Chapter 5

I was restocking wolfsbane vials in the supply corridor when Gareth Fox found me.

I heard his footsteps first — the heavy, entitled tread of a man who had never once been told he wasn't welcome somewhere. I didn't look up. I kept my hands steady on the glass bottles, lining them up in precise rows on the metal shelf.

"Kinsley."

His voice had that edge it always carried when he wanted something. Smooth on the surface. Rot underneath.

I finished placing the last vial. Turned. Gareth stood in the corridor with his arms crossed, blocking the exit like he owned the building. He didn't. This was neutral territory. Lycan-run. He had no authority here.

He hadn't figured that out yet.

"Mr. Fox," I said.

His mouth tightened at the formality. Good.

"The pack needs your wolfsbane compounds," he said. "The usual supply. Same terms as before."

I blinked. "The usual terms."

"Yes. You know the rates."

I knew the rates. Free. Eight years of brewing barriers and healing accelerants in the pack cellar, handed over without compensation because Deacon's parents had convinced me it was my duty as the Alpha's mate. My contribution. My privilege.

I looked at Gareth Fox and felt nothing.

No anger. No bitterness. Just a cold, clear assessment of exactly how much his entitlement was worth.

"My supply contracts are available to any client who can meet my rates," I said. My voice was calm. Professional. "Ironridge Pack's rates begin at triple my standard fee."

Gareth's face went red. "Triple—"

"Given the outstanding debt of eight years of uncompensated labor," I continued, "I consider it generous."

Silence. His jaw worked. I could see him calculating — the same arithmetic he'd always used, the assumption that I would fold if he applied enough pressure.

I pulled a business card from my pocket. Held it out.

"You can submit a formal contract request through the contact information listed," I said. "Payment terms are net-fifteen. Non-negotiable."

He didn't take the card. He just stared at me like I'd grown a second head.

I set the card on the supply cart. Walked past him. He didn't move to stop me.

Behind me, I heard him pick up the card. Heard the sharp intake of breath that meant he'd finally understood.

I didn't look back.

Two hundred miles away, in a banquet hall lit by chandeliers and pack politics, Deacon Fox was learning the same lesson.

I didn't see it happen. I heard about it later — from a traveling healer who'd been at the Silverfang Pack Banquet, from a rogue who sold information to neutral clinics, from the particular quality of silence that spread through the supernatural community when an Alpha's reputation cracked in public.

A rival Alpha had risen during the formal toasts. He'd carried documents. Patrol logs. Barrier deployment records. Warrior testimony. He'd presented them methodically, without theatrics, naming every border skirmish Ironridge had "won" over the past eight years.

And then he'd named me.

Kinsley Carter. Rejected mate. Demoted Omega. The she-wolf whose wolfsbane barriers had held every single one of those borders while Deacon Fox stood in front of cameras and accepted credit.

The rival Alpha had even included the date of my demotion. And the patrol reports from the week after, when Ironridge's border security began to collapse.

Silas Gray, the Silverfang Alpha, had set down his glass. Withdrawn the alliance talks in a single sentence. No apology. No explanation. Just a clean, surgical cut.

Hallie Gray hadn't looked at Deacon as her father led her away.

The banquet had continued. Deacon had sat in his chair, silent, while the rest of the room pretended he wasn't there.

I wished I could have seen his face.

Back at Ironridge, the pack council was waiting.

I heard about that too. Gareth's carefully constructed cover was gone. The elders were asking questions Deacon couldn't answer. The warriors were demanding explanations for borders that kept failing, for barriers that didn't hold, for healing compounds that left scars.

Deacon locked himself in the Alpha office.

He sat at his desk. Opened the drawer where he'd moved the moon-bone charm from the kitchen counter. The small carved piece I'd left behind the day I walked out.

He picked it up. Held it in his palm.

The faint mate-scent it had carried — cedar and rain, the smell that used to make my knees buckle — was almost gone.

He closed his fist around it.

And he made a decision.

I was in room 304 when my phone rang.

It was late. Past midnight. My father was asleep. Zayd had left an hour ago to handle something at the main ward. Barnaby was curled against my ankle, small body warm and steady.

I looked at the screen. Unknown number.

I almost didn't answer. But something — instinct, maybe, or the particular dread that comes when you've spent eight years learning to recognize danger in silence — made me pick up.

"Kinsley."

Deacon's voice. Rough. Strained. Like he'd been shouting.

I said nothing.

"I need to see you," he said.

Still nothing.

"Please." The word sounded like it cost him. "It's important. I'm coming to the ward. Tomorrow. We need to talk."

I looked at my father's sleeping face. At the monitors beeping their steady rhythm. At the cold blank place on my neck where the mark used to be.

"No," I said.

Silence on the other end. Then:

"I'm coming anyway."

The line went dead.

I set the phone down. My hand was shaking. Barnaby lifted his head, ears pricked, sensing something wrong.

Outside the window, the sky was black. Hours yet before dawn.

And somewhere on a highway between Ironridge and neutral territory, Deacon Fox was already driving.
