Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 p.m. on the night of the Winter Mate Ceremony.

I knew the exact time because I was looking at the clock on the far wall when Pierce turned to face me on the dais. Three hundred wolves packed into Ironridge's great hall. Every eye on us. The moonstone collar — my family's mating inheritance — cold against my throat.

Pierce's voice carried across the silence, formal and final.

"I, Pierce Walker, Alpha of Ironridge, reject you, Talia Campbell, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold first. Then empty. Like someone had opened a door in my chest and walked out, leaving the room hollow behind them.

My wolf — the one I'd spent three years believing was just slow to wake — howled once inside my mind. A sound so raw it tore through every corner of my consciousness. Then she fell silent. Completely. As if she'd never been there at all.

My knees hit the stone floor before I registered the fall. The pain was everywhere and nowhere — not sharp, not dull, just vast. A severance that went deeper than bone.

I heard murmurs ripple through the hall. Saw feet shift. No one moved to help.

Pierce stood over me, his face composed. Not angry. Not even cold. Just... done.

"Your bloodline is tainted," he said, loud enough for every wolf to hear. "A threat to Ironridge's purity. I will not allow it to corrupt this pack."

Lies. Calculated, premeditated lies.

I tried to stand. My legs wouldn't hold.

Pierce gestured once. "Corvin."

His Gamma — a man I'd healed twice in the past year — stepped forward without hesitation. His hands closed around my shoulders and shoved me flat against the stone. My cheek pressed cold against the floor. I could smell the pine cleaner the omegas had used that morning.

"Hold her," Pierce said.

Corvin's weight pinned my upper body. I couldn't move my arms. Couldn't shift — not that my wolf was answering anymore.

Then I smelled it. Hot metal. Silver.

I turned my head just enough to see Pierce pull a brand from the ceremonial brazier. The Ironridge rejection mark — a broken circle. The silver glowed dull red in the firelight.

My heart slammed against my ribs. "Pierce—"

He pressed the brand to my collarbone.

The smell hit first. Burning flesh. My own. Then the pain — white-hot, searing, deeper than skin. Silver poisoning flooded my system in seconds, locking every muscle, choking the air from my lungs.

I didn't scream. I made a sound low in my throat and locked my jaw shut. I would not give him that.

Pierce held the brand for three seconds. I counted them. One. Two. Three.

When he finally pulled it away, the hall was silent except for the hiss of my own skin cooling.

He stepped back, wiped the brand clean with a cloth someone handed him, and turned to address the pack.

"Leilani Webb is my chosen mate. Your new Luna."

Leilani stepped onto the dais from the side entrance. She wore white — my dress, the one I'd helped her pick last month when she said it was for a Cedarfall ceremony. The moonstone collar I'd been wearing was already gone from my neck. I didn't remember him taking it.

She didn't look at me. Not once.

Pierce's voice continued, steady and authoritative. "Talia Campbell is banished to the mountain borderlands, effective immediately. Bren, Hadley — escort her to the border."

Two warriors moved through the crowd. I knew them. I'd run supply routes with Bren. Hadley's daughter had been sick last winter; I'd sat up three nights brewing fever-break tea.

Corvin released me. I pushed myself up on shaking arms, the silver burn screaming across my collarbone. My ceremonial dress — pale blue silk, chosen because Pierce once said it matched my eyes — was smeared with ash and blood.

I stood. It took everything I had, but I stood.

Pierce met my gaze for half a second. Then he turned away, offering his hand to Leilani.

The crowd parted as Bren and Hadley closed in on either side of me. No one spoke. No one moved to stop this.

I'd run Ironridge's finances for three years. Healed their wounded. Knew their children's names.

None of it mattered.

Bren's hand closed around my upper arm — not rough, but firm. "Let's go."

I walked. I didn't fight. Not yet.

As we passed through the hall's double doors into the freezing night air, I heard the music start behind us. The ceremony continuing. Leilani's Luna induction.

They were celebrating.

The cold bit through the thin silk immediately. My breath plumed white. The silver burn throbbed with every heartbeat, spreading its poison through my veins in slow, methodical waves.

Bren and Hadley flanked me as we walked toward the tree line. Neither of them spoke.

I focused on counting steps. On breathing. On not collapsing until I understood exactly what they'd been ordered to do.

Because I knew Pierce. I'd spent three years learning the way his mind worked, the way he planned, the way he never left loose ends.

And I was a loose end.

We reached the forest edge. Bren's grip on my arm shifted — tighter now, guiding me off the main border path into the deeper timber.

Hadley muttered something low. "Should've brought a shovel."

Bren's reply was barely audible. "Ground's too frozen. We make it look like rogues."

There it was.

I stopped walking.

Bren yanked my arm. "Move."

I drove my elbow into his throat.

Three years of healing teaches you anatomy. Teaches you exactly where the trachea sits, how much force it takes to collapse it, how long a man stays down when he can't breathe.

Bren dropped, choking.

I ran.

Behind me, Hadley shouted. I heard him chase — boots crashing through underbrush, his wolf snarling as he shifted mid-stride.

I didn't look back. I ran into the frozen dark, silver poison burning through my veins, my wolf silent as a grave, and the brand on my collarbone marking me as prey.
