Chapter 2

The subway car jerked and I almost missed it, my thumb scrolling out of habit more than interest. Then the photo stopped me cold.

Foster and Etta Morrison, arms looped around each other like they were posing for a Christmas card nobody asked for. Caspian on one side, his hand resting on Raquel's shoulder. Raquel in a cream dress I recognized because I'd been with her once when she bought it, back when we still pretended to be friends. Her son Milo sat on Etta's lap, gap-toothed and grinning. Underneath, in Etta's looping caption font: *Family is everything. So grateful these two have each other.*

These two.

Not Caspian and his mother. Not Caspian and his father. Caspian and Raquel, slotted together in a family photo like a wedding portrait nobody had bothered to schedule a wedding for.

I counted the likes without meaning to. Six hundred and climbing. I recognized names in the comments — Foster's golf friends, Etta's church group, a second cousin who'd once complimented my dress at Easter and asked when Caspian was going to "make it official." Nobody in that comment section seemed to remember I existed. Five years, and I'd been edited out of the family photo like a smudge on the lens.

I looked at it for exactly thirty seconds. I know because I watched the numbers on my lock screen change while I did it. Then I put the phone face-down in my bag, and when I got to my desk that morning, I opened my laptop and booked a viewing for a one-bedroom in Notting Hill. Twelve o'clock next Tuesday, London time. I didn't cry. I didn't feel much of anything, which scared me more than crying would have.

The photo from Etta's dinner table came four days later, from a mutual friend named Priya who clearly meant to send it to someone else. *Isn't this table gorgeous?? Etta outdid herself* — and then the picture, ivory linen, calla lilies, place cards in gold script. I found my old seat right away. I'd sat in that chair every Sunday for three years, Etta's left hand, close enough that she used to reach over and pat my wrist during grace.

Raquel was sitting in it now.

Her hand rested on Caspian's forearm, fingers loose, proprietary, exactly the way mine used to. Milo's booster seat was wedged between Foster and Etta like he'd always belonged there. There was no card with my name on it anywhere in the frame, not even tucked in a drawer somewhere out of shot. They hadn't bothered making one.

I sat with the photo a long time, longer than I needed to. I studied Raquel's hand on his arm the way you'd study a photograph of a crime scene, looking for the detail that would explain everything. Then I forwarded it to Dylan with nothing typed above it. No caption. I didn't need one.

She called eleven seconds later. I let it ring twice before I picked up, mostly so she wouldn't hear how flat my breathing had gone.

"I'm coming over," Dylan said, already sounding like she was moving. "I'm bringing wine and I'm bringing rage, and you don't get a vote on either."

"I'm fine," I said.

"You are so far from fine you can see fine from a plane window." A pause, softer. "You okay?"

I looked at the ceiling of my apartment, at the water stain shaped like Florida I kept meaning to report to my super. "I booked an apartment in London."

"Good," Dylan said. "Book two. I'll come stab someone in a British accent."

I almost laughed. Almost.

*

The rooftop bar happened by accident — Priya's birthday, a reservation none of us checked against Caspian's calendar, because apparently nobody checked anything against Caspian's calendar anymore except Raquel. I saw him before he saw me, laughing with his hand on someone's shoulder, effortless, golden, exactly the man I'd fallen for at twenty-one carrying an armful of textbooks in the rain.

By the time he noticed me across the string lights, it was too late to leave without it looking like retreat. So I stayed. I ordered a drink I didn't want and let the conversation happen around me until Marco, one of the mutual friends, asked — carelessly, kindly, the way people ask things they think are safe — "You two doing okay? This whole thing's been weird for everybody."

Caspian's mouth curved into something practiced. "We're fine. Honestly, it's better this way." He glanced at me, then away, performing for the group instead of speaking to me. "She was always so dramatic. I couldn't breathe around her sometimes."

The table went quiet in that specific way tables go quiet when everyone suddenly finds their glass fascinating. I opened my mouth — I don't even know what I was going to say — but I never got the chance.

The bottle came down before I registered Dylan had even moved. Glass, champagne, a sound like the whole night cracking in half. Caspian went down sideways into the table, and the rooftop erupted — someone screaming, a chair scraping, security materializing out of nowhere with hands already on Dylan's arms.

"He couldn't breathe?" Dylan was shouting, fighting the grip on her elbows, mascara-streaked and magnificent. "Let's see how *he* breathes now—"

I didn't wait to see the rest. I walked to the elevator with my spine straight and my face doing absolutely nothing, the way I'd trained it to for five years, and I didn't look back once.

But the next morning, my phone sat on the counter all through my coffee, and I never called the London attorney at all.
