Chapter 2

The Lycan stronghold's intake hall had no fire in it. Just grey stone, tall bare windows, and a cold that came up through the soles of my boots. Later I understood the choice. Cold makes wolves want to leave.

The Delta behind the desk didn't look up. "Name and pack."

"Talia Campbell. Ironridge. As of three nights ago, no pack at all."

That made him look up.

"I'm filing a petition." I set both hands flat on the counter, because they wanted to shake and I wasn't giving them permission. "Three charges against Alpha Pierce Walker. Attempted murder of a bonded Luna. Illegal use of silver against a pack member. Fraudulent conversion of bloodline holdings."

The Delta blinked. "Refugees go to the east wing. There's a form for—"

"I'm not a refugee."

I said it quietly. The two wolves waiting behind me took a step back anyway. It took me a second to understand why — the Delta's pen had stopped moving, and he was staring at me like his own paperwork had lied to him.

"Councillor's clerk," I said. "Please."

It took forty minutes. A senior administrator came out eventually, grey at the temples, reading my intake sheet like it had misspelled its own name. "Ironridge records list you as an unshifted omega. No wolf."

"That's what the records say."

"They also say your aura reads—" He stopped.

I opened the collar of my coat and turned my head.

The brand sat where Pierce had pressed it. Pale, raised, still raw at the edges. Silver burns heal slow, and silver always leaves a story. The administrator stepped back before he decided to. His nostrils flared. Silver. Me.

"Two warriors walked me to the border to kill me," I said. "The ground was too frozen to bury me, so they planned a rogue story instead. I fought them off. I have the dates."

"I—"

"Year two, October. The Cedarfall grain contract was restructured twice in nine days. The second filing put four hundred thousand dollars under a line item called 'pack reserve.'" I kept my voice level. "Year three, February. Eleven healer supply invoices routed through an account that doesn't exist. I have the amounts memorized. I ran those books for three years."

He didn't say anything. He just took the petition.

They gave me a guest chamber on the third floor. Council supervision — one wolf outside the door, one under the window. Not protection, exactly. Custody with better furniture.

I slept four hours.

At 6:40 the next morning, they walked me through the main corridor.

That's when I smelled him.

Heated stone. Winter pine. My wolf — the one who had torn free in the snow and hadn't spoken since — lifted her head and pulled toward that scent hard enough to take my legs out from under me.

I kept walking. I counted my steps.

He stood against the wall, slightly left of the corridor's center, watching me with the stillness of a wolf who had already decided not to move. Dark hair. Dark coat. Gold eyes that were the wrong gold — royal, not pack. Prince Caelan Ashford, and I knew that without being told.

I looked at him once. That was all I had to spare.

The scent came off us both like heat off a stove, and half the corridor turned to stare.

*Ours*, my wolf said.

*Quiet*, I told her.

He didn't follow me. That was the strange part. He could have. He could have invented any reason he wanted, and instead he stayed against that wall with his hands at his sides and let me go.

I didn't understand it then. I understood it months later, and by then it had already cost him something.

My door closed behind me. I stood at the window a long time with the scar cold under my collar.

At nine, someone knocked. Not the guard. A tall wolf, wide through the shoulders, black Council band on his sleeve.

"Darian Voss. The Prince's Beta." He held out a flat slate. "The Council monitors pack-link traffic during an open petition. This went out over Ironridge's main link this morning. You should hear it before they decide anything about you."

He pressed play.

Pierce's voice filled the room. Calm. Measured. Alpha tone wrapped around every word like a fist in a glove.

"—the desertion of Talia Campbell, who abandoned her post and fled this pack rather than answer questions about her tainted bloodline. Ironridge will not pursue her. We consider this matter closed."

Then Leilani, soft, doing that trained warmth. "We're all praying for her safe return."

I listened to the whole thing twice. On the second pass I caught it — a small metal click. Once. Twice. Four times. The Alpha sigil ring, tapped against the arm of his chair. His tell. He'd done it in year one, in a council meeting, while telling the pack everything was fine.

Darian watched my face. "The Council will want your response before proceedings open."

I set the slate down carefully, squared to the edge of the table.

"Play it again," I said. "From the beginning."

He did. And I memorized every word of it, because somewhere in that address Pierce had just told three hundred wolves a story he couldn't take back — and I was going to make him eat it in front of the ones who mattered.
