After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Pack Begged
Chapter 2
The pain hit before the shift did.
Garrett's hands clamped around my arms, twisting them behind my back hard enough that I felt the joint strain. He yanked me forward, dragging me across the stone floor toward the great doors. My knees scraped against the polished surface. The wine-soaked dress clung to my skin, cold and heavy.
I didn't fight. I'd already decided I wouldn't.
But something else had decided differently.
The bond mark on my neck — hollow and ice-cold since Conner's rejection — suddenly flared with heat. Not the warm, pulling heat of the mate bond. This was different. Hotter. Deeper. Like something buried under years of poison and suppression had finally caught fire.
My wolf stirred.
Not the weak, muted presence I'd felt for seven years. Not the quiet whimper that had broken when the bond shattered.
This was a roar.
It tore through my mind, primal and furious, and I gasped. Garrett tightened his grip, muttering something cruel under his breath, but I couldn't hear him anymore. My heartbeat drowned out everything else, pounding faster and faster until my ribs felt like they would crack.
Then they did.
The shift hit like a lightning strike. My bones snapped and reformed in seconds. My muscles tore apart and knitted back together, larger, stronger, burning with power I'd forgotten I had. My skin rippled as silver-white fur erupted across my body, shimmering like moonlight on snow.
Garrett's hands were ripped away. He flew backward, his body slamming into the stone wall with a sickening crack.
I rose.
My wolf form unfolded — massive, towering, twice the size of any Alpha wolf I'd ever seen. My paws hit the floor with enough force to crack the stone beneath them. My head brushed the arched ceiling of the great hall.
And my scent exploded outward.
Moonflower and frost-iron. Clean and cold and unmistakable. It rolled through the hall like a tidal wave, drowning out the wine, the sweat, the fear. Every wolf in the room froze.
Conner's dark timber wolf, still half-shifted at the podium, let out a low, involuntary whimper. His ears flattened. His body dropped low, instinctively submissive.
Madelyn stumbled backward, her hand flying to her throat.
Warriors who had stood tall moments ago buckled to their knees. Some collapsed entirely, their wolves forcing them into submission before a power they couldn't name.
Inside my mind, my wolf's voice rang clear for the first time in seven years. Deep. Steady. Unbreakable.
*"I am here. I have always been here. And we are done kneeling."*
I turned toward the doors. No one moved to stop me.
My claws scraped against the stone as I walked, each step echoing through the silent hall. I didn't look back at Conner. I didn't need to. I could feel his shock, his confusion, the faint edge of fear creeping into his aura.
I crashed through the border gates and ran.
---
The forest swallowed me whole.
I ran until my legs gave out, until the adrenaline drained away and left only the raw, tearing pain of a shift my body wasn't ready for. I collapsed beside a frozen stream, my wolf form flickering and dissolving back into human skin.
I lay on the icy ground, gasping, my body covered in blood and sweat. My muscles screamed. My bones ached. The bond mark on my neck throbbed with a dull, empty pain.
But my wolf was still there. Awake. Alive.
She curled around my consciousness like armor, steadying me.
*"You're stronger than this,"* she murmured. *"We are stronger than this."*
I pressed my palm against the frozen earth and forced myself to breathe.
Seven years. Seven years of wolfsbane tinctures, of daily poison burning through my veins to suppress my scent, my wolf, my bloodline. Seven years of pretending to be nothing so I could prove that love didn't need power or rank or royal blood.
And for what?
I closed my eyes and reached deep into my mind, past the layers of suppression and pain, to the place I'd sealed off the day I left the Lycan Court.
The royal mind-link.
It fought me at first. The wolfsbane had weakened it, buried it under years of chemical haze. But I forced it open, inch by inch, until I felt the connection snap into place.
And then I felt him.
Hugo.
His presence flooded in like a dam breaking — enormous, ancient, warm in a way that made my chest ache. I felt his shock ripple through the link, sharp and disbelieving. Then came the grief. Raw and overwhelming, a tidal wave of emotion that nearly drowned me.
*"Norah?"*
His voice in my mind was rough, choked.
I swallowed hard. My throat felt tight.
*"I'm ready to come home,"* I whispered.
Silence. Then his aura surged, blazing with a fury so intense it scorched the edges of the link.
*"Where are you?"*
I looked up at the moonlit sky through the bare branches.
*"Ironvale border. East side."*
*"Don't move. I'm coming."*
The link went quiet, but I could still feel him — racing toward me, his royal guard mobilizing, the full weight of the Lycan Crown moving like a storm across the realm.
I leaned back against a tree trunk, my body trembling, my wolf settling into a low, steady hum.
Conner thought he'd cast me out.
He had no idea what he'd just set free.
