Chapter 3

Pierce's parents arrived at the Lycan stronghold on the second morning. I didn't see them enter, but I heard about it — the way news travels through stone corridors when wolves want you to know something. Former Beta couple. Ironridge loyalists. Here to defend their son.

I stood at my window and watched the snow fall. Counted flakes. Kept my hands still.

They'd brought legal counsel. That meant Pierce understood what he was facing. Good. I wanted him to understand it fully before I took it apart.

My wolf stirred, restless. She didn't like waiting. She'd spent three years silent and suppressed, and now that she was awake she wanted to move, to act, to make Pierce kneel. I understood the impulse. But kneeling came after the verdict, and the verdict came after the evidence.

*Patience*, I told her.

She growled low in my mind but settled.

I turned back to the table where I'd been working since dawn. Three stacks of paper, organized by fiscal year. Every diverted fund. Every falsified invoice. Every account bearing only Pierce's name. I'd rebuilt Ironridge's financial crimes from memory because Pierce had been stupid enough to let me run those books for three years without understanding that I'd memorized them.

Year one: small diversions, testing whether anyone was watching. Year two: larger amounts, routed through shell accounts with names that sounded official but weren't registered anywhere. Year three: aggressive extraction, timed to the months before the rejection.

He'd been planning this. Not for weeks. For years.

I wrote it all down in clear block letters, amounts and dates and account numbers. No emotion. Just math. Math didn't lie, and math didn't care about Alpha tone or pack loyalty or whose parents showed up with lawyers.

A knock at the door. Not the guard.

"It's open."

Darian Voss stepped inside, carrying another slate. He set it on the table without comment, then stood there like he was waiting for something.

I looked at the slate. "What is it?"

"Pierce's opening argument. Filed an hour ago. The Council shares pre-trial briefs with both parties."

I picked it up and read.

Territorial sovereignty. Internal pack matters. No Lycan jurisdiction over mate bonds or pack discipline. Talia Campbell's wolfless status constituted a material misrepresentation of fitness for Luna rank. The rejection was lawful under Ironridge charter.

I read it twice. Set it down carefully.

"He's arguing I lied about having a wolf."

"Yes."

"And that the Council has no right to question him."

Darian nodded once. "His father wrote that part. Former Beta. Knows pack law."

I looked at the financial documents spread across my table. Pierce thought this was about jurisdiction and charter interpretation. He thought if he could frame the rejection as internal pack business, the embezzlement would never come up.

He was wrong.

"When does the tribunal open?"

"Two days. Sunrise."

I nodded. Darian turned to leave, then stopped.

"The Prince filed procedural protections on your case this morning," he said. "Standard security provisions. You'll have full Council access, unrestricted testimony time, and priority evidence review."

I went still. My left hand moved to my collarbone before I could stop it, thumb pressing against the scar through my shirt.

Darian watched me do it. Said nothing.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He left.

I stood at the table a long time, looking at Pierce's brief. Then I pushed it aside and went back to work.

That night, alone in the stone room, I practiced.

The mind-sear wasn't something I'd known I could do until the snow. Until my wolf tore free and I was dying and the memory of Pierce's hand on that brand was so vivid it felt like it was happening again — and then suddenly it was happening again, projected onto the inside of my skull so clearly I could smell the burning skin.

My wolf had done that. Shown me my own memory like I was watching someone else live it.

If I could do it to myself, I could do it to others.

I closed my eyes. Focused. Pulled the memory forward — not all of it, just one moment. Pierce's voice on the dais. The formal rejection vow.

I felt it build behind my eyes, pressure and heat and something sharp. Then I opened my eyes and pushed.

The memory hit the far wall like light through a projector. Pierce's face. His voice. The cold spreading through my chest as the bond broke.

I held it for three seconds. Let it drop.

My hands were shaking. My wolf was pacing, agitated and fierce.

*Again*, she said.

I did it again. And again. Learning the edges of it. Learning what I could control and what I couldn't. The rejection. The brand. The borderlands. The moment Bren said *should've brought a shovel*.

By the time I stopped, it was past midnight and my head ached like I'd been hit. But I could do it. I could make them see.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed both palms against my knees.

Pierce thought this was a documentation war. A legal argument about jurisdiction and charter rights.

He didn't know I was going to make three hundred delegates live what he did to me. Feel the brand. Hear Bren's shovel comment. Experience the exact moment my wolf went silent.

Documentation was for the embezzlement.

The mind-sear was for everything else.

I lay down fully clothed and closed my eyes. Didn't sleep. Just rested.

Two days.

Somewhere below my window, in a chamber I couldn't see, Maren Ashford sat in the Lycan King's private study with a file she'd kept for eighteen years. I didn't know that yet. Didn't know she'd found the match. Didn't know the King had said he'd attend.

I only knew that in two days, I was going to walk into that tribunal hall and make Pierce Walker answer for every single thing he'd done.

And I was going to do it alone.
