Chapter 3

Dylan showed up to breakfast with a black eye she didn't have last night and a legal pad she definitely didn't bring by accident. She dropped into the booth across from me, ordered pancakes she wouldn't eat, and slid on her reading glasses like she was about to deliver a verdict.

"I'm not sorry," she said. "For the record."

"Nobody asked you to be."

"Good. Because I have a list." She smoothed the legal pad flat on the table. At the top, in her looping handwriting: THE LIST. Underlined twice.

"Dylan—"

"Shut up, I'm reading." She cleared her throat like a lawyer opening a case. "Item one. Your birthday, year two. He left the dinner I planned because Raquel needed help picking out a headstone font. A font, Isla. Fonts don't need help at nine p.m."

I wrapped both hands around my coffee cup and said nothing.

"Item four. Christmas Eve, year three. He canceled on your dad's — sorry, your not-dad's — gala because Raquel's pipes froze. In July it would've been the AC. There's always a pipe." She flipped a page. "Item nine. Your cousin's wedding. He showed up two hours late smelling like her perfume and told you that you were being 'weirdly territorial about a candle scent.'"

"I remember," I said quietly.

"Item fourteen." Her voice dropped, lost some of its performance. "The allergy thing. Which isn't even on here as one item, because I ran out of room."

I watched the steam come off my coffee and thought about how I used to tell myself grief made people strange. I'd built an entire architecture of excuses — she just lost her husband, he just feels responsible, it's not about me, it's never about me — and somewhere in there I'd convinced myself that was maturity. Patience. Love.

But listening to Dylan read her flat, sarcastic little inventory out loud, something rearranged itself behind my ribs. It wasn't new pain. It was the old pain, finally in focus. Five years of coincidences lining up into a pattern too clean to be an accident.

"He didn't forget me," I said slowly. "He chose her. Every time. On a schedule."

Dylan looked up from the pad, glasses sliding down her nose. "Yeah, babe. That's what I've been trying to tell you since year one."

*

The knock came at four that afternoon. Not Dylan's knock — quicker, formal, done by someone who didn't expect to be let in.

The man at my door wore a gray suit that fit like a second skin and held a manila envelope like it might bite him. "Ms. Reed. Victor Cross. I work with your father's office." He said it the way you'd announce a delivery, nothing more.

"My father sent you."

"He asked me to bring you this personally." He held out the envelope. Inside, a USB drive, and a folded note in handwriting I recognized from birthday cards I'd stopped opening years ago.

*Listen to the audio file first. Then decide.* — N.R.

No explanation. No apology for the years of silence before it. Just an instruction, clipped and precise, like everything else my father had ever given me instead of himself.

I thanked Victor Cross. He nodded once and left before I could ask him anything real.

*

I didn't open it right away. I made dinner I didn't eat. I folded laundry that didn't need folding. By two in the morning I was sitting at my kitchen table with my laptop open and the drive glowing blue in the USB port, and I understood I'd been circling it all night the way you circle a door you already know leads somewhere you can't come back from.

I pressed play.

Caspian's voice first, low, familiar, the voice I used to fall asleep to on the phone. Then Raquel's, softer, almost bored. They weren't shouting. That was the part that undid me — how calm they sounded, like they were confirming a dinner reservation.

"The shift change is at eleven," Raquel said. "Nobody checks the drip until midnight rounds."

"And after?" Caspian's voice, careful.

"It looked exactly like a post-surgical complication. That's what the doctor said. Complication." A small laugh, almost fond. "We just had to be sad enough at the right time."

"He was going to destroy us both," Caspian said. "He found the emails. He was already talking to a lawyer about the trust. We did what we had to do."

The recording ran two more minutes — logistics, timing, something about a nurse's schedule — and then it cut off.

I played it again. And then a third time, my finger hovering over the trackpad, my own reflection ghosting in the dark laptop screen between plays. I wasn't listening for new information anymore by the third pass. I was listening for a version where I'd misheard it. There wasn't one.

When it finished the third time, I sat very still in my kitchen, the city noise outside going on like nothing had happened, like the world hadn't just rearranged itself around a dead man's name.

Deandre. I'd met him twice, at holiday dinners, before he got sick. He'd asked me, once, if I was happy. I remembered thinking it was a strange question for a brother-in-law to ask.

He'd known. He'd been trying to get out in time, and they hadn't let him.

I opened my laptop's browser. The immigration attorney's site was still bookmarked, the London flat still saved to a folder labeled NEW START. I clicked into the visa application, scrolled to the bottom, and pressed cancel.

I wasn't running anywhere. Not anymore.
