9 / 10.0
The mate bond snapped at 10:14 on a Tuesday, but the true ruin came from the frozen earth. Crossing the Deadlands camp with supplies, she hears a roar that splits the ice—swallowing warriors, tents, and one dark-cloaked stranger. When a hand claws through the debris, she abandons all to dig him out. But saving him ignites a forbidden hunger and pulls her toward a destiny far greater than any rejected mate's—one that could crown her a Lycan princess.

After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Became the Lycan Princess Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, but the ice shelf cracked first.

I was carrying supply crates across the Deadlands camp when the sound hit—a deep, grinding roar that came from beneath the frozen ground. My hands tightened on the rope handles. Around me, warriors froze mid-step, heads snapping toward the eastern perimeter where Yara Torres had been strutting around all morning, ignoring every safety flag Gamma Silas had planted in the ice.

The shelf gave way like a trapdoor.

One second there was solid ground. The next, a massive section of ice collapsed inward, swallowing tents, equipment, and a figure I couldn't quite see—just a flash of dark fabric before tons of frozen debris buried him alive. A hand shot up through the rubble, fingers splayed, then went still.

My crate hit the ground. I was running before I registered the decision.

"Aldo," I whispered. My brother was supposed to be on the perimeter. That was his jacket. That was his—

Bentley's body slammed into mine like a wall.

I bounced off his chest and staggered backward, boots skidding on ice. He didn't touch me—didn't need to. His frame blocked the entire collapse site, arms spread, and when I tried to step around him his hand shot out and caught my shoulder in a grip that sent pain radiating down to my fingertips.

"Stand down," he said.

Not a request. A command.

"There's someone under there," I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "We have to—"

"I said stand down."

The Alpha tone hit me like a pressure wave. My knees buckled. The compulsion rolled through my body in a hot, nauseating rush, forcing my spine to bend, my head to lower. I dug my nails into my palms and locked my legs. Stayed upright.

Bentley's eyes narrowed.

Behind him, Beta Damon was already moving toward the relay station, his face blank. I knew what that meant. I'd seen that look before—the look of a man following orders he didn't want to think about.

"Damon," Bentley called, not looking away from me. "Cut the relay. Now."

Damon hesitated. One second. His gaze flicked to the rubble, to the hand still visible in the ice, then back to Bentley.

Then he turned and walked into the communications tent.

The satellite uplink went dark with a mechanical whine that carried across the camp. No distress signal. No outside contact. Just us and the frozen silence and the man buried under the ice.

I forced myself upright against the Alpha tone's weight. My legs shook. My wolf—silent, absent, the empty space where she should have been—offered nothing.

"Who is buried under that ice?" I asked.

My voice didn't shake. I made sure of it.

Bentley stared at me for a long moment. Yara appeared at his side, her hair still perfect, her expression smooth except for the faint curve at the corner of her mouth. She looked at me the way you'd look at a stain on expensive fabric.

"He's already dead," Bentley said finally. "Drawing Lycan attention to this would endanger the entire expedition. You understand that, don't you, Blair?"

I understood.

I understood that he wasn't going to answer my question. I understood that the relay was severed. I understood that whoever was under that ice—Aldo or someone else—was going to stay there until Bentley decided otherwise.

Warriors began gathering at the edges of the camp, forming a loose circle. I recognized the formation. A formal assembly.

My stomach dropped.

Bentley stepped forward. His voice carried across the ice, clear and deliberate, pitched for every wolf present to hear.

"I, Bentley Spencer, Alpha of Frostclaw, reject you, Blair Davis, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not painful. Not yet. Just cold—a hollow, searing cold that spread down my spine like ice water in my veins. Then the pain hit.

The bond tore. Not gently. Not slowly. It ripped out by the roots, and I felt every nerve ending scream in protest. My knees hit the ice. My vision whited out in waves. I pressed one hand flat against the frozen ground and bit down on my tongue hard enough to taste blood.

I would not make a sound.

Yara's smirk widened.

The warriors looked away.

No one moved toward me.

The pain didn't fade. It changed. Deepened. Became something structural, something that felt like my bones were cracking open from the inside. My ribs expanded. My spine reshaped. My skin split and silver-white fur erupted through the tears.

I tried to scream and a howl came out instead.

The shift was violent. Uncontrolled. My body reformed on the ice—muscles enlarging, teeth producing fangs, my frame doubling in size until I stood on four legs, massive and shaking and radiating an aura I didn't recognize.

Every wolf in camp dropped its head.

Bentley staggered backward, his face draining of color. His wolf whimpered—I heard it through the bond-scar, a thin, confused sound.

I turned toward the relay wreckage and tore through it with claws I'd never had before. The equipment shattered. Sparks flew. And then I tilted my head back and howled—a sound that carried across the Deadlands like a signal flare, aimed at the northern outpost where the Lycan King's enforcers waited.

The sound of helicopter blades answered within minutes.
