After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became Their Queen Novel Cover

After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became Their Queen

For five years she sat unranked in the back row, third seat from the aisle, watching Cole claim trophies built on her hidden work—her formulas, her border maps, her sleepless nights breathing wolfsbane until metal coated her tongue. Then, four seconds after he lifted the Strongest Alpha of the Northeast, their bond snapped. He rejected her as nothing. But Cole never knew the glass case held his name carved over her genius, and that the woman he cast aside is no longer willing to stay invisible. He has no idea what he just set free.

Chapter 3

Isabelle stood in the supply cache with the door shut behind her, because she did not want anyone to see her face while she looked at the shelves.

The bottles were arranged by height, not alphabet, which already told her nothing. Every label was a string of symbols — half letters, half something else, little slashes and circles that meant nothing in any language she'd been taught. One jar read *WB-4/κ + 2:1*. Another read *EAST — do not rotate before frost*. She picked that one up, turned it in the light, set it back down exactly where it had been.

Cole wanted the rotation schedule by Sunday. He'd said it like it was nothing — *just keep the border stocked, it's inventory, Isabelle* — the way he said most things to her now, quick and certain and already moving on to the next sentence. She had not told him she didn't understand the labels. She had told him she'd handle it.

She picked up a second bottle. Set it down. Straightened her spine the way her mother had taught her to stand when she didn't know the answer in a room full of people who expected her to. Nobody was in the room. She did it anyway.

Cole was three sentences into the eastern briefing when the smell hit him.

Honeysuckle — thick, sweet, wrong, filling the war room like someone had crushed a whole hedge of it under his nose. His Gamma was mid-report, pointing at the map, and Cole's mouth kept moving but the words came out in the wrong order, and then they didn't come out at all.

"Alpha?"

Every wolf at the table was looking at him. He gripped the edge of the stone table until his knuckles went pale and made himself breathe through his mouth, which did nothing, because the scent wasn't in the air. It was inside him.

"Continue," he said, and his voice came out steady enough that his Gamma actually did continue, and Cole sat through the rest of the briefing hearing maybe one word in four.

When the room finally cleared he stayed at the table alone, both hands flat on the stone, waiting for the smell to fade the way it always did. It faded. It always faded. He told himself that meant it was nothing, a stray memory, a trick of an empty room, and he told no one, because there was no one left whose judgment he trusted enough to say it out loud to.

In Nighthollow, the border maps were spread across the whole table, and I'd been staring at the western flank so long the ink had started to blur into shapes that weren't lines anymore.

The work was done. I knew it was done — I'd finished the third revision an hour ago, checked it twice, set the stylus down. And I was still sitting there, no document open in front of me, just staring at nothing, because some old voice in my chest was telling me that if I got up now, if I stopped being useful in this room, something would close behind me on the way out.

I recognized the voice. I hated that I still had to recognize it every time.

The door opened and Soren came in with two cups of tea, not saying anything about the hour, not saying anything about the empty table in front of me. He set one cup down by my hand and took the chair across from me like it was any other hour of the day.

"What's the vulnerability window on the western flank during a new moon," he said.

I knew he already had the answer. I could see it in the notes he'd made in the margin of my own report two days ago. He asked anyway, and something in the asking loosened a knot I hadn't known was still tied.

"Forty minutes," I said. "Between patrol rotations, before the second watch settles into the ridge line."

"Fix it," he said, "tomorrow. Tonight, drink the tea."

I drank the tea. We talked another hour about nothing that needed deciding that night, and when I finally stood to leave, I understood — slowly, the way understanding comes to someone who's been trained not to expect it — that he had not once made his presence in that room depend on what I produced in it.

Maren found me the next afternoon in the medical stores, sleeves pushed up, a vial already in her hand.

"Stabilization window on the frost-grade antidote," she said, no preamble. "What's yours?"

"Six hours, if it's kept below forty degrees." I answered before I'd thought about it, and then I stopped. "Why are you asking?"

"Because I've been running a degraded version for two years," she said, flat, no embarrassment in it at all, "and I'd like to fix it."

I stood there a second too long. Nobody had ever asked me a question like that — not to test me, not to manage me, just because she wanted the thing to work better and thought I might know how.

I stayed two hours longer than I meant to, rewriting three of her protocols on the counter between us while she took notes in her own hand, never once telling me she already knew better.
