Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at 9:47 p.m., three seconds before Grayson stopped speaking.

I felt it the way you feel a door slam shut in an empty house—the incomplete bite he gave me at seventeen, the promise-mark I'd carried for three years, went from a low ember to nothing. Then to something worse than nothing.

"I, Grayson, Alpha of Shadowvale," he said, and his voice did not shake, "reject you, Lyra Lawson, as my mate."

The mark cracked.

I heard it before I felt it—a small dry snap under my skin, like frost splitting a pane of glass. Then the pain came. Not a wound. A cellular unmaking. Every place I'd ever imagined him touching, every place his scent had brushed in the pack house, every place the bond had rooted in me for three years—all of it burned out at once.

I hit the floor. My knees. My hands. My cheek against the flagstones of the ceremony circle. Somebody screamed and it took me a full breath to understand the sound was coming from my own throat.

Above me, Grayson didn't move.

I could see his boots. Polished. Steady. Beyond them, at the crowd's edge, a soft theatrical gasp—Lyla, one hand at her chest, the other reaching for the Beta's arm. Her timing was perfect. It always was.

I dragged my head up. Grayson's face was carved out of stone. But inside him, something was howling. I could hear it the way you hear a neighbor's dog through a wall—muffled, frantic, wrong. He heard it too. I watched him close his jaw and swallow it down.

He silenced his own wolf. To keep her.

And that was when something moved inside me.

Not grief. Not fear. Something ancient, low, with weight behind it. Like a hand pressed against a locked door from the wrong side.

The door opened.

My spine broke in three places and put itself back together longer. My skin peeled off in silver. My white dress—the one I had sewn by hand every night for four months, in the corner of Elena's room while she slept—tore into a pale rag under a coat of fur that caught the torch-light and threw it back like moonlight compressed into muscle.

I stood up on four legs.

The ceremony circle went silent. Not quiet. Silent, the way a forest goes silent when something bigger than the forest walks through it. Grayson's warriors—Caden his Beta, the Gammas, the ranked wolves I had served coffee to for three years—took one step back as a unit.

I was taller than any of them. I could see it in the tilt of their necks.

A voice spoke inside my skull for the first time in my life. Low. Female. Steady as a stone at the bottom of a river.

*Get up, little sister. We have never been what they said we were.*

Somewhere, very faintly, I felt Elena—Grayson's mother, the fading Luna I'd nursed through two winters—reach for her son through the family mind-link. *Grayson, stop—Grayson, listen to me, she is your—*

The link dissolved mid-word. Her wolf was too weak. She couldn't finish the sentence.

I met Grayson's eyes.

He took a step back.

---

I don't remember walking to the pack house. I remember the door. I remember my human hands—shaking, streaked with silver dust that had been fur a minute ago—finding the drawer in the infirmary where Mara kept the surgical silver. I remember the blade cold against my throat and the mark I had worn for three years, cracked open and weeping something that wasn't quite blood.

I pressed the flat of the silver against it. It hissed. I did not.

When I lowered the blade, the scar was smooth. Closed. Mine.

I packed nothing.

---

The banquet came three nights later. Grayson had staged it the way a man stages a photograph: torches, meat, warriors in dress leathers, and himself at the center in a chair one inch too tall. A performance of an Alpha who had made the right choice.

I stood near the tree line because the tree line was where Elena had told me, once, that she used to walk when she needed to think.

Lyla found me there. She always knew where the witnesses weren't.

"There you are." Warm voice. Small smile. She stopped six feet away, hands folded like a woman visiting the sick. "I wanted to tell you myself, before the announcement. Grayson has agreed. You'll be demoted to Omega by the next moon. And there's a rogue in the eastern hills—Grayson thinks it would be a mercy, really, to let him breed you. Something to do. Somewhere to go."

She tilted her head. "You understand."

My wolf did not ask permission this time.

The shift tore through me between one heartbeat and the next, and this time I stayed inside it—present, awake, riding the huge silver body forward the way you ride a river. Lyla's warm little smile fell off her face. She turned to run. She got half a step.

My paw came down on her chest and pinned her flat.

She made a sound like a rabbit.

I leaned close enough that my breath fogged in her hair, and my wolf—my wolf—spoke through my teeth in a growl that shaped itself into almost-words.

Then the Alpha tone hit me from behind, full force, like a wall of water.

*RELEASE HER.*

My back legs buckled. My jaw locked. Every trained instinct in three years of Shadowvale service dragged at me to obey.

I did not obey.

I held.

I held for one full breath, staring down at Lyla's white face, feeling Grayson's command scrape at my ribs from the inside—and I watched, over her shoulder, Grayson's expression change. He had never in his life given an Alpha command a wolf did not immediately answer.

He did not know what I was yet.

Neither did I.

I lifted my paw. Slowly. On my own timing.

I stepped back.

Grayson's voice, when it came, was not quite steady. "Lyra Lawson. By dawn. Off my territory. Or my warriors take you off it."

Behind him, at the edge of the tree line, a scarred grey shape separated itself from the pack—Ghost, the patrol wolf I had raised from a limping pup. He looked at Grayson. He looked at me.

He walked to my side and sat down.
