After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became Their Queen Novel Cover

After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became Their Queen

For five years she sat unranked in the back row, third seat from the aisle, watching Cole claim trophies built on her hidden work—her formulas, her border maps, her sleepless nights breathing wolfsbane until metal coated her tongue. Then, four seconds after he lifted the Strongest Alpha of the Northeast, their bond snapped. He rejected her as nothing. But Cole never knew the glass case held his name carved over her genius, and that the woman he cast aside is no longer willing to stay invisible. He has no idea what he just set free.

Chapter 2

The waystation smelled like diesel and wet gravel, and I sat on the bench outside it with my journal in my lap and Nell pacing somewhere under my skin, restless, new, still learning the shape of my bones from the inside. I hadn't slept. I hadn't cried either, which surprised me more than the wolf had.

Packless. That was the word for what I was now, and I turned it over like a stone, checking it for sharp edges. I didn't find any. That surprised me too.

The horse came up the eastern road a little after seven, black coat, no saddle bags, a rider in dark gray who dismounted before the animal had fully stopped. He was tall, composed, and he bowed his head to me the way you'd greet an equal, not a stray.

"Katherine Griffin," he said. "I'm Beta to Prince Soren of Nighthollow. I have an offer for you, written and sealed."

He held out a folded document instead of setting it on the bench between us, which meant I had to reach for it. A small thing. I noticed it anyway.

I read it once fast and once slow. Sanctuary in Nighthollow territory. A standing position — Lead Strategist, named, not implied. Full public credit for any formulation or protocol I produced. A blood oath, binding under Lycan Council law, that no pack — including Nighthollow — could claim ownership of my work without my signature.

"Who drafted this," I said.

"Prince Soren. Personally."

"What happens if I say no."

"Nothing happens," he said. "The offer isn't contingent on your answer being yes."

"And if I want to renegotiate a term."

"Then we renegotiate it. I'm authorized to answer questions on his behalf."

He hadn't looked at a single page while he answered. I noticed that too.

I took the stylus out of the journal's spine — my mother's stylus, worn smooth on one side from her thumb, then mine — and I wrote in the margin of the last clause, in my own hand: *Sole control of the journal. Sovereign ownership of all strategies developed after this date, regardless of where developed.* Then I signed under it.

The Beta read the addition once, nodded, and folded the document back into his coat without a word of pushback. He remounted. "Prince Soren will have this by midday," he said, and then he was gone, hooves fading down the gravel, and I sat there another minute with the wolf finally going still.

I stood. I tucked the journal under my arm the way I always did, and I walked toward Nighthollow not like someone running from a burning house, but like someone arriving for a job she'd already been offered on paper, in writing, with her own conditions attached.

*

The gates were taller than Ironridge's, black iron instead of stone, and the pack was already gathered when I came up the last stretch of road — which told me Soren had planned this, that the timing wasn't an accident.

He stood at the top of the steps and didn't come down to meet me. He waited until I was close enough, then he said my name to four hundred wolves the way Cole never had in five years.

"This is Katherine Griffin. She joins Nighthollow as Lead Strategist."

No qualifier. No *the alchemist who*. Just my name, my title, spoken like a fact that didn't need defending.

I felt the pack's attention land on me and I braced for it out of habit — for the sideways looks, the quiet dismissal I knew from the back rows. It didn't come. A warrior near the front straightened. Another one murmured something to the wolf beside her, and I caught the word *border protocol* before she cut herself off.

A woman broke from the front line before anyone else moved — sharp-eyed, sleeves pushed up like she'd come straight from work. She held out her hand, no ceremony in it at all.

"I've been using a derivative of your eastern-border protocol for two seasons," she said. "I had questions."

Something in my chest, wound tight since 9:47 on a Friday night, loosened half an inch.

"I'm Maren," she said. "Healer. You'll want to fix the ratio in step four. It's close, but it's costing you efficacy in cold weather."

I almost laughed. Nobody had ever criticized my work to my face like they respected it enough to argue with it. "Show me," I said, and she did.

*

The strategy chamber that evening was quiet, high windows, a long table scarred with old ink stains. Soren was already there when I came in, standing, not sitting, and when I set the journal down he looked at it and then at me.

"May I," he said.

Nobody had asked me that in five years. I nodded.

He opened it slowly, stylus already in hand, and read the first page the way I imagine scholars read something they've been hunting for a long time — not skimming for use, just reading. In the margin he wrote a question, not a correction. Then another.

"You're not an alchemist," he said finally, without looking up. "You're a strategist who happens to work in wolfsbane."

I didn't know what to do with being understood that precisely, so I reached across the table and turned the page myself, back to the eastern maps.

"Tell me what you know about the terrain past the Ironridge line," I said. "I want to see if your scouts got the ridge elevation right."

He almost smiled. "They didn't," he said, and pulled his chair in.
