Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:47 on a Thursday night, but I didn't know it yet.

I was carrying Conner's evening tea through the pack-house corridor when I stopped mid-step. My wolf stirred—barely, weakly, the way she always did after seven years of wolfsbane suppression—but this time it wasn't fatigue. It was recognition.

Cedar. Amber. Rich and cloying and unmistakably feminine.

The scent was layered thick over Conner's pine-needle-and-ash, intimate in a way that made my stomach twist. I set the tray down on the hall table. My hands were already trembling.

The mate bond in my chest tightened like a fist closing around my ribs.

I followed the scent down the back hallway, my bare feet silent on the stone floor. The wolfsbane tincture I'd taken that morning made everything feel distant and muted, but not distant enough. Not for this.

The trail led to a locked private room at the end of the corridor. I pressed myself against the wall outside, my heart hammering so loud I was sure they could hear it.

Then I heard his voice.

Conner's voice. Relaxed. Laughing. Tender in a way he had never been with me.

"Tomorrow's just a formality," he said, and I could hear the smile in his tone. "The ceremony keeps her compliant until the Silverpeak paperwork finalizes. She's useful, Madelyn. She doesn't ask questions, doesn't cause trouble. Perfect little servant."

A woman's laugh. Light and cruel. "And after?"

"After, I mark you privately. The alliance is what matters. She's just a scentless Omega. No one will care."

The tea tray slipped from my numb fingers. The porcelain cup shattered on the stone floor, the sound impossibly loud in the silent hallway.

The laughter inside stopped.

I ran.

I made it back to my small room in the servants' wing before my legs gave out. I sat on the narrow cot, staring at the white ceremonial dress hanging on the door. It was simple, nothing like the elaborate gowns the high-ranking wolves wore, but I had sewn every seam myself. I'd imagined Conner's face when he saw me in it.

My wolf whimpered, too weak to howl.

The mate bond pulsed in my chest, warm and insistent, like it was trying to convince me I'd misheard. Like it was trying to tell me he still loved me.

But I knew better now.

I sat there through the night, watching the moonlight crawl across the floor. I didn't cry. I didn't flee. I didn't storm back to that room and demand answers.

Instead, I made a choice.

At dawn, I walked down to the hidden cellar beneath the pack house, the one only I knew about. The air was thick with the scent of dried herbs and bitter chemicals. Rows of glass vials lined the shelves, each one filled with the pale amber antidote I'd brewed from my own blood. The antidote that had kept Ironvale's wolves alive through three years of rogue plague.

I picked up the last vial and turned the combination lock on the cellar door. Then I pocketed the only slip of paper that held the code.

When I walked into the great hall that evening for the Mate Ceremony, I held my head up. My face was calm. Composed. The white dress fit perfectly.

The entire pack was assembled, hundreds of wolves in formal dress, their eyes tracking me as I walked down the center aisle. I could feel their judgment, their disdain for the scentless Omega who had somehow convinced their Alpha to go through with this ceremony.

Conner stood at the podium, tall and commanding in his black Alpha coat. He didn't look at me.

Madelyn stood behind him, draped in crimson silk, a smirk playing at her lips.

I stopped three paces from the podium. The bond in my chest fluttered, desperate and hopeful even now.

Conner's voice rang out across the hall, formal and cold.

"I, Conner, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack, reject you, Norah, as my mate and Luna of this pack."

The bond mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Then it went hollow.

My wolf screamed inside my mind, a sound so broken and raw it shattered something deep in my chest. My aura cracked across my skin like glass splintering under pressure. I felt it fracture, felt the pieces of myself scattering.

My knees hit the stone floor.

The hall was silent. No gasps. No murmurs. Just silence.

Footsteps approached. Madelyn's heels clicked against the stone. She stopped in front of me, tilted her head, and lifted a full goblet of red wine.

She poured it slowly, deliberately, over my white dress. The wine soaked through the fabric, spreading across my chest like blood.

"Clean yourself up, little stray," she said, her voice sweet and mocking.

I looked up at her. Then at Conner.

He nodded toward the side of the hall. "Garrett. Drag her past the border. She's packless now."

Garrett's heavy boots thudded across the floor. His rough hands seized my arms, twisting them behind my back.

But I didn't fight.

I let him pull me to my feet. Let him shove me toward the doors.

Because deep in the pocket of my ruined dress, my fingers closed around a small slip of paper.

The combination to the cellar.

The only thing standing between Ironvale and extinction.
