After My Alpha Rejected Me for My Best Friend Novel Cover

After My Alpha Rejected Me for My Best Friend

At 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred witnesses, Alpha Parker turned his back on me mid-ceremony and rejected me as his mate and Luna. The mark on my neck went cold, then hollow, as if the bond had been scooped out and replaced with air. My wolf, silent for years, collapsed deeper into the void—not a whimper, just gone. The severing tore through my chest, leaving me rejected and stranded in a pack that no longer wants its Luna.

Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, mid-ceremony, with three hundred witnesses.

I stood on the platform in my Luna gown—white silk, silver threading at the collar—expecting Parker to renew our bond like he had every year since we mated. The ceremonial words were already forming in my mind. But Parker turned away from me. He faced the assembled pack instead.

"I, Parker Jenkins, Alpha of Shadowthorn, reject you, Harlow Sanders, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Like someone had scooped out the space where the bond lived and left nothing but air. My wolf, silent for years, collapsed deeper into the void—not a whimper, just gone. The severing tore through my chest. Silver through flesh. I couldn't breathe.

My knees buckled. I caught myself on the platform railing. Parker didn't look at me. He looked at the pack.

"Her wolf has gone feral," he said. His voice carried that Alpha tone—smooth, absolute. "She poses a danger to pack stability."

Lies. My wolf had been dormant since I was sixteen. Everyone knew that. But no one in the crowd moved. No one spoke. They just stared.

I forced my head up. Scanned the front row. Valentina sat three seats from the platform. My best friend. She wore a soft gray dress I'd helped her pick out last week. Her face was arranged in sorrow—brows drawn, lips pressed together—but her eyes were dry. Bright. She didn't blink.

I smelled it then. On Parker. Under the ceremonial oils and the bonfire smoke. Roses and vanilla. Valentina's scent. Layered. Days old. Weeks old. Ground into his skin like he'd been rolling in it.

My stomach turned over.

Parker gestured to the Omegas stationed at the platform's edge. "Take her to the isolation den. For her own protection."

Two of them grabbed my arms before I could move. I tried to pull away. My legs were still shaking from the bond-break. One of the Omegas—Jessa, I'd approved her promotion last month—wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Let go," I said. My voice came out hoarse.

Jessa's grip tightened. They dragged me off the platform. My feet caught on the steps. I stumbled. The crowd parted. Three hundred wolves. I'd stood beside most of them at their own bonding ceremonies. Witnessed their oaths. Settled their disputes. Not one of them looked at me now.

The ceremonial hall doors slammed behind us. Stone stairs led down beneath the pack house. The Omegas hauled me down step after step. My shoulder hit the wall. I tasted blood.

"Parker," I tried to call through the fraying pack bond. It was still there—thin, unraveling, but alive. "Parker, what are you doing?"

No answer. Just the bond thinning thread by thread. And then, faint through the layers of earth above, I heard his voice again. Addressing the pack.

"Valentina Mills will serve as interim Luna, pending a formal Mate Ceremony."

The bond snapped the rest of the way. The warmth I'd carried for six years—the constant hum of pack connection—redirected. Toward someone else. I felt it leave like heat draining from a wound.

The Omegas shoved me through a metal door. The den was small. Silver walls. A cot bolted to the floor. Shackles hanging from the ceiling. They locked the shackles around my wrists. The silver burned immediately. Skin blistering. I bit down on a scream.

Dara Voss, the pack healer, stepped in. He didn't look at me either. Just threaded a needle into my arm and connected it to a bag hanging from a hook. Wolfsbane. I smelled it before it hit my bloodstream. Bitter. Medicinal. The burning spread from my wrists to my veins.

"Dosage?" one of the Omegas asked.

Dara adjusted the drip. "Continuous. Alpha's orders."

They left. The door locked. I was alone.

I pressed my forehead against the silver wall and focused. The pain was immediate, constant. But pain was information. I could work with information.

I cataloged what I still had. My memory. My scent-reading ability—wolfsbane dulled it but didn't kill it. And everything I knew as Luna. Guard rotations. Pack schedules. The full architecture of Shadowthorn's alliances. Every leverage point I'd spent six years building.

This wasn't grief. This was preparation.

I counted the guard shifts overhead. Twelve-hour rotations. Two guards at a time. Dara came every eight hours to check the drip. The wolfsbane kept my wolf silent, but my mind stayed sharp.

On the third day, I smelled something impossible.

Pine and thunderstorm. Sharp. Layered. Coming through a crack in the silver wall to my left. No wolf should smell that clear in a wolfsbane-saturated den. I pressed my face to the crack.

"Hello?" I whispered.

Silence. Then a voice. Low. Fractured. The words came slow, slurred.

"No… no one… here."

But the scent didn't lie. His mind was intact. I could smell him thinking.

"I can smell you thinking," I said quietly.

The silence that followed wasn't the silence of a broken wolf. It was the silence of someone recalculating everything.

Then, barely audible: "Who are you?"

I exhaled against the cold silver. "Someone who needs an ally."

Another pause. Longer this time. When he spoke again, the slur was gone.

"Then we have something in common."
