Chapter 5

The guard knocked on my door just after dawn.

"Princess," he said. His voice was respectful. Careful. "There's someone here to see you."

I was sitting at the desk in my quarters, reviewing the final evidence structure for the tribunal. I didn't look up.

"Who?"

"Alpha Spencer," the guard said. "He's asking to speak with you."

My pen stopped moving. I set it down slowly.

"Tell him no," I said.

The guard hesitated. "He said it's urgent. He's carrying something. A box."

I looked at the door. The rejection mark on my neck pulsed once—a phantom ache, distant and cold.

"I'll handle it," I said.

I stood and walked to the door. Opened it myself.

Bentley was standing in the corridor ten feet back from the threshold, flanked by two Lycan guards who had positioned themselves between him and my door without being asked. He looked smaller than I remembered. His shoulders were still squared, but the posture read as performance now rather than presence.

He was holding a wooden box. Small. Plain. The kind of thing you'd keep letters in.

I looked at the box. Then I looked at his face and did not look at the box again.

"Blair," he said.

His voice cracked on my name. I heard it. Registered it. Felt nothing.

"You need to leave," I said.

"Please," Bentley said. He took a half-step forward. The guards shifted slightly. He stopped. "Just—give me five minutes. I brought something. Things from—from before. I thought if you saw them, you might—"

"Might what?" I asked.

He opened his mouth. Closed it. Tried again.

"Might remember," he said quietly. "That it wasn't always like this. That we had—something. At the beginning."

I leaned against the doorframe. Crossed my arms.

"Go ahead," I said. "You have five minutes."

Bentley's face shifted—hope, I think, or something adjacent to it. He opened the box.

Inside were objects I recognized. A bracelet he'd given me on our first mating anniversary. A photo from a pack event where we'd stood together and smiled for the camera. A folded piece of paper—a note he'd written me once, years ago, something about meeting him at the training grounds.

He held the box out slightly, like an offering.

"I kept these," he said. "I know I didn't—I know I wasn't—" He stopped. Swallowed. "I'm trying to say I'm sorry. For all of it. For not seeing what I had. For letting my mother—for letting Yara—"

"For rejecting me," I said.

He flinched. "Yes."

"In front of your warriors," I continued. "While I was collapsing from bond severance. After you blocked me from rescuing a man buried in ice. After you cut the emergency relay so no one could call for help."

Bentley's hands tightened on the box. "I thought it was Aldo. I thought—if I let you go to him, you'd—"

"You'd lose control of the situation," I finished. "You'd have to explain why Yara triggered the collapse. Why you were protecting her instead of following pack law."

His jaw worked. He didn't deny it.

"I made a mistake," he said finally. "I know that now. But Blair—the bond. I can still feel it. The scar. It hurts. Every day it hurts, and I know you feel it too, and if we could just—"

"I don't feel it," I said.

He went very still.

"The Moon Goddess heard you," I said. I spoke through the dead bond channel, the gutted frequency that used to connect us, and my voice came out flat and final. "You rejected me. You spoke the words before witnesses. There is nothing left to feel."

Bentley's face drained of color. The box trembled slightly in his hands.

"Blair, please—"

I stepped back into my quarters. Aldo was standing just inside the doorway. I hadn't heard him approach, but he was there—solid, steady, positioned exactly where he needed to be.

I looked at my brother. He looked back. No words necessary.

Aldo moved past me and stepped into the corridor. He didn't speak to Bentley. He simply walked forward, his presence filling the space between Bentley and my door, and Bentley—Alpha Bentley, who had commanded warriors and wielded pack law like a weapon—took three steps backward.

Aldo kept walking. Bentley kept retreating. The guards followed at a distance.

I watched until they turned the corner. Then I closed the door.

The latch clicked. Final.

I pressed my fingertips against the rejection mark on my neck. It was cold. Hollow. But it didn't hurt.

I returned to my desk. Picked up my pen. Went back to work.

---

The intelligence report arrived that afternoon.

I read it standing at the window of my quarters. Aldo stood beside me, reading over my shoulder.

Yara Torres had made contact with the Riverbend Pack and the Shadowpine Pack—two territories that bordered Frostclaw's hunting grounds and had been waiting years for an opening. She'd offered them detailed tactical intelligence: Bentley's battle strategies, the ones he'd built his reputation on, complete with dates and documentation proving he'd plagiarized them from his former Gamma's private files.

The report included transcripts. Yara's voice, recorded through Lycan surveillance channels, describing specific frameworks. The Gamma's original language versus Bentley's published orders. She was thorough. Precise. Desperate.

In exchange, she'd asked for asylum. Protection from the tribunal. A guarantee that her wolf—already deteriorating from frostbite damage and status collapse—would receive healing intervention.

The rival packs had accepted her intelligence. They'd promised nothing.

"She's trying to buy her way out," Aldo said quietly.

I turned the page. The next section detailed Bentley's countermove.

He'd gone to the Lycan Council directly. Presented evidence of Yara's rogue-smuggling connections—side dealings that had funneled illicit resources through Frostclaw's northern borders for at least two years. He'd included transaction records, communications logs, and testimony from a border patrol wolf who'd been bribed to look the other way.

Yara's smuggling operation had been conducted under cover of her Gamma-daughter status. Bentley had known about it. He'd allowed it to continue because it generated revenue and kept Yara dependent on his protection.

Now he was using it to destroy her.

"They're eating each other," I said.

Aldo nodded. "The Council accepted both submissions. Added them to the evidence file. Granted leniency to neither."

I closed the report. Set it on the desk.

"Good," I said.

---

Joanna Spencer was seized at dawn the next morning.

I wasn't there. I was in the compound's evidence room, adding final annotations to the wolfsbane timeline. But Aldo brought me the footage afterward.

I watched it on a tablet. The Lycan enforcers entering the Spencer estate. Joanna in her private study, standing at the fireplace, feeding documents into the flames. She turned when the enforcers entered. Her face was composed. Regal, even.

She did not resist.

They restrained her with silver cuffs—the kind that suppress a wolf's ability to draw on pack power, that weaken the aura until there's almost nothing left. Joanna's posture didn't change. She walked out of the estate flanked by enforcers, her head high, her expression neutral.

The footage cut to the transport vehicle. Then to her arrival at the Council compound.

She was processed in silence. Escorted to a holding chamber. Informed of the charges.

She asked for her legal advocate.

The enforcer's response was recorded.

"Your advocate reviewed the evidence file this morning. He declined representation."

Joanna's face didn't move. But something behind her eyes shifted—small, contained, but I saw it.

She understood.

The tribunal was three days away. She had no advocate. No allies. No strategy left except the composure she'd spent decades perfecting.

I closed the tablet.

Aldo was watching me. "How do you feel?"

I thought about it. Pressed my fingertips against the rejection mark.

"Nothing," I said. "I feel nothing."

He nodded slowly. "That's not a bad thing."

"I know."

I stood. Gathered the evidence files. The wolfsbane timeline. The mind-link fragments. The forged lineage scrolls. Every piece of the case I'd built across seventy-two hours without sleeping more than four hours a night.

"The tribunal's in three days," I said. "I need to prepare my testimony."

Aldo moved to follow me. Then stopped.

"Blair," he said.

I turned.

"You're going to win this," he said quietly. "You know that, right?"

I looked at him. At my brother. The man who'd searched for me for ten years and never stopped.

"I know," I said.

I walked out of the evidence room. The corridor stretched ahead of me—stone walls, cold light, the path to the tribunal chamber where Joanna Spencer would kneel in silver restraints and Bentley would bare his neck and every hierarchy that had tried to bury me would invert under the weight of evidence I had built with my own hands.

Behind me, a door opened.

Footsteps. Fast. Uneven.

I turned.

Yara Torres was standing at the end of the corridor. Her face was gaunt. Frostbitten. Her eyes were too wide.

She was holding something.

Silver glinted in the cold light.

A blade.
