Chapter 2

Grayson called the meeting within an hour.

I didn't see it—I was already gone—but I heard about it later, the way you hear about fires after the smoke has cleared. Caden told me, months afterward, when the truth didn't cost him anything anymore. Grayson had summoned his Beta and Gamma to the pack house study the moment the banquet crowd dispersed. The door closed. The Alpha tone came out, clipped and final.

"Track her. Forty-eight hours. I want her location."

Caden had looked at him. "She's banished, Alpha. Off your territory means—"

"It means I need to know where she goes." Grayson's voice was flat. "Security protocol. A banished wolf with an unknown bloodline is a liability."

The Gamma—a blunt man named Thorne—had frowned. "Her bloodline?"

"You saw the shift." Grayson's jaw was tight. "That wasn't normal. I need intel."

Caden had nodded once. He always nodded. That was what Betas did. "Understood."

By dawn, Caden and two trackers were at the eastern boundary where my scent trail led into unclaimed forest. They found my prints easily enough—four-pawed, deeper than they should have been, spaced wider than any she-wolf's stride. And beside them, another set. Smaller. Scarred pads. Ghost.

Caden stood there longer than the trackers expected. He stared at those two trails running parallel into the trees, and something in his face went carefully blank. Then he turned around and filed the report exactly as Grayson had ordered.

Location: northeast corridor, unclaimed territory.

Status: moving.

Threat level: to be determined.

The hunt had started.

---

I didn't know about the trackers yet. I was three days gone and moving fast.

Ghost ran beside me, his grey coat a shadow against my silver. We traveled in wolf form because it was faster and because my human body still ached in places the shift had rearranged. My wolf—she had a name now, she'd told me on the second night in a voice like distant thunder: *Celeste*—taught me as we moved.

How to read the forest by scent. How to identify a patrol boundary from the layered territorial marks on trees—three wolves, ranked, the top one's scent sharper and laid higher. How to tell if a stream had been used by a pack upstream from the faint bitter edge of marked stones.

I learned fast. I had to.

We slept in wolf form, curled against each other for warmth. Ghost was a furnace. I was grateful for it. At night the forest went cold and the stars were too bright and I could still feel the phantom ache where Grayson's incomplete mark had cracked open on my neck. The scar was smooth now—I'd made sure of that—but the nerve memory remained. It woke me twice, shivering, before Celeste's low growl in my mind pulled me back under.

*Sleep, little sister. He cannot reach us here.*

Each morning I shifted back to human, pulled the small leather pouch from the bag I'd strapped across my back, and applied the scent suppressants. Wolfsbane-adjacent herbs I'd learned to mix in Elena's infirmary—not poison, just enough to blur the edges of my scent, make it harder to track, harder to identify. I rubbed the paste along my neck, my wrists, the inside of my elbows. Methodical. The same way I used to prepare Elena's fever teas, counting drops, checking twice.

I wasn't fleeing.

I was preparing.

---

On the third night I made camp on a ridge overlooking three valleys. Neutral ground—no pack markers, no patrol scents, just wind and stone and the distant lights of a town I would not enter. I built no fire. I sat with my back against a boulder and Ghost's warm weight pressed to my side, and I began to reconstruct.

Everything I knew about Shadowvale's borders.

I had spent three years managing Grayson's pack house. I knew which patrols ran late. I knew which supply routes the Gamma preferred and which ones he avoided because the terrain slowed the runners. I knew the political fractures—Caden's quiet unease with Lyla's influence, the Elders' growing frustration with Grayson's postponed Mate Ceremony, the whispers I'd overheard in the kitchens about warriors who thought their Alpha had dishonored the Moon Goddess.

I knew where Shadowvale was weak.

I pulled a small notebook from my bag—something I'd taken from the infirmary, used for tracking Elena's medications—and I wrote it all down. Patrol gaps. Chokepoints. The names of wolves who had looked at me with something other than indifference during the rejection ceremony. The supply route that ran too close to rogue territory without adequate coverage.

By dawn I had ten pages.

I also had a destination.

The Lycan Council held a neutral-territory gathering every quarter—a diplomatic assembly where Alphas could negotiate, settle disputes, and avoid war. The next one was three days north. Open attendance. Neutral ground meant even a banished wolf could walk in, as long as she didn't start trouble.

I wasn't planning to start trouble.

I was planning to make an offer.

I closed the notebook. Ghost lifted his head, ears forward.

"We're going north," I said aloud. My voice was rough from disuse. "Three days. And when we get there, we're going to meet someone who can use what I know."

Ghost's tail thumped once against the stone.

Celeste's voice rumbled low in my skull. *Good. Let them see what they discarded.*

I shouldered my bag, shifted, and ran.
