven fifty.

"Why are you helping me?" I asked.

Jessie closed the folder. "Because I'm tired of watching her win. And because you're the only person who can actually do something about it."

I picked up the folder. "What do you need from me?"

"Nothing," she said. "Just use it."

I nodded. I stood. I shook her hand.

"Thank you," I said.

"Justice served," she replied.

---

Chandler told me about the company dinner on Thursday night. He said it like it was a chore.

"It's this quarterly thing," he said. "Pretty boring. You don't have to come."

"I want to," I said.

He looked surprised. "Really?"

"Really."

He hesitated. Then he smiled. "Okay. Great."

I could see the panic behind his eyes.

---

I wore the dress. The one designer piece I owned that made people stop talking when I walked into a room. Black. Fitted. Expensive.

I did my hair. I did my makeup. I looked in the mirror and I saw someone who was done playing defense.

Chandler was waiting by the door. He looked at me and his face went pale.

"You look amazing," he said.

"Thank you," I said.

We drove to the restaurant in silence.

---

The dinner was at a private room downtown. Twenty people. Round tables. Dim lighting.

I walked in and I owned it.

I introduced myself to everyone. Every single person. I shook hands. I smiled. I said the same thing every time: "I'm Margo Warren. Chandler's girlfriend. We've been together five years."

I watched their faces. Some of them looked surprised. Some of them looked uncomfortable.

None of them had heard of me.

I found Novah at the bar. She was wearing a pale pink dress. Soft curls. Wide eyes.

She saw me and her smile faltered. Just for a second.

"Margo," she said. "You look beautiful."

"Thank you," I said. "You too."

I stood next to her. Close enough that she had to step back.

"I'm so glad I could finally meet Chandler's colleagues," I said. "He talks about you all the time."

Her smile tightened. "Does he?"

"Oh yes," I said. "I feel like I already know everything about you."

She didn't respond. She picked up her drink and walked away.

I watched her go. I felt Jessie's eyes on me from across the room.

---

Dinner was served. I sat next to Chandler. Novah was three seats down on the same side.

The conversation was light. Work gossip. Industry news. Someone made a joke about deadlines.

Then Novah spoke. Her voice was soft. Sweet.

"Margo," she said. "I didn't know Chandler had a girlfriend."

The table went quiet.

I smiled. I set my fork down. I looked at her.

"Oh," I said. "He never mentioned me?"

She tilted her head. "No. Not once."

I let the silence sit. I counted three seconds.

"That's strange," I said. My voice was calm. Steady. "He mentions you all the time. I feel like I already know everything about you."

Her face went still. Her eyes flashed. Hard. Cold.

Then she smiled again. The sweetness was back.

"Well," she said. "I'm glad we finally met."

I picked up my fork. "Me too."

Across the table, Jessie caught my eye. She didn't smile. But I saw the approval.

Chandler reached for my hand under the table. His palm was sweating.

I let him hold it. I squeezed once.

Then I let go.

I had work to do.
